Popgoes has always been the weird middle child of fangames where it's one of the most famous, but that's because the creator was a Reddit moderator who had friends in high places. I do like the FNAF 3-esque approach where most of the animatronics exist as support for one singular threat.
Plus most of the characters just kinda look like Fritz's furry OCs rather than actual mascots for a pizzeria and the animatronics themselves are nowhere near as interesting as those in other fangames like Graveyard Shift, Candy's, or A Bite at Freddy's.

The designs are lackluster and never felt that unique. Also its really hard to make a fangame that only has 1 (one) singular game that has released and all of its sequels are on perpetual gamedev hell.

Feels like at least 95% of horror fangame animatronics are made less as horror characters and more like Sonic OCs with lines. That goes for a lot of official FNAF designs too (Glamrocks, for one) but with fangames I guess it feels more apparent since they're typically made from scratch.

There's many types of fangames.
>2D fangames that go for a more comedic/gameplay-centric approach, rather than trying to be scary (Frickbear's, Playtime with Percy, Flumpty's, Friedrich's, Too Many Nights, New Fangled Nights)
>Fangames that are trying to be overtly scary with animatronics that are spooky as fuck (Graveyard Shift, Crawlspace, Jr's, FNAF 1 Remake)
>Games that try to remake/reimagine the first game and mostly just use the old cast (Animatronic Memories, Welcome to Freddy's, Blood and Gears, Next Week at Freddy's)
>Fredbear free roam slop
>Games with licensed characters and such in place of FNAF characters (Krusty Krab, Fun Times at Homer's, Treasure Island, Wario's)
>Fangames that mostly use OCs and maybe exist in the same universe but otherwise have their own casts (Together Again, Popgoes, Candy's, Mary's Arcade, Bondee's Barnyard)

Despite Popgoes having a mostly original cast it also kinda fails to stand out on it's own because of how much it relies on FNAF 2 and such. Most of the hype I've seen for Evergreen comes from the False animatronics and not much else, because people are more interested in them than the actual characters.

It's because Steel Wool generally does more with what they're given than a fangame from 2016.
It does the same shift to AI that Popgoes does, but goes about it in a more interesting way.
The Mimic and Glamrock Freddy both have identity issues but go about it in different ways, meanwhile you have the Glamrocks all having issues and Edwin replacing his dead wife with a robot Stepford Wives style. all of that does more than the giant evil purple skeleton who needs essays to tell you what his motivations are.

The Glamrocks are kind of okay because they're supposed to be a literal rockstar crew, the Pizzaplex is supposed to have this vaporwave aesthetic to it (and if Steel Wool could properly cook it'd feel properly hollow on the inside, like something empty pretending to be full of life).

Glamrocks were designed by Pinkypills, them having thicker leg proportions really just seems like a coincidence. Like how the Fury's Rage Vanny isn't actually based off of Zero's design in Megaman Zero.
