Both games suck. Both games have a polarized user base consisting of people that just want to play PvE and people that just want to do PvP. This whole genre is a shitty one that will likely die unless someone comes along and finds a solution to this issue. Better idea, scrap it and remove online capabilities from all consoles going forward. The ability to connect to the internet ruined gaming. Try and dispute it.

Bungie has been raped. All that awaits them now is shutting down Marathon or putting it in maintenance mode. Marasissies thought they were safe because Marathon didn't go down like the hindenburgs that were Concord and Highguard... little did they know they are on the Titanic and its already capsizing. Marasissies will continue to deny reality even while they drown. The game's fate is sealed, accept the end is coming and embrace the DOOM.

Who cares? They haven't added a new enemy race since before COVID anyway. The plot is probably some ai generated shit as usual, a sideshow villain from 3-4 years ago, and killing the same fallen/cabal/whatever that you always are.

No kidding, but really I find these live service games with a main story fascinating because writers will end up running out of ideas eventually, you can see it with WoW, Destiny is just the latest title with that
GW2 also makes me curious in that regard, evil dragons all died a while ago, but apparently its still chugging along
>>
It's a cool game but it's just too intense for the average person, I can't even play several nights in a row there's a mental barrier to loading in that I can only equate to VR. Like I know I'll probably have a good time but I just don't want to put on the headset right now

no, and no one has suggested that. the game needs a lot of work to become viable long term. that said, people have been calling this game dead for months now, and they've been proven wrong. hunt showdown for example spent over two years with under 10k ccu.

Destiny is tired and has run its course, no matter how much Destinyfags want it to return. Even a Destiny 3 will have to be its own new thing and Bungie cares more abot Marathon and whatever the other bigger project is than getting Destiny 3 out any time soon.
Bungie wanted to make PVP content for a whole decade after Halo and Destiny never worked well with that, that's why there's a lot more passion in Marathon than the last 5 years of Destiny 2 content

They'll do what they did with D2 and downsize development to where it makes money. That or it will be put on maintenance mode with very little other than maybe regular wipes and just coast like Anthem until its not worth upkeeing the servers anymore. I don't think Marathon will shutdown unless Bungie gets completely obliterated by Sony. Layoffs and restructuring is likely with a focus shift back on Destiny. I have a feeling that depending on the peformance of the next update for Destiny 2 will determine if they even do a Destiny 3. Though more likely Destiny 2 would just continue getting updates instead since I doubt Sony will be willing to drop hundreds of millions more on Bungie to develop another game that might not break even like Marathon.

Just a reminder for all the 'dead game' folks, the original talking point was that it was 'dead on arrival'
then dead in week 1
then dead in week 2
then dead in week 3
then dead in week 4
then dead in month 2
There's people in this thread now talking about sony investor calls and shit because beleive it or not this was never another concord situation and they are having to rely on speculation about what a hypothetical sony investor might think at this stage.
Not to mention, if player numbers get so dire, it will likely go free to play and linger on for ages.

I don't think anyone expected it to crash as fast as Concord or Highguard, but it's headed towards the chopping block at this rate and seems like a complete failure based on the expectations. Guess it depends what you consider dead, but a AAA live service game just lingering is as good as being dead

I don't know why you shills think pushing this '/v/ said it would flop within 24 hours, but it didn't, so the game didn't flop' angle does anything except draw attention to how badly the game is doing.
/v/ predicted a flop, which occurred, and how long Marathon gets to stay online is Sony's decision since it's their money (being wasted).
>it will go F2P
Lil bro, when it was F2P in the playtest they did, they couldn't even get 150k and half of those people left the next day.
>>737119562
Ironically enough, much of the recent interest and growth in Hunt is because of Marathon coming out and flopping.

>>
>>
>>
>>737121112
The game can't be saved without spending a year (at least) to reboot it into something that both PVE and PVP players can engage with on their terms. (Turning it into Destiny/Arc, in other words.)
But Bungie seems intent on dying on the 3v3 PVP hill, so let them.

The Marathon dev team will at the very least be downsized, from there they'll hard pivot to casual-only content. If it's still not seeing results in a year's time, they'll kill it.
To be clear, there's no evidence that D3 is on the horizon at all. Something they could consider doing to get one out very quickly is converting the next expansion into a new game instead.
>>

>You gonna bot the report button to get this deleted too?
If your shit got deleted its not someone "botting" its a janny sitting in the thread deleting stuff he doesnt like, marathon has had a consistent troon janitor who sits in threads and deletes things he doesn't like.

There's 2 wild cards here, and that's Sony's internal strategy, and the amount of MTX. The key condition is if the losses in total are big enough for normie investors to notice.
I think MTX is ass. I'm not seeing people buy the skins. They had to spruce up the offerings because they were niggardly and cheap looking. It's not showing up on any of the usual rev measurments, but it's also hard to read, so I could be completely wrong.
The fact that they went ahead with Fairgame$ is amazing in and of itself, calling itself an extraction game, and a sign of how shit marathon is doing and their level of desperation on live service shit..
As far as ongoning expenses, they need millions just to keep the servers up. And further dev is infamously expensive bungie rates. They pulled their devs from GDC, but I'm not seeing any kind of development that would change their direction. Their current content level with their maps is an embarassment, and most players will never actually do anything on Cryo anyways.
I don't think they pull the plug until they have some idea of what the fuck they want Bungie to be doing going forward. And no shitposting or posing, I have no fucking clue what they should be doing, or even what the possibilities are. Modern bungie isn't self sufficient, and needs lots of contractors to get anything out the door. Do you give current Bungie a quarter billion dollars for a deep PVE mode? Give up and put a half billion dollars in to D3 or Not Halo? Deploy them to support some other games? Strap them to a 500k hellbomb?
>>
>>737114838
>Putter out like anthem.
This is most likely, but I'd also keep in mind that Sony may be willing to take a loss in the 2 digit or 3 digit range in millions to keep this thing alive longer.
We still don't know what Marathon's ongoing stable player count is. The group that would go through more than one wipe and keep going, other than that it's a lot lower than now. We also know the point at which they start having serious matchmaking problems, and lose flexiblity on even trying new modes because it will split the playerbase, and parts of asia are feeling that now.
We'll see soon enough on their upcoming roadmap. Are they putting enough money and effort in to make a new AA game? I don't think they can or will.
>>737117645
Seriously anon. Bungie's better offf just giving up on this and making a new game.

Fair question. They grow over time because they tend to launch in early access, with low budget and low marketing. The successes here take the early player input and build something worth playing, and gain attention, so their player numbers climb.
That's absolutely not the case with Marathon. they already have spent a AAAA level on development. They have a similarly huge marketing push, where they hired out all the big streamers twice.
Core audiences have seen it, and this is what they've got. The rest rejected it or tried it and rejected it/abandoned it. So for it to gain, where are the people coming from and why? Not streamers and their audience. Not the extraction players.
So what's left? Maybe some crazy hail mary transformation like fortnite adding building and battle royall or going from titanfall 2 to apex, which is almost building a new fucking game.
Where do you see the players joining from? Because I don't think someone's gonna see "ooh, it's dire marsh but NIGHTGIME", and get his friends to pay 120 to buy in.
>>
>>737125767
Sony makes most of their money through platform fees (it's in their financial reports) and MTX. Marathon isn't a MTX monster because of the art style if nothing else, and you already mentioned Bungie having to add more skins and change MTX pricing because nobody was buying anything. There's no way Marathon is making any serious MTX money.
>millions for servers
No, but it's probably a few hundred thousand a month at least since these are the fancier 60 tic rate servers or smth. The salaries are the real killer, since it's still 300 people at Bungie on Marathon.
>what do you do with Bungie
That's the million dollar question and all we can do is speculate until Sony's next big financial call in a few weeks, if they even talk about it at all.
>>
>>737126591
I mean servers at this level tend to go by extended contracts, and I could see sony, even if they had give up, just letting it go until the end of server contract, or until they have a new game to push that needs more servers.
Which leads to the potentiial hilarity of Marathon continuing to survive because Farigames and Horizon hunters crash so hard that they're better off leaving the servers up for marathon.
Although having marathon's servers go to Horizon...which then dies is also a good enough outcome for me as well.

Flopathon's chart analytics projects Marathon going under 1k players by mid-June if the current loss rate maintains. The matchmaking will probably fundamentally break if the game goes beneath 15k peaks because nobody is going to wait 5m+ to get gaped by sweats in 30 seconds.
>Horizon live service slop
I don't even know when it's supposed to come out. All I remember about it, aside from the ugly characters, is that they did a local playtest the same weekend Marathon did its server slam, which seemed insulting (but funny) to me

Asia, which is well below 10k, maybe 8 k? Is already having matchmaking failures in some modes at some times.

its hard. when you have two distinct game modes that require the same guns but different damage output for multiple different targets and gane modes, one mode is gonna take priority over the rest.
>when pvp wins out, you get shit like marathon or tarkov. marathon loses players daily and the other is always gonna be small, but dedicated.
