I just realized that when Don Vito tells Michael he spent his life building power so he wouldn’t be controlled by the big shots who pull the strings(puppet master strings are literally in the GF logo), but that he wanted to be a man of the Italian people who lived in the ghetto, but in doing so, he built an empire that inadvertently put himself in the place of another puppet master.

By the time hes about to die and has to pass on his power, he realizes that Sonny is too hot-headed, Fredo is too weak, and Michael (ironically the one he hoped would escape this life) is the only one capable of taking over, but Michael is colder and more ruthless than Vito ever was.

This is one of those movies where its so overrated that it actually becomes underrated. There is so much depth to the storytelling in this wop films. You could really set them in any culture or time period and the themes would remain universal.

pic related, Brano couldnt bother to remember his lines so he Duvall wore cue-cards on his chest.

I'll give you a bump since it was an interesting read.
I've never seen the Godfather films

Sonny wouldn't have been passed over like Frodo was. Micheal coming into the fore was all circumstantial, he was a civilian.

ok true, if Sonny lived, he stays boss and Michael probably never steps in. His rise was pure circumstance like you said

But Sonny’s temper is literally what got him what got him killed. Even if it wasn’t the toll booth, something else probably would’ve taken him out eventually.

This was not a matter of Brando being lazy like it gets passed around online now. Brando didn't like to memorize his lines because he thought it made the performance come off over-rehearsed and unnatural. In real conversations people don't have memorized speeches. They stumble over each other speaking and bunch up their words. Brando was the first actor to ever present so naturally and it was revolutionary to the craft of acting. Audiences and critics couldn't get enough of it. He changed the entire game.

Checked and acknowledged. I know that he elevated some of the crappy dialogue of the book( which is known to be less good than the movie).

What about how he was eating a sandwich which was out of shot

Absolute horseshit. You can tell how Brando acts and talks that he's a fucking uptight cunt. He didn't want to be bothered by learning his lines and used the lame ass excuse. Just because he executed it well, doesn't mean anything. A good actor has no problems delivering his lines memorized. Instead, he inconveniences the crew.

I don't question his acting ability. But he was a prima donna.

This was essentially Coppola's sentiment made abundantly clear on the Apocalypse Now commentary.

im gonna use this thread as the impromptu GF general thread.

some musings:
Kay was obviously very plastered drunk and the opening wedding.

People always say that the hollywood/horse head sequence brings the movie down, but it establishes the GF's power.

Same can be said the the Italy sequences, Michael is learning how to use his power and influence to get what he wants, thus expressed by telling Apollonian's father hes going to marry her without permission.
