I'd say about 90% of Mega Man fans have only played his games through emulators.

Well its simple Columbo, Mega Man was a founding IP from the NES and kept releasing games on a consistent basis for decades afterwards that were played by the core demographic and cultural gatekeepers of the the online gaming community.
While the numbers may not be high in comparison to other more "Gun & Ball" series, its endurance over 4 console generations while being one of the founding franchises of the existing gaming tradition has given the series a earned spot of cultural import and prestige.
Any other questions officer?

The cartoon did a lot of the heavy lifting here ironically enough. Same phenomenon happened to sonic.

If you buy a collection of 10 or so games bundled together, how many game sales does that account for? Because CAPCOM does that to Mega Man a lot.
