The Horizon era+ HNM system is to blame for the over recruitment, you needed a bunch of people to cover a bunch of spots over a bunch of zones. To answer about glamours: FFXI has a thing called "Style Lock" where the only thing you need is the item itself and the ability to wear it- for example say you have platemail armor at LV40 and it requires the WAR/DRK/PLD class. As long as you have a class among WAR/DRK/PLD at LV40, you can "equip" it into your style lock set (like a macro/equipment set) and your model will appear as if you're wearing it. It's ahead of WoW somewhat in that you can wear class-specific equipment this way.

Like if you really like the RDM hat and want to wear it while you are playing another class, as long as you can wear it on RDM, you can put it in your style lock.

i played through to end game on horizon with no add-ons. it's a lot more fun that way. but in end game you have to use a few addons though because the entire game is swapping your gear out for optimal stats on every action. you might have a few baby ragers but just play with cool people and explain you are trying to experience the game as intended and you won't have issues.

if you play retail none of that matters because you will be playing completely alone and everyone else will be scripting 18 accounts simultaneously
