This movie was such shit. Ahistorical mudslime apologism and anti christian propaganda. Frankly pure fanfiction, its astonishing how much character assassination occurs in this movie. Guy's wife never left his side. Balian went with the crusaders. He was born in the holy land and lived a long live there. He never saw France. Saladin enslaved the population of Jerusalem after Balian and the Bishop of Jerusalem spent everything they owned to free as much as possible.

Even the crusaders had some respect for Saladin because he wasn't entirely unreasonable and behaved with decorum. He was not, by modern standards, a good man, and he was at war and did some shady shit. For example. Saladin tries to fleece Richard the Lionhearted in a prisoner exchange, basically trying to trade peasants for valuable soldiers while keeping all the noble hostages as prisoners. Richard massacred many of his prisoners to show Saladin he wasn't fucking around. Saladin responded by killing a bunch of his prisoners too. The crusaders came to respect Saladin because he was actually willing to treat with them on even footing and was even fairly magnanimous. Rather than act like a violent ape, he agreed to a white peace with the crusaders that benefitted both parties. Saladin is fondly remembered by Muslims for being a good King and "defeating" the third crusade (which was in truth, a draw, as both parties gave concessions and did not complete all of their military goals). Saladin's empire, the Ayyubids, almost immediately collapsed into infighting between his family. But he was good while he lasted.

Saladin being a fairly reasonable, but still conquest-driven (not just of crusader lands but of other muslims) king does not magically erase the many bloody jihads. History is complicated.

Saladin was pretty based and a good leader, even if he was the enemy. I would like to think that way, but I also rage at people who beat me at Age of Empires and call them fags in chat, so I don't know how I'd be if I lost real men in battle against some faggot, but I could understand at least the concept of honor.
