I've heard pretty good things about this game but never played a Resident Evil game in my life, what am I in for?

It's a damn fun action adventure game, extremely well made.
It's a bit of a stylistic and thematic departure from prior titles (but not as much as some of the canceled attempts at making RE4), and the gameplay is yet more action focused than RE3, which itself was already upping the ante on action over prior titles.
What you can expect is:
>evil parasite cult
>mutant monsters of many kinds
>violence and gore
>weird death traps to break out of
>lots of different guns to use, lots of different treasure to gather to fund your guns
>(but also rationing the ammo you can get your hands on)
>adventuring through a forsaken village, a weird and massive castle, and a giant, rusted out industrial compound
>varying degrees of wild action with varying degrees of a nice horror glaze
>occasionally completely ridiculous shit
>fighting your way through all this as a capable badass hero
>quick melee moves on stunned enemies
>(like suplexing an infected cultist so hard into the floor that his skull fucking explodes)
>quite a lot of unlockable stuff
>optional new game plus after beating the game
Resident Evil was never TOO grounded of a series of games (which is how I like them), and RE4 is even less grounded, and even more wild. However, not all the time, things get spaced out with the sometimes more quiet and tense moments.
You do have to escort a character through much of the game, but she is generally not difficult to deal with (and there's only really one room which gets hard, but which you can cheese a bit to make a little easier), and you'll appreciate her absence for the part that she's gone.

effectively the best videogame ever made if you wanted a single game to entertain you. i have been playing it on various consoles without ever tiring of it since 2005. it goes above and beyond expectation and has never actually been topped
