With a sequel so good, why is it nobody after could come close to the success of T2? Not even James Cameron himself could do it.
Surely more interesting stories could have been told about the Terminators themselves. But we never got anything good.

what T3 should have been:
>john connor (Eddie Furlong) sleeps in trashy house trailer littered with beer cans and liquor bottles
>wakes up
>groans "...oohhh fuuuuck..."
>takes a sip from the almost empty beer can standing next to his bed from last night
>raises from bed
>wears shit and piss stained underwear
>scratches ass
>goes over the window lights up half smoked cig from the ash tray
>looks out window over the trailer park
>motorcycle outside
>motorcycle gutted for drug/alc money
>as he takes a puff he says to himself "shouldn't have stopped Judgment Day"
>John connor goes to his dead grandmas house to collect some stuff that he can sell for drugs
>as he goes through the basement he suddenly faces an aging T800 who wants to kill him
>the T800 was sent there as backup for the terminator T1000 because skynet heard a rumor that John would hide at some point in that house
>however through high humidity and standing around for 30 years made him unable to move
>John connor tries to befriend the stuck terminator
>the movie ends with john selling terminator parts to cyberdine (for drug money)
>as he walks out with his fat check he says Eaaaaaasy money.

Salvation took place in the year 2018, not 2029 from where adult Reese came from. It also was a sequel to T3 in which Judgement Day was postponed from 1997 to 2003.

You could have had other means of Terminators meddling in the past. Them taking the identities of powerful people, and subverting human history. Perhaps some go rogue and are hiding from Skynet, and just want to live a peaceful life.
