There was those giant Tentacruel that appeared on the opening. I don't remember if their appeared in any episode and if it explained why they were so large.

Ash's Noctowl was also way smaller than most Noctowls too.

I think it just had a growth spurt during the time it was training in Charizific Valley

The Tentacruel is from an actual episode but it only grew big because of Team Rocket dumping something on it. The Dragonite that appears in Bill's lighthouse episode was just naturally big.
