It'll be authenticating that your account is allowed to use them. It puts the authority on the user instead of on servers, a server doesn't need to check if you're using paid for cosmetics without buying them because it can trust your client wouldn't display them without authenticating it.
It'll save a lot of bandwidth which makes it cheaper to host.
