Booking.com and Trip.com are under the same umbrella IIRC, one thing I notice with booking is they let nearly anyone onto their platform, often not stating all fees until checkout, and overall just have lower standards.

They seem completely different. Trip.com is owned by China and booking.com is owned by the US. Trip has way better listings in East Asia and SEA while booking has better listing for everywhere else. for trip I always need to book before arrival and the few times I used booking I would pay at the location (which was quite sus at times). I'm just noticing a huge discrepancy with prices for India. Booking.com is so much cheaper.

Always pay at reception in India when you are booking budget hotels, because most of them categorically refuse all bookings made through Agoda/Booking/OYO or other platforms. And you never know if a hotel is going to accept a foreign guest; some cities it's ridiculous, just about every single hotel refuses foreigners. Yes, it's a pain in the ass. That's India. Either embrace the suck, go the luxury route with reputable properties that have hundreds/thousands of genuine reviews, or find some other place to travel. In fact, with the heat and monsoon coming up, I recommend waiting until October to visit India.

Yeah I had this problem when i was in Delhi. India is the absolute worse for this. I always book hotel apartments anyways because I want to bring girls over (which Indian hotels will never allow).

If you use a third-party booking site it goes through the booking site and then is sent to a few things for processing. The hotel gets it in local currency sure, but they still need to pass it through the banks.

Besides india and some SEA countries run by indians are notorious for wanting non cash paymenys done through whatever flavor of the week payment processor they choose. Which one will it be this time Alipay? Viber? Grab Cash? Whatsapp? Apple pay? Google pay? or random app you never heard of?

Yes, you can dicker over room rates before you hand over cash, regardless of whether or not they are posted. Some properties will refuse and tell you to go away. Others will give you a discount.
Lastly, I can't imagine paying for a room in India without looking at it first. No fucking way.

Best bet is just to march past reception with her and hope the receptionist is absent or so engrossed in watching reels that he doesn't even look up at you. Can't rule out a knock on the door later on, however. Be sure to use the deadbolt, they often start unlocking the door immediately after knocking. Nearly all Indian hotels have deadbolts on their room doors.

It's quite another to openly defy and abuse the hotelkeeper when he confronts you, instead of offering to get her ID scanned and registry entry filled out. Most hotelkeepers leave a blank space between entries in their register in case an additional guest has to be registered.

Tons of Indian hotels allow unmarried couples. Often it is listed on the booking site whether or not they are allowed. Muslim-owned hotels are most likely to adamantly refuse an unmarried couple; Hindu hotels vary. One thing's for sure, getting abusive with the hotelkeeper won't get you what you want. India isn't America, where a lowly wagecuck has to smile and apologize and eat shit while being yelled at by an angry customer. In India they'll yell in your face and abuse you right back. Better to calmly insist on doing things your way.
