2 is a kids movie
1 is an adult's movie
Both are good. 2 is better. Make sure you see the version where Arnie doesn't smile.
Before James Cameron became a furry he had the correct opinion of psychology. Exposing it was probably important. So that only the scum depicted in the movies were on it's side.

>2 is a kids movie
It's a family movie. It's purposefully written so that all members of the family can self insert. Kids will self-insert as John Connor the badass kid. Moms will self-insert as Sarah Connor the badass mom. Dads will self-insert as Terminator the badass robot father figure.

>good practical effects
>straightforward story
>ending closes the loop
>preserves the cultural distinction of its time
T1 is the only actual terminator film.
>first film was basically meaningless because judgement day wasn't stopped
>cliche subplot about the young boy with a robot friend
>one liners every scene because gen x faggots just thought that was the coolest thing ever
>dude explosions
>Linda Hamilton is only in the film to reassure the retarded viewer that this is totally a Terminator film and not just a memberberry cash grab
T2 is just a generic 90s action flick riding Schwarzenegger's coattails.

I like the first film more. It has a late 80’s vibe and the terminator is actually trying to kill John Connor’s mom to prevent his existence. When movies get all convoluted (especially action films) it doesn’t feel as cohesive to me. I understand though why people like the second film more since it had better action sequences and a much bigger budget.

I’d imagine nostalgia decides a lot of people’s favorite. Whichever you saw as a kid will surely have a special place in your heart.
But I didn’t see either one until well into adulthood. T1 blew me away, this gritty, desperate struggle for the future of the human race.
T2 is fun, has a lot of good ideas, but it still doesn’t hold a candle to the original.

there's definitely more than 1 audio track going around (one more modern), I know this from having watched the police station shootout an unreasonable amount of times and hearing the different versions

For me is "I don't have to pick one at all"
If I feel like watching a sci fi tech-thriller horror masterpiece, I'll watch 1
If I feel like watching a sci fi action masterpiece, I'll watch 2
Here, it's settled. It was actually settled near 40 years ago, retard. And everyone who disagree with this is just stupid

Some anon streamed the theatrical print cut (I think it was that) maybe a month or so ago and I remember the police station scene was a lot louder with the effects and the moans/cries in the background from the injured officers.

Fan service would be just doing the first movie again
While T2 honours the first movie's formula, structure and aesthetic, but completely upends it in terms of character dynamics and themes
It's a far more narratively ambitious, thought-provoking and poignant movie, in addition to significantly raising the stakes and action. A perfect sequel

I watched T1 as a very young child and it became my favorite thing ever, my parents did not mean for me to see it so I had to go a few years without it again but it stuck with me in my mind so viscerally because I was like 6 years old when I saw it. Now it feels like that movie is part of my DNA, it was literally the first adult piece of media I ever saw and it was fucking Terminator.

The T-800 in the first movie is better, just a physical monster without the need for CGI or practical effects to fake a threatening presence. Would have been cool if T3 had Vin Diesel as the evil Terminator to see 2 bulky terminators battle.

Having just rewatched the latest 4K Super35 scan with Cinema Digital Sound? Terminator 2 is fucking perfect. I've seen it a zillion times but watching it again on a 4K projector with big-sounding audio was as exhilarating as it was back in the theater in '91.
They legit don't make movies like it anymore. Even Cameron can't with his boring, dogshit blue cat movies that he's gonna waste the rest of his life making.

- the T1000 idea was always a bit goofy to me
- the main couple of T1 (kyle+sarah) is more relevant to the story than T800+John. kyle and sarah simply have to fuck to save the world. their relation is also more emotionally powerful
- stop motion is scary
- T1 feels more like a greek tragedy. "no fate but what we make" = hollywood bullshit
- a machine should not start caring for humans just because the viewer wants it really bad

all cameron's movies since aliens, including t2, the abyss, and everything since are simplistic children's book tier appeals to emotion but with cool effects at least. he should have stuck to doing vfx for roger corman.

The contrasts between the two films is just fantastic. T1 is a low budget 80s technoir horror movie but you can tell it was made with passion for the genre and really believed in the universe it was presenting. T2 upped the ante in so many ways and the increase in budget and production value and effects just lends itself to being a natural evolution for a great series. I can't pick between the two; they're both amazing in their own ways.

I saw T2 way before T1 and I was surprised how tense the first movie was when I eventually did see it. Also I had to get used to Arnie being the bad Terminator. Thanks to the tech noir and police station scenes I really struggle to find a favourite. I guess I just like them both. On a rewatch now I'd probably pick the first one.

If you want to talk strictly about pacing, I have to disagree. the part between the hospital rescue and the cyberdyne assault has low energy and a slow pace. Which is not to say it's a bad thing, but T1 is tense basically all the time and the low energy parts (scene under the bridge, the motel night...) are brief and distant from each other

>Anyone who says 1 is just a contrarian.
No, it's perfectly reasonable to prefer 1. Depends what you want.
>It's got great scenes but 2's pacing is perfect
This is close to the opposite of the truth. 2 has the edge when it comes to set-pieces (the storm drain, Sarah's escape attempt, Sarah's WWIII nightmare, the mini-gun, the helicopter chase). But 1 maintains a feeling of claustrophobic tension brilliantly with limited means.
They're both paced pretty much perfectly.

I never really bought the idea that the movie has tension the whole way through. Honestly, the first time I watched it, I did not care at all about Biehn’s character or his story. To me, it is just a bunch of really cool scenes ltied together by some mumbo jumbo scifi plot

its objectively a better more refined take on the entire plot of the terminator universe
jim took 7 years to make sure he perfected it and didn't just jump into a quick doomed sequel like 2 years after the original as is usually the case with such franchises
>T2 is not and never was appreciated for its sc fi component
so what then? being a shitty slapstick comedy? tearjerker melodrama?

there is nothing to settle, if you prefer 2 you are a retarded manchild. its a b-movie with a blockbuster budget. T1 is a blockbuster with a b-movie budget, and is still superior. mostly because most of it is stolen which is ironic, since T2 is essentially just a retread of T1, therefore useless. and T2 existing in the first place and all its sequels destory the perfect loop that is T1. you can just repeat the movie after its done and it loops perfectly back, a neverending story essentially. its so fucking good.
fuck T2. fuck james cameron.
