Would I like Star Ocean if I'm a big Star Trek fan?

I heard it's "inspired by Star Trek" but I've only seen clips from the voiced opening with the CAPTAIN'S LOG type of stuff... which I'm fearing might be the only similarity to Star Trek in the entire game.

Why don't you just try it out to see if you like it?

You don't just *try* an RPG that takes hours to get going and last for dozens of hours.

Why are you trying to stifle discussion of retro games on /vr/?

yes u do.

don't they just use swords and stuff in star ocean like it's a regular fantasy rpg? doesn't seem very star trek-y to me

Yeah that's why I'm very skeptical of it. Everything outside the introduction cutscenes appears to be a standard fantasy RPG.

Its not really a spoiler but the first act of the game:
>medeival fantasy viallage, but its cat eared people
>swords and magic are normal in this world
>classic trope of a young man and his friends going on first rpg adventure
>mystery disease causing petrification is spreading
>while exploring the origin of this curse they encounter what is obviously a star trek "away team"
>accidental first contact as the away team are also investigating the petrification(nanomachine weapon that has been unleashed)
>the away team bring the jrpg heros to their ship, they have phasers as weapons, etc
>the space people are from the "earth federation", again blatantly star trek
>the evil lizardmen monsters that are terrorizing catgirl planet are actually alien invaders the federation is at war with as well
>it turns out the petrification bioweapon actually originated from cat planet after all, a remnant with a war with the demonlord from 300 years ago
>star trek team and jrpg swordsmen must travel back in time to the great war to find a cure

So its blatantly star trek but from the perspective of primitive jrpg villagers, a botched first contact and then they team up. Very star trek based in the setting but no so much in the gameplay. The away team end up using bow and arrow or martial arts since they cant bring future weapons with them.

Thanks, it doesn't seem like the type of game I was hoping it was tho... oh well

You might want to try Phantasy Star series instead
>>

Phantasy star is even less star trek, it is just jrpg on a space colony.
>>
Star ocean 2 you get to go on a rampage early game with a phaser (renamed phase gun on psp). Its overpowered as fuck, as it should be you you eventually lose it as the story progresses.
>>
>>12513567
the star trek parts are really brief and compartmentalized

I heard that Star Ocean 4 (non-retro) is actual sci-fi instead of fantasy with slight sci-fi touches, but I don't know how true that is.

Yes it starts with humanities first steps in space exploration, meeting space elves who are vulcans but cast spells, time travel back to area 51 in the 1950s to meet the first alien (a
Lewd catloli), and a lot of planet hopping and more time travel. The fedederation members still use sword for the MC and a bow for the girl (with a lot of DOA tier ass juggle and hip thrusts as she shoots). So again not very star trek like. The planet hopping is nice though.
Just dont play xbox360 version, the worst dub in history. Ps4 remake has anime portraits and JP audio and is less painful.

Tl;dr sorry not retro.

this is true, 4 is a proper sci fi romp that gives you a ship and has you planet hopping from the start of the game. you still spend some time on backwater planets but not for half the game. unfortunately it has not one but two of the most annoying, unlikeable party members ever devised in a jrpg that really bring down an otherwise excellent game with advanced level cringe.

This is kinda like an RPG, you have some stats you can build with your training at the academy. It can get a little too complex; too many little menus that all do one specific thing.

forgot pic lol

Buck rogers RPG on genesis is also great.
Planet hopping
Random encounters in space
Space combat lets you target weapons, power plant, engines, or jist irradiate the crew causing mass casualties and then salvage the ship.
The ground combat is class SSI du geoms and dragons, same rules even.
