So this is the first RPG ever made, it's so weird you don't have party members

I honestly loved it. It's a full on sincere video game with a very simple yet well executed story and the 1-man army makes the game a lot more melancholic and introspectivr than later games with big parties, this is just you alone going to slay a scary dragon lord in a hostile castle. Battles all being 1 on 1 make the balance always fair, but there's less room for error too. It does feel amazing when at the end game you can kill dragons like it's nothing, the sense of power scaling is solid.
Also it's a rather small game for RPGs standards but besides the fact this is a 1986 game, the smaller scale map also plays into the melancholic feel of loneliness. You're not always reaching new kingdoms and lively towns all the time, you are just trying traveling through your own country, seeing how it's in danger and dying slowly.
A real masterpiece of video games, there's a reason Dragon Quest is as big as it is.
