Emboar is an outlier, it’s mega was intentionally sabotaged to punish Masuda. The general rule is megas are for shillmons, regional forms are for Pokémon game freak doesn’t care about. Thats that Charizard got megas but no regionals

We had a schizo for years that really specifically hated Typhlosion, Samurott and Decidueye for whatever reason - would constantly force starterwars with them and write essays on how they "flopped" and "gamefreak wanted them to fail" and what not. You can guess what happened after PLA chose those exact 3 mons to get regional variants.

You can’t use pokemon of the same species in comp and regional forms are generally better than their original counterparts in every single ways so there’s never a reason to use the original over the replacement.

Ive never seen a Ninetales or a Decidueye fan be upset that Ninetales but blue and Decidueye but orange are on paper more playable in comp (in reality all 4 kinda suck ass lol).
Cross-gen evos are the actual replacements both in lore and in gameplay. If you prefer the preevo you have to pray it’s good with Eviolite or else you’re throwing.

I've had a lot of my favourites get regionals, megas, crossgens and even a Paradox and in pretty much every case I like the regionals far more. Was actually really hoping for a regional Chesnaught since that'd round out my 3 favourite starters with regionals so I was pretty disappointed it got a mega even though it's by far one of the better designs. Really don't like the cross-gen evo stuff though, yea - it's just kinda the worst of all worlds.
Worst case is Linoone getting outright retconned as the "original", but at least it's still got its gameplay niche secured for funny gimmick teams.

the weather mons are the real examples of how you buff a mon to make it more relevant
abilities make or break mons, so many of the new megas are dogshit because of their lackluster abilities but the funny toilet bird and turtle became meta just because gamefreak gave them the gift of nature

It comes from the fact that most regionals get better typing and even a new evolution compared to their originals, making them obsolete. Just look at Unovan Basculin, for example. It's locked out of getting a cool and powerful evolution that it so desperately needed because they made a regional variant that exclusively evolves into it.

how absolute is a rule if there is a whole load of outliers

>gen 5 gets a bunch of regional forms
>"ha ha look regionals are replacements gen 5 sucks no megas loool"
>gen 5 gets a bunch of megas
>well actually these are just jokes and megas are still for shillmons but only the ones that aren't gen 5 and the regionals are still all replacements except the ones from kanto because they're not unova
It always comes back to Unova derangement syndrome

Because they aren't buffs to the original mon. Ninetales is still shit, Basculin, Goodra etc. are still shit. Combined with Gamefreak deciding they would rather just draw over old mons than make new ones, and you have a lazy concept that shits on both people who liked older mons and people who want to see actual new ideas.
