According to Gameye, these are the most expensive carts I own. Panorama Cotton doesn't count, I have the Colombus Circle version but it wasn't in the database.

Damn, was hoping to see some cool collections in this thread. No timestamped photos except for OP.

Guess /vr/ is either broke now or they all just emulate.

Most expensive? Probably Zelda's Adventure or my two player Daytona USA machine.

Actually rarest? I have a copy of that one Lil Howie educational pc game that is supposedly lost media.

Mate, you're just a random anonymous person in the world, do you really think we care so much about some random cocky little shit owning a piece of plastic he isn't even playing because he WATA'd it?
The game isn't even good or fun, and no one really cares about it today.

If you really think you're so big and better than us for owning a piece of crap you seriously need to get help.

Have an original copy of Shantae, loose. Would have thought the LRG repros would have brought the asking prices down, but apparently not. Not that I give much of a shit. I honestly wish games were more affordable for those who wanted to actually play them. It's a grim market.
>>
>>12499874
Those who actually want to play games use emulators. No one in their right mind will scour ebay auctions or whatever for a working copy of a 30 year old cart just to play a game.
>>
>>12500063
Oh, I agree, it doesn't make financial sense anymore. I'm just lamenting that it wasn't always that way. Quite a few hobbies have priced newcomers and those on a budget in recent years. I don't take any joy in seeing prices go up, even for stuff I own. That "got mine" attitude isn't healthy for any hobby, and ultimately kills them when no new blood takes them up. I myself make use of both OG hardware and emulation, and see emulator development as the key to people being able to enjoy these games in the future.
>>
These are my top most expensive games. A few are missing from the top slots since I haven't added them yet or pricecharting does not have a good estimate for them:
Dicing Knight CIB
Dicing Knight. CIB
Keio Sega CD
Aero Fighters CIB w/ poster

I'd like to buy Magical Chase some day. That might be my big purchase next year.
>>
>>12499220
A review copy of Kuon I got from a dirty ass lot, it's pretty scratched up but it works. I'm probably gonna look into selling it in the near future though. I also got a couple of undumped preview builds from the same lot though I don't know if there's any interest in that.
>>
>>12500160
Oh I forgot a few others
Hammerin Harry GB
Hammerin Harry NES
Cotton Neo Geo Pocket
Cowboy Kid
Ginga Fukei Densetsu

I already have almost all of the expensive stuff I want by now purchased.

Paid 5 euros for a copy at my local game store over a decade ago. Prices peaked at 400 euros a few years back, now they're down to 150 euros. Though that's "market pricing" as finding an actual buyer willing to pay that much is essentially impossible.
This was completely worthless for a long time due to a Google issue of all things. Googling "Buccaneer PS2" would only give you results for "Pirates: Legend of the Black Buccaneer" which is an entirely different game. So this one went way under the radar for years until that got fixed and suddenly the price went through the roof.
There's a few other games that notably suffered from similar issues with Google such as Deadly Skies for PS1 and the Irritating Stick game for N64, but their prices have yet to go up as much.
>>
>>12500482
Some of these highly rare games have prices that are basically impossible to actually act upon, yeah. Oftentimes their "value" is calculated on a single sale which may or may not be fraudulent to begin with. There's some rare PS2 stuff like Haunting Ground or Rule of Rose or whatever that's very easy to sell for their theoretical value, but there's stuff that's just as if not more rare but that are very hard to get rid of.
>>
>>12500534
For a lot of the higher end games, the value may indeed be there, it's just not guaranteed that the relatively small group of people able and willing to pay full market price will be there right when you want to sell. I think bricken mordor stores lose sight of this, so they'll set out some meme game on their shelf for $2,000, overlooking the likelihood that there are zero people within driving range of their store who want to pay that much.
I know I have some turbo rarities in the four figure range that I could try to sell at a local meet up for $50, and have zero nibbles because nobody there would even know what it is.
A good example is that recent Punch Out prototype. Put that out on the shelf at a game store in Helena, Montana for $50, and I can guarantee you that nobody visiting the store would buy it, or probably think it is anything other than somebody replacing a label on a normal PO cart.
>>
>>12500450
It might just be the photo, but those labels look a bit sketchy. Especially that Chrono Trigger. Yours may be a different revision to mine, but my legit copy doesn't say ESRB on the rating. You may want to crack those open to see if they are bootlegs or not.
>>
>>12500550
Nah man. Nah. There are more people willing to buy in person than on eBay. I saw a rough-ish CIB of Flintstones Dino Peak sell at around $4000 US a few months ago
>>
>>12499220
>5.0
lol
>>
>>12500534
One example of this i can think of is Beach Soccer on Xbox. I think it was a legit low print run and its prices are autistic as hell. Sometimes on ebay you can snatch it for 30, other times there will be only one listing for over 100. I assume its value also comes from just being a weird one that xbox set collectors have to get.

Also Jackie Chan Stuntmaster on ps1 goes for absurd prices now, but i would not doubt thats due to youtubers probably and being "le hidden germ".
>>
>>12500550
That's why a lot of stores are always looking out for more common but valuable stuff rather than obscene rarities to stock up on. I think most stores would rather get a good deal on a bunch of Pokemon stuff than a fantastic deal on something super rare and obscure because the Pokemon stuff still goes for a fair bit of money and flies out the shelf as soon as you stock it. Rarer games may indeed be worth full market price but sometimes you have to be willing to sit on it for over a year before you find a buyer.

>useless plastic
my plastic isn't useless. Just recently modded my N64 with a HDMI mod to play it on a big screen. So I refuse to get the games rated and sealed away. Feels like an affront to the games. They are meant to be played.
>inb4 PAL mocking
yeah, fuck you too.
>inb4 no time stamp

Also don't ask me why I got "snake rattle n roll" 2 times. I don't know either.

FYI game boy stuff is in the basement. Nothing special about it though. Maybe Pokemon red edition is ok, but that's about it.

I care more about people thinking they're better than others for owning a piece of plastic than the actual piece of plastic.

I've got my own share of rare plastic with sentimental value for me but I only care about that: the value it has for me and not the validation of others.

To be fair, one has to wonder if the people with sealed copies like these have even played the games they collect. Did they have other versions for playing so they kept these sealed? Or do they emulate them on the side? Or is their hobby collecting rarities itself and they have limited interest in playing the game?

i have the official Game Boy Pocket clear plastic case. pic isn't mine, but it's that one.

now that actual junk people used to throw away is valuable (we paid to DISPOSE of old CRT TVs), is this worth anything? can i swing it as a rare 90s vintage item?
>>
Based images. I didn’t know people were still grabbing this junk anymore.
Does anybody here have any tips for getting expensive useless plastic without selling your liver? I would really like to get my hands on something like the sega cd, but nowadays that seems beyond possible
>>
>>12503603
sega cd is hard to find among hard to find things (video games) all I do is look for cool shit and have only seen one many years ago. the games a bit easier but still very rare.
you either have to devote all your time to looking or pay up, that is just the reality of things now.
>>
>>12503603
Outside of blind luck, it ain't happening, chief.
>>
>>12503584
It's rare, it's culturally relevant, it's kinda cool looking, and you would have to pay me to take that trash to the garbage disposal
>>
>>12503603
Stop looking for a good deal on something you want and start keeping an eye out for good deals in general. I'm not gonna tell you to become a full time scalper or anything, but if you come across something that you're confident you can sell for $100 being sold for $50 then just flip it and put those extra $50 towards something you actually want. It's hard enough to find those kinds of deals these days so you can't be picky when you do find them.

Second tip is to look out for undervalued lots. This is probably your #1 source of great deals, it's not super rare to find a lot of, say, 10 games where one or two of them pay for like 90% of the lot while also having another 1-3 games there that you do want. So you buy the lot, sell the 1-2 valuable games if you don't want them, keep the ones you do want and then just dump the rest at your local game store or whatever.

Those two are, to my knowledge, the only methods for building a collection these days without spending an absurd amount of money. And honestly, if you don't find this process itself fun then it's better to just pay up or give up, because it is very time consuming.
>>
>>12503603
Buy an untested one and repair it yourself, I got my mega-CD for 200 working but they probably go for more than that now, I see model 1's reguarly go for under that but they're usually broken or untested and need repairs.

we joke, but it's happened to the weirdest shit.

N64 games came in boxes. they weren't hard plastic cases or jewel cases, just flimsy cardboard. most of us threw them away because they were packaging. little did we know they were actually part of our 'collector's items'.
>>
>>12500450
>>12500563
The Earthbound cart is clearly a fake. The top left says 'Licensed by Nintendo' but a real cart will just say Nintendo.

Hope you didn't pay too much for these lol
>>
>>12500563
>>12504148
This shit is why I don't like collecting cartridge based games, especially popular Nintendo stuff. The amount of fakes being sold is absolutely astounding and a lot of them won't even say they're repros in the product description. In those two cases you can tell that they're fakes from the labels, but with some of them you have to open them up to check.
>>
>>12500450
those are fake labels, lol
>>
I have a copy of every single retail (i.e. no bonus disks or ntsc box) pokemon game up to and including gen 6, it's probably one of them, I'm not going to check which of those 50 games is currently the most expensive though.
>>
>>12504340
Don't call them repros. That makes them sound somewhat legit. They are bootlegs and should be addressed accordingly.
>>
>>12505015
Fair enough. I usually have no issues with stuff like reproduction jewel cases to have something to store loose discs in (as long as they're clearly advertised as such) but whole fake carts just doesn't sit right with me. Even when sellers are upfront about it it just pollutes my search results.
>>
>>12504148
if its so easy to tell by eye why dont these repro fake faggots do a lil bit of research.
>>
I think the most ridiculous piece of plastic I own is the official PSTV vertical stand. It's literally just a hunk of weighted plastic but you can easily get over $100 for it because it's really hard to find and vita autists are unhinged.
>>
Such a waste of money
>>
Posting more dumb shit I own. These are pretty worthless, though, even though they are still sealed.
>>
>>12499627
And do you play them? Or too busy working at the clinic diddling children.
>>
>>12502118
Like 95% people won't play a retro game, there's no appeal. Why play some C grade sidescroller from the 90's when Silksong and Nine Sols exist? And that's assuming you even care about sidescrollers which a lot of people don't.

You can ask around in any Facebook retro group, most people only collect.
>>
>>12505541
I don't know anyone who collects retro games that doesn't also play retro games. Plenty of people collect games they've already emulated though, simply to own a copy of a game they liked even though they'll probably never play it on original hardware. There are some collectors who collect both retro and modern stuff and those tend to gravitate towards mostly just playing modern stuff, those are probably the closest I can think of that fit what you describe. But as far as some faggot who only collects retro games but has barely ever played any I can't say that I've ever met anyone like that fortunately.
>>
>>12505476
Who says I can't do both? Also, why do you feel the need to be an asshole just because I own some plastic? Are you that jealous?
>>
>>12505593
obviously
>>
>>12505541
>Why play some C grade sidescroller from the 90's when Silksong and Nine Sols exist
Because modern indie games usually look garish or homosexual.
>>
>>12505094
No idea that existed but i kinda want one. The PSTV is neat, but its so small that its rather akward havinh all the thick wires coming out the back of it and usually keep it hovering uneven off a surface due to its lite weight. Im personally trying to get the charging dock for a PSPGo and they are impossible to get, despite being the only means to do video out put and AC at the same time since Sony decided to go the gay all in one port direction like its Apple shit.

One of these in here. Chrono Trigger or Tron Bonne are tied, Chrono is worth more but the box and manual on my copy aren't in great shape so it probably evens out. Paid $100 for it though in like 2019 so can't complain
>>
>>12500450
>labels are centered too well, yes even factory labels weren't always perfect
>labels and carts do not have even slightest amount of wear like minor scratches, sunfade etc, which is bound to be common on most 30 year old video games by now
>label coloring looks too dark, too saturated
>starman's legs are cropped out of your label, on real carts they aren't
>curved corners on label are too round, real labels have much smaller radius
>ESRB logo on Earthbound is not the right size

100% fake, hope you didnt pay out the ass for those. They are convincing fakes at first because they actually took time to use real screws instead of those shitty plastic ones. source: video game seller
>>
>>12500550
Its pretty damn rare a store will straight up end selling a $2000 game for sticker price. Majority of the time they're just gonna end up trading that for like 50 pokemon/mario games that a collector brought in. Sell 50 Pokemon/mario games for ~$40-$100 each = ~$2500+ in sales. Those lower priced games will sell 10x faster than 1 super expensive game (most of the time)

When i vend at conventions its super rare that any buyer will straight up drop $500-$1000+ cash on 1 game. Maybe once-twice a year maximum. They will almost always just want to trade games, maybe worst case they trade a bunch of games in and pay like $50-$100 cash on top to close the deal. As others have said there are whales out their who will drop $1000+ on 1 item but its very few and far between.
