4chan's Bizarre MMOdventure is an ongoing project from a group of anons dedicated to playing through dead MMOs.
>How does it work?
Hold a tournament-style voting contest from a list of games
Play the game that wins the final round of votes for 2 weeks
After each game, we alternate lists of MMOs to vote on
A guild photoshoot will take place every Saturday, check thread for pic times
New adventure starts every other Saturday, after the week 2 guild pic
Feel free to recommend more games to be added to the lists and to encourage people to vote on a game you want to play.

Worth noting is that DDO week 3 was partially due to the end landing exactly on christmas. A lot of anons weren't going to be hopping onto a new MMO right away so the first few days would've been weak anyway.
Wakfu funnily enough is also lining up with Easter.

I've been asking for LoTRO since last year. I don't think anyone is interested.
And now isn't probably a good time. Their anniversary event is in a month and they'll probably do another free quest pack voucher. That'll be a good time to join.
I'm still only level 60 so I don't know the differences between the private server and the official server. Maybe less P2W stuff?

I've only tried the game briefly years ago but it felt like pure questslop similar to wow or rift where you're encouraged to blitz through as many quests as possible. Compared to DDO where you're essentially doing one quest at a time with actual narrative exposition, which I prefer.
I hope I'm wrong because there's a lot about that game that I think is cool, and the community seems chill.

That's only if you're a min-max retard. I go through each quest chain individually and read them thoroughly. If you love LoTR and want to immerse yourself in the world then LoTRO is the best game out there. If the goal is to reach end game in 1-2 weeks then the game isn't for you. Unfortunately that means the game is meant to be a long term play, not played in short bursts.
My problem with DDO is that the overall atmosphere of the game sucks ass. Except Ravenloft. I value immersiveness of the game a lot. If I can't get immersed then I can't really get into a game. Every dungeon basically plays out the same. Except with a twist depending on the expansion. Feywilds, same dungeons but with gnomes and fairies. Isle of dread, same dungeons but with dinosaurs. The only time the game has ever hooked me was when I did Mist of Ravenloft. The spooky atmosphere, and the spooky dungeons really sells that the expansion was spooky themed. Even some dungeon narrator uses those little girl voices that sounds scary. Playing the game makes me feel like I'm actually playing a scary game.

Installing anything will always come with a risk, even if it's an official software or whatever. Best way to protect yourself is not be an idiot.
If you are really paranoid, get a new PC specifically for gaming. Do not use it for personal or work stuff. Bonus if you buy a second internet provider just for gaming, then use a reputable VPN.
If you don't want to do that then the best way to protect yourself when you only use on PC is to have a separate account with just the bare minimum permissions. Unfortunately people don't do this and just use their admin account for everything. The next step would be either using a virtual machine to play games (which is slower but more secure) or a sandbox (faster but has a risk of leaking data). It's up to you which one you go for.
After that it's basic opsec shit. Like not using the same username and password for multiple websites. Don't use your work/personal email when signing up for shit, just make a dedicated email for gaming/spam. I recommend using a password manager to keep track of all your logins and passwords and emails. Just don't be a fucktard and accidentally leak your master password or something. I personally use KeePassXC because more password managers require you to be online to access their servers to edit your passwords. If you can self host a password manager thingy then do it. Make sure your master password is NOT saved in your PC. Just write it down somewhere.
If you want to buy anything then use a prepaid credit card. Best is a gift card or something. This way no company has your credit card info. Some banks have their own prepaid CC, I wouldn't trust a third party offering a prepaid CC unless they're really reputable. Just make sure that the prepaid CC doesn't automatically withdraw from your own savings account because that defeats the whole purpose of getting one. It's just so when that card is stolen no one can use it if it has $0 in it.

Ack. I'll have to think about it. I don't have enough of a life to have stuff to steal but there's always that risk some server badmin or something goes rogue I guess. It happens on a cycle in the pserver community. I use mail aliases and never make the same password but it's still a worry. Noscrubs looks okay for the next game, it doesn't even give a false positive like mapstosteal or something like usual.
>>
>>2320503
Recently there was a company that had their servers hacked. Perpetrator injected malware and made every update their games. It's not just private servers that has a risk of getting your shit stolen, it's also legit companies too.
>>
>>2320503
It is almost trivial to steal data right now. You can convince robots designed to be interesting to talk to to do it for you if you pretend they're your grandma.
The only real defense you have against a rogue server admin, private or public, is if your data was expendable in the first place. Even if you suck at having multiple passwords on recall, it's very easy to remember what your Blade And Soul Classic password is if it's "fuckbladeandsoulNigga123." If your heart bleeds enough to give a private host money for something, it's no skin off your bones if they try to overdraw a Visa gift card.
A rogue private server host would probably stop there if they're trying to keep that server running. They can only put in a keylogger once before people wise up, but they can skim the username/email/password combo you gave them with a lot more plausible deniability.
Obviously, though, change your realspace passwords often and try not to do your banking on every device you've ever owned.
More importantly, if this thread was trying to slowly lead people towards a trapped server, I think they'd have done it by now.

NTA, but worth mentioning Guilds in Iris can have their own teeny tiny icon associated with them, so we'd ideally want a name which could play into that.
https://noscrubs.net/discussions/guide-guild-mark
Also, we don't know how long/short Guild names can be, so try to keep it within ~12-16 characters for insurance.

>every class sucks and deal barely any damage
>most of them comes with annoying gimmicks
>the only class that can heal good is Eniripsa, but then you still get a mid character in everything else that only good for regeneration and Coney summon
>Meanwhile Chadram's shadow outrape and outheal literally everything, thanks to all the AP and selfheal from the Hemorrhage and Weak Point using skills, and essentially don't even need anyone else to shine.
This balance is maybe somewhat amusing, if you actually can bother yourself to going through the humiliation ritual that is multiboxing, but if you don't - it's an absolute ass.

Massive skill issue and totally wrong about everything, except Sram being good but it's not the only good class, there's only a few classes that really aren't good at doing damage and there are multiple viable healers.

>Server restart
May as well post what 'caps I've taken thus far...!
While it can be skipped, going through the opening Tutorial still offers its own unique mount to speed through the big top with, albeit one which vanishes upon entering the real world. Bit odd the game starts your off in some random circus, but we've certainly seen stranger opening acts in other titles.

Met-up with a local Hybrid who was just as green as me(seemingly the /only/ one of you bunch who'd arrived by that point), and we took to waltzing around town for a bit. The usual back-and-forth ferrying for starting quests, you know.
Love the tone this starting village sets all the same. These aurora-soaked purples and blues are precisely my kind of aesthetic.

Those opening quests aren't just for show either. Some of them offer additional Skill Points to add to your arsenal, always appreciated to come across.
That said, seeing as this server is currently running some pretty wild +EXP% bonuses due to its Easter event, don't be surprised if you outpace what quest are on-offer quite regularly when starting out.

The freebie mount you get at Level 5 is certainly, uh...
It's certainly something, alright.
One highly important thing to note: Your inventory is very, VERY small at the start (only 25 slots), but fortunately that's something which is shored-up as soon as you reach Level 10.
Speak with the Prince in town at that level for a short quest leading to a free 35-slot bag. Upon reaching Level 11, you also receive another 35-slot bag via your Gift Box.
It's rough-going at first inventory-wise, but things do become considerably more manageable before long.

With the server restart looming, both of us sprinted back to town for a quick photo by the fountain before it was lights-out.
Hopefully the downtime is quick (perhaps things are back up already). Feels like there's a game here to be had, albeit closer in spirit to something like Lucent Heart than anything.
In the brief time we had, we noticed that parties gain additional +EXP for slaying things together, so it'll behoove us to group-up when we can. Dungeon-running requires it later on regardless.
Making a Guild is also super cheap. Only requires the leader be Level 10 and have 10,000 Gold on them, which you'll be able to achieve in less than an hour. Should be able to spin one up soon, once things are live again.

Oh nice, looks like the server was only taken down for just a moment.
The Hybrids encircle their tall-legged prey... Although I can't envision this being much of a feast; there's hardly any meat on these bones.
A few of us are hanging around the starting sector. Toss a line when you're around - Guild should be live by the end of the night...!

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a 15-year-old server of an incredible obscure KMMO, one of the rare locals was quite excited about our sudden surge of greenhorns gathering in town, tossing some max-level buffs on all of us.
A gesture which would normally be appreciated by any other veteran of this title, but I'd advise right-clicking them off your status bar for now. Being superbuffed straight away before you've ever set foot out of town will give some pretty skewed perspectives on how combat in this title tends to be.
We'll be begging to be doted-on like this again in due time, surely, but perhaps not on our very first day here.

Calling all able-bodied Anon, the Guild is live...!
Toss an application to

when you're able via the Guild menu (minus the implication arrow, obviously).
Unfortunately, symbols weren't accepted, and thusly "Hiiii ^_^" and "Hello :D" as dictated by the Guild's naming poll could not be accepted. Next time, perhaps.

Now THIS is more of a proper steed! Far moreso than that wonky wooden horse, at least.
Leveling is super smooth throughout the early goings, in part due to convenient timing. Looks like there's a pretty sizable +EXP% bonus in effect for Easter Sunday, prime opportunity to make progress where we can.
>>2330243
Frustratingly, it appears Guilds under 100 Rating cannot be listed on the Guild Search.
How do you get Guild Rating? Having people click the "Attendance" button in their Guild panel. Despite having about ~11 of us present thus far, that'll obviously still take a while to qualify...
Failing that, toss anyone you see with the <Aerith> tag a line in-game. Everyone who's currently in the Guild has invite permissions, so you'll come across a way in eventually.

Making quick progress!
Some of us are already up to the Level 20 Dungeon. Will likely take a break once we've finished a pass of it (or at least I will anyway).
For those concerned about placing their Skill Points poorly, don't worry too much. You get a free skill reset with each Class Advancement (first one is at Level 30), and subsequent ones can be bought with Scrub's Tears in Terminus.
>What the fuck are Scrub's Tears?
Things you get from voting for the server when signed-in to the NoScrubs 'site:
https://noscrubs.net/iris/vote
(You won't be able to see this page unless you're logged in, obviously).
Mildly amusing fact about the voting pages: Iris is a 15-year-old game, and NoScrubs is 13-years old. There are no more servers left to choose from when it comes to Iris Online, and yet the backend requiring its players to upboat the server for Scrub's Tears still remains.
Very silly, but at least it offers a healthy amount of that currency for about ~3 minutes worth of effort.

First Dungeon down!
Made short work of the place, honestly, in large part due to the box of freebie Unique gear you get at Level 20. It's unsurprising for KMMOs of this vintage to hurry you through old content to get to the "good stuff", but it does take away from the thrill of dungeon-delving a bit early on.
Still, there's plenty more Dungeons left to tackle along the level climb; ones which will certainly pose more of a challenge than this romp through the circus.

Also there's a cat.
Can you believe nobody wanted to roll on this thing? I think it looks cute, in its own sort of way.
Not especially speedy, granted, sporting only a +30% Movement Speed rate - quite lackluster for a mount. Still, it could make for a respectable fallback once my 7-day stallion runs its course.

It is that generic anime game but I feel like this is better than most of them. Early on it's a bit face-rollish and we totally outscaled the first dungeon with the level 20 box gear but assuming the difficulty curve catches up this could be decent bit of fun. There's a second dungeon at 25 so we'll see how that is.

I'm not sure anything is missing. Looking at the classes in guild right now there's only 2 rogues, 3 rangers and 3 mages. We've got plenty of fighters, warriors and shamans but unclear how many are going for tank or healer roles. Shamans and mages can both become healers or dps. Warriors and fighters can tank or go dps. Also unclear how necessary an actual tank is or if all warrior and fighter types can do the role decent enough.

Look at what skills your later classes have, at the job trainer NPCs. Some skills get upgraded later on, others don't. Some only get upgraded once. I don't put points into anything that won't get upgraded to third job.
>>
>>
>>2332284
Apparently you get a respec when you change jobs. Also 30 scrub tears to buy a respec item. You only need 40 points spent in the first job to put points in the second or that's what it said when I looked at the skill tree planner on the trainer.
As a shaman I went full into the fire spells while also picking up useful passives, a couple utility spells and two buffs.

I figured I'd ask hear instead of creating a new thread.
Are there any MMOs around that have you actively hunt for diablo style equipment with random stats and everything?
I know ESO and PSO are like that.
I remember plenty of games that started out with loot like that but eventually gave up on the idea in favor of preset endgame items.
>>

I've suggested it earlier, but Ultima Ruins&Riches or Memento fit that bill. There's a server here that's fallen behind on updates a bit, or I'd say the one for Memento being run by the fork's active dev is best.

Have you tried PSO2 or Tree of Savior? Those match your description and they're both reasonably populated compared to the stuff we play here.
If you're willing to consider private servers, phantasy star universe, anarchy online, and city of heroes are all fun and loot-focused, although they're best enjoyed with a group.

The gameplay is spamming the same couple puzzles over and over. There's no feel of progression and IIRC the monetization was awful so we probably wouldn't even be able to get a ship of our own in a reasonable time frame if it's even possible to do without paying.

Not that guy, but I've been playing for a while now. Been taking it super slow. I'm still level 38 Beorning, and a level 22 Captain. So far no class has really made me stick with it. Beorning is crazy strong and while Captains sounds fun for me, the rotation is so ass. I like spamming my skills and the Captain skills all have long cooldowns so the beginning levels you're kinda just auto attacking while using whatever skill is up. Beorning has a level 1 skill that is on a 0.3s cooldown which I like using whenever all my skills are on cooldown but staring at a bear kinda sucks. I'm not a fan of ranged classes either so I haven't tried them.
>>2336867
Grond is the EU server, right? I'm on Glamdring, and I kinda regret it. I would rather have went to Sting or Peregrin(RP).
Also there's a high chance they're not going to give away a free code this year. They'll most likely save it for next year's 20th Anniversary event rather than a weird year, like 19th Anniversary. They don't give away codes every year and do it randomly. They started giving them out on 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2025 only.
So yeah, it might suck for new players without the code but there's still a ton of content on a F2P account.
>>
>>

>Grond is the EU server, right?
Yeah. There's only 3 eu servers. One is RP, the other is so populated that it frequently has queues to get in and lag, so Grond seemed like a good pick.
I know almost nothing about this game but I always wanted to try it, no idea which class I'm going to go. If the other anon ever comes back I'll make a thread so we don't derail this one too much.

Do wonder if opinions of RF Online (and PvP-focused MMOs in general) would have been at least slightly better had we stayed where we first landed. Learned some highly valuable lessons about committing to decisions and general server selection very early on in the project, at least.

Might be a little off topic but i think its better to ask here than to make an entire thread over it since you guys played so many of these.
I tried all kinds of MMOs. From low effort SEA F2P grindfests to Vanilla WoW and yet, only a couple have managed to hook me (Tera and Toontown) but i want more.
These are my nitpicks:
>No needlessly complicated progression
>Side content that matters/contributes to progression
>Solo friendly
>Not a wiki game or at least have all the knowledgebase inside of the game itself
>No wipes if we're talking private server
>No P2W (duh)
>Either F2P or B2P. Sub is not out of the question but it has to be some amazing shit to keep paying
Thats my general needs but more will come to me as i discuss this but either way, im open to suggestions that fit these criteria.

With Tera, i actually joined one of the best guilds aroundfrom /terag/which i still interact with to this day. It was really fun playing with them when the game was alive and the time i started playing was right as a patch that really simplified gearing has hit the game so it all felt pretty nice to me. As for Toontown well, it checks most of my boxes, side content matters and its fun to do, you can kinda sorta solo things, progression is as straightforward as it gets with no bullshit that makes you run in circles. The nostalgia is just extra.
One MMO i considered picking up was Guild Wars 1 but it kind has me on the fence with how it seemingly leans more towards being a social SP game than an actual MMO and it doesnt seem to have anything going for it besides PVE challenge modes and PVP.

GW has three separate individual story campaigns with one expansion. If you complete the story content then you can do all of the missions on Hard Mode, in addition to "vanquishing" (killing all mobs in a zone) for your "PvE challenge modes". It's more a game about build variety because you can only have a max of 8 skills at any time, and even eventually putting together a party to conquer all the content. It's even getting official support again as of a few months ago.

>Not a wiki game or at least have all the knowledgebase inside of the game itself
This rule out pretty much every mmorpg
>Side content that matters/contributes to progression
FFXI is one of the few games I know that isn't just a hallway to the endgame. Every few levels you unlock new things to do. The problem is that it's not a solo friendly game unless you play on retail, which is buy and pay to play. It's also a wiki heavy game.
There's also the good old RO, but there's not a single decent server left.

I think Marvel Heroes has private servers if you're into capeshit

The first game that comes to mind is Guild Wars 2. It has a lot of horizontal progression and side content rabbit holes to go down, and the base game is f2p with no p2w shit in the cash shop.
Before I toss out more suggestions I have a few follow-up questions:
How much do you value the story/questing experience?
What kinds of side content do you enjoy?
Do you have any preferred settings or art styles? (high/low fantasy, sci-fi, anime, etc)
>>
>>2337107
In a lot of cases the server choice has played a part. Even with Iris the timing I think was pretty bad with the xp bonuses. It made the early game feel bad and spread out the levels of people who played early.

It works both ways. I feel insecure when i outlevel my guildmates. It feels bad to have a good rapport with someone and your level starts shooting past theirs.
You're describing the fundamental flaw with MMOs as a whole. It's impossible to socialize when your friends can play for 10 hours more than you and you never see them again. It's probably why most games have settled into the leveling->endgame model, because people will be stuck at endgame for weeks or months and that gives people with lives a chance to catch up and socialize with their friends. Of course, that model is also massively flawed because it removes all incentive to make a game that's actually fun while you're leveling - all the focus is on the endgame.
The only answer to this is an actually well designed sandbox where everyone can contribute meaningfully at all levels of experience. Or things like Toontown or MS2 having a large emphasis on minigames you can play with friends even if they've outleveled you.

Agree to only gain exp with each other, and the other person can either play an alt or craft in the downtime. I've been doing this for years. You can also agree on a level cap, which lets you group with other people but still stay at the same progression before moving on.

>The only answer to this is an actually well designed sandbox where everyone can contribute meaningfully at all levels of experience
the most mmolike game that i've played recently is foxhole and it's not even labeled as an mmo but it totally fits that description. i just miss mmo where i can do things meaningfully with other people where the people around me don't feel like npcs
>>
>>
Uncharted Waters did it well because of its asymmetric gameplay. You could go out for an appropriate archeology/whatever mission that gives progress to everyone regardless of level and during trading runs, a higher level player can play the bodyguard while the lower levels transport the goods.

Sorry for the late reply.
>Guild Wars 2
I did sorta, kinda tried it myself ages ago but it felt so aimless and rough in terms of new player experience i was really put off by it.
>How much do you value the story/questing experience?
It depends. I mean its hard to invest into an MMO's story because you gonna have to keep moving forward to finally reach the most populated content around, and even if you take your sweet time you're stuck entirely solo most of the time which can be a bit of a pain. As for quests specifically well, anything that goes beyond "collect 50 bear asses" is good enough in my book.
>What kinds of side content do you enjoy?
I do like jobs, housing, pets that arent just a buff totem, vanity items/gear, side events in both PVE (like special dungeons/bosses, unique enemies to hunt down, betting on monster arenas or other things etc) and PVP (arena 1v1s, territory wars/castle sieges, minigames between players etc) The most common stuff like crafting and fishing are simply fine for me but i do wish for them to not fall into either completely useless or absolutely vital to progress.
>Do you have any preferred settings or art styles? (high/low fantasy, sci-fi, anime, etc)
Im easy going on that also. Most MMOs i got to play were hugely different from each other in that aspect so i guess anything (?) goes.

>Defiance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3-0dUPkaIs
Sci-fi third-person shooter MMO that was recently brought back from the dead. The relaunch is using the 2013 version of the game instead of Defiance 2050, and the old DLCs were released as free updates. Group size 4, drop-in co-op in the open world areas
>Fallen Earth Classic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQG-UGuqVHo

>Priston Tale
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la8aKoOk-7M

It definitely has content, the question is just if people will get past the initial hurdle of getting your first badge and if there will be enough players with open ships at the start. Sailing with the navy sucks.

I went back and looked and it's true.
Previous polls were 13 votes, then the puzzle pirates polls went up to 15 votes and puzzle pirates lost by 2 votes. The current vote is up to 18 now while the last non puzzle pirates was 14 again. Not to mention the puzzle pirates false flagging, it's a little suspicious, but maybe we just picked up a lot of people from Wakfu.
