I don't know how you could torture yourself with the japanese version, the english dub is actually one of the best dubs ever made in anime. Whoever was in charge of it put a really insane, unappreciated amount of effort.

It's hard to explain, but shudo's insanity filtered through 4Kid's schizophrenia is sort of a beautiful harmony. It actually creates the impression that the world is so much larger and stranger, but you just don't care.

Check nyaa.si and see what versions they have available. I remember finding a good batch a few years ago that had Kanto subtitled up to Episode 45 or so.
