Was saving my little thought experiment about characters having Legendaries for this thread, so here goes:

Obviously if written well, having trainers owning Legendaries can be great for the story. I think it especially works when an antagonist has a Legendary (think Celot from IMO). Action Shonens are great at building up how insurmountable an antagonist is, which makes for great tension when the protagonist has to go up against the antagonist (not to mention the underdog vibes your hero inevitably gets when facing a Legendary)

With that being said, there’s one character
It becomes a slippery slope when you give them a Legendary: your protagonist. What I would tell writers when they consider putting a Legendary on their protagonist’s team is if the MC is battling any trainer that doesn’t have Legendary Pokemon, the Legendary is going to remove a lot of tension or uncertainty about the protagonist winning the battle. Minor Legendaries aren’t as big a deal (think Articuno, Lati@s) while Major Legendaries (Groudon, Mewtwo, Solgaleo) are a whole other level.

So if the protagonist gets a Legendary and has battles left to go in the story, the opponents need Legendaries too if you want any semblance of dramatic tension. Your story is then on a timer because of power creep.

Least favorite? Well it depends by what you mean, but I'd have to say Vicky from PTV, but she's an SIOC and my dislike from her mostly from my dislike for PTV, oh and the SIOC from Un Un Un as well. So not counting an SIOC I'd have to say Nui from PoPT. After Pofag said she's just an idiot she became by least favorite character because of how much of a bitch she is, not dunking on Pofag here btw but I feel like if we saw more of Nui she'd become more hated.
I guess Selene gets an honorary spot for being a bum, but I don't actually dislike her, she's just a fraud and has made a lot of mistakes on her mostly negative character arc and doesn't look to be pulling out of the nose dive anytime soon. I think Neroli might be more hated but she's a semi-competent subordinate and I can't hate her for trying to think of the greater good.
Oh yeah, LB was such an OC in PoPT, but in a funny way, not an annoying way so he's an honorary mention as well.

What were kino elements in bad (pokemon) fanfics you've read? Like if something kept you going? There's this isekaijin one where, not only does the mc talk to to pokemon directly, but he constantly shows up other characters, like it is annoying. The author knowingly made the world dumb (tsk, I thought these people should've known that in this world.) But like, you made that world? You made it dumb on purpose to make the mc look better (especially morally. Like it takes place in Kalos and the mc hs to deal with an OC bureaucracy, the league being complicit with fascist characters like Wulfric. Oh yeah there's this whole (badly done) growing narrative against the 'culture' that allows certain injustices to happen and blah blah blah.)
The ONLY reason I stuck around for longer was because a few scenes where the mc deals with pokemon with trauma were unironically well done (granted they were done so against the fag backdrop of their world; basically, the mc has to deal with the pokemon of criminals. Normally in hte setting, they would just be put down, no questions raised or asked. He changes this completely by pointing out that certain labels didn't fit the pokemon (like dangerous), makes Nures Joys cry because of what they have let happen if unknowingly. So then he deals with like twenty houndours and a few houndooms and it was, faggotry aside, pretty neat.) Then I just lost interest.

I wouldn't really mind since I'm more likely to keep a Pokemon as a pet and not be a trainer. But if I had to convince them to evolve I suppose >>59181374 is a good idea as any.
From a writing perspective, I don't think a pokemon has to evolve but if it's a specific problem they have to overcome due to some trauma or complex I'd probably have the pokemon and trainer initially at odds with one another over the issue, but then the pokemon's issues are put in perspective and the two come to understand each other, and then the plot is resolved with the pokemon evolving.
