Trust me, you'll burn through it very fast once you start crafting powders. At endgame your #1 bottleneck is not ancient crystals or even draw tickets, it's gold. It's 406k gold for 18k powders, and you need hundreds of thousands of the stuff.
+6 N-gear is best, above that gives little more powder but costs a whole lot more.

They largely replaced the limited costumes we'd get at every anni. More money and less risk of breaking the meta.
Prestige ones are gacha and come with a mini fated guest interaction, Special skins can be bought at a fixed price but don't have that interaction, it's just a new standing illustration + cutscene + voicelines.

Depends but for new players it's a good idea to prefer crit damage only on body, helmet and VT so you can interchange them with physical and magic characters. Your magic/atk damage should be on your gauntlets and weapon since you can't change them between physical and magic characters.

Use Rigenette (3-star) instead of Zenith for starters, Zenith's multi-hit triggers too many counter instances.
Ventana can one shot with Idol, if she can't use Onsen on T1 and Idol on next. For Diana just use Adventurer (or AD on T1 and Adventurer on next), Innovator is for raids.

From the FAQ in the OP:

If you used the 1-pick on stuff like goth Liberta (+4) or Bride Refi (+5) that's okay, for the rest it depends on what you want. Who have you pulled for?

Ditch Helena for one, she is too squishy and is just dead weight on defense. There's also 0 synergy with Rubia there.
If you want Rubia put in the back and have her open with Pirate Queen, that's her sole use on defense. You don't have the time or luxury to setup dodges on defense unless they are pre-emptive like Olivier's, and what remains of the dodge meta is on the way out with Mamonir anyway.
Defense is all about building and positioning to wall/counter what you die to the most in your bracket. For example, if your #1 problem is Eleaneer wiping your Gran build it with 90DEF+the rest into HP% to survive her.
Most people run 1 tank that can also dub as buffer (BATeresse/RRH Rou, some people also use Granadair), 2-3 Tanks/DPS (Glacia, Mamonir, Lecliss) + 1-2 damage dealers. Schera for dispells and damage, a super built Justia (fixed damage dealer) to counter taunt Seir on Offense, or Rubia for the Pirate sweep. Others go for a hyperbuffed Blade (RRH Rou+DKLathel) who can swipe grids if she can bait a multi-hit.

thanks for the answer anon. i'm basically following the beginner's rentry recs and tier list. i've only pulled for starlight guardian tyr so far, along the way i got spooked by glacia alice and elise code name o. besides that, i have sylvia bikini agent, b-rank helena +5, and the other free newcomer units like new hire nebris, bride eclipse etc.
since my luck has been terrible so far i already reached hard pity on the 1-pick banner and can select an unit, i know liberta is strong but the rentry mentions she's very dupe reliant, and since i also wanted to get some other characters just because i like them (such as granadair) i'm not sure i want to pull for multiple copies of liberta right away...
i'm open to suggestions. i'm aware that starting out so late i won't be able to catch up with most players, and i like the cast so i kinda want to get as many characters as possible, i just don't want to end up weak and then not be able to clear content that gives rolls and such

you might not be able to get collab costumes if they don't get another rerun but they're not important.
this is an extremely generous game in terms of pulls.
buy the mega pack $4.29. it saves around a year of grinding for elemental stone. this is the bottleneck for new players not getting dupes for characters.

you can borrow OP units from friends so don't worry too much about getting powerful DPS characters and pull for who you like.

generally i would wait to roll for limiteds, but the current ones from the SR collab seem to be weak, and the only other banner is sylvia which is not limited either and worse than tyr (though i did get one copy of sylvia because she's hot)

You can get 1 copy of Liberta for free from the tavern after finishing SP15.
Don't think that you NEED to ever have characters at +4 or +5 for them to be usable, because that's absolutely no true. Newer characters only ever need +1 for the SP reduction. Anything after that, while obviously good and will make them better, is never going to be REQUIRED for anything. At least not outside of caring about top %10 scores.

1pick is to force +5 on core units like Liberta (except that you +4 her since 1 copy is from story)/Bride Refi/Miko Granadair and maybe something like Sacred Justia who can hardcarry pretty much all PvE for you. Once you have that just slot the rest into 12pick and gradually raise them over time.

Blade is too situational both with Apostle and Onsen, and Eclipse has too low base stats, no synergy between costumes (former pvp unit), and a too high cooldown on Beach. For example: I'm using Beach Eclipse, and her skill hits in a 3x3 square. The enemy side is filled with enemies in almost all squares. No matter how I position Eclipse in the board, her skill only ever targets the back portion of the enemies' side, and sometimes doesn't even cover the full 3x3 squares her skill is supposed to cover.
Is it possible to manually make her target the front part of the enemies' side? The same applies to other characters too, like Dalvi. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Every single character has a knockback move. Some characters have a multi target knockback. And some characters have a focused target ability that makes your attacks target that enemy as the primary. So you usually end up with 2 buffers, 1 focused target/knockback char, and then two DPS with large AoE.
Using bustia build as an example:

There's a guide book that explains a lot of things, but it's also a fucking slog to read, so don't feel bad that you missed it. Follow the wiki up until you get Diana and "finish" the guide, and start putting together a melee team. Right now is a really good time for powder of cope usage in the shop, rather than with the event girls. Zenith, Justia, and Helena are all S tier or better, and you already get a free BHelena from the newbie pass tickets.
Speaking of which, use the select draw tickets to +4 helena and +4 diana, only +5 helena here if you don't plan to powder of cope her within the next week or however long she has left in the shop. I would still grab zenith, GC rafina, glut refi, and the last one is gunna be a mix between H Lathel and Loen. If you don't have a copy of Dark Saintess Liberta from luck/the pub yet, grab Lathel. Otherwise grab Loen, but she's more for late game, and you'll be putting her & others on your regular 12 select draw and 1 select draws anyways.
Use the chart from >>563611660 to help you with the costume picks/ If you need suggestions, go for the SS buffers, skip Helena and Diana as you'll already +5'd them. From SS, the problem here is that those are a lot of heavy invest costumes save for morpeah, so she & tyr are good. From S support, RH zenith, H Lathel, RRH Rou, Onsen Libby, Glutti Gran and glutti refi, GC Rafina, & Track Levi. I'd use the last slot on Sacred Justia from S tier since magic hits a wall, but you can swap her out for a FG you really like or another girl you just vibe with. Before setting up your 12 pick, go to any story pack and click the 'check recruitment status' button near your map. A lot of girls will show up randomly or will be a guaranteed spawn after clearing specific packs. So if you see a girl who can be picked up from the pub on your 12 pick and aren't in a rush for that specific costume, feel free to swap them out with ones who don't show in the pubs (which are like all the FGs...)

Until ~Ruby you can do whatever on attack, after that you need something to deal with Granhildr taunt/ This means either one-shot with Liberta+Eleaneer, dispel with PPSchera, or you turtle up with double Seir/Lecliss taunt (+5 and -sp nodes) or Anti-Dystopia Diana to make their Gran waste 5sp, then you wipe them on T3 with B-Helena powered Schera/Eclipse.
SP is tight so cheap units like White Cat Rou, Sword Queen Sylvia, Zenith are good and SP hogs like Refi, Bustia or multi-setup units like Nebris are very bad.
For defense just look to what you die to most in your tier and build to counter accordingly. It's about walling enemies; building you DEF team like your ATK team is the #1 mistake.
1 buffer with a high HP pool, 2-3 tanks, 2-3 good DPS like Schera/Justia/Rubia. Always build 90% of the stat you want to counter on a unit (double DEF or double MRES gears); buffers and tanks can often build both 90% DEF and 90% MRES due to their exclusive gear having defensive stats.

I don't do pvp much, but I can help you to a point.
1 - Lathel or Helena are ideal because they offer attack boosts, low sp costs and can provide defensive support
2- Chainers in pvp are usually shit, don't use them
3- You'll need a good tank, one with taunt for your defensive team. Granhildr and Lecliss are great (Morpeah can work with her summons)
4- Fixed DPS characters like Justia and Alec are solid in pvp. Justia moreso, because she's got a fair few costumes (you've missed her limited which is meta in pvp, since it's an attack boost and guaranteed dodges)
5- Someone with dispell, Schera and Eleaneer are meta in pvp because they can deal with pesky taunting tanks
6- Aim for 50% crit rate and have the other 50% made up with a buffer
7- pvp is a whales game, do what you can but don't expect to win every fight
Rou, Lathel, Helena, Schera, Justia, Alec, Granhildr, Rubia, Eleaneer, Morpeah, Lecliss and Zenith are good options.

I don't know shit about strategy, but if you are still collecting characters, yes just do your 40 and start collecting medals, you can buy characters from the PVP shop every month. I think the comfortable rank is Ruby that gives you 10 medals when you lose.

There's only two ways with MW: Farm tokens or rank.
Farming tokens means you just put whatever team is popular (Check the teams tab) and hit the multiplier to just be done immediately.
Ranking however means you are going to invest actual time and probably whaling to craft gear for PvP. Also researching the current top teams and sadly investing most of your time setting up a defense team. Rewards are pretty good.

But in a lot of cases Combat power doesn't really matter, it doesn't count buffs/debuffs crit and other effects of the team.
