Probably cancelled for two reasons. One, Geller trying to micromanage shit and get another bite of an old apple. Two, underage characters being sexualized in the wake of Epstein. The problem with doing Buffy is that the tone and style are very specific to it. Any hack can do a mid reboot Supernatural or Grimm but if you fuck up the feel of Buffy the whole show falls apart. So the question is, did the show feel right?

Being good or bad has nothing to do with it. Disney greenlights plenty of shit tier shows, in fact, most of the shows they greenlight are shit. If we are to believe SMG, and i believe we should since she was the one with the most to win and lose from this, the show they were making was a continuation of the story, something built over the old show while bringing a new slayer for a new generation. Which honestly was the way to go.

Disney probably wanted something different, something that didn´t require people to watch 7 20+ epsiode seasons plus 5 Angel 20 episode seasons, but that still used SMG as the hook. Suits only care for the business side of things after all. Allegedly the project was shelved because suits didn´t see what they wanted to see, which was nostalgia bait.

They seem still committed to making a Buffy show though so now things can only get worse. They are probably thinking of going the full reboot route. Something most fans don´t really care about but with more potential to attract newer audiences. Maybe that´s for the best, at least that way the original show runs no risk of being ruined.
