As a Nintendo kid I was so assmad that I could only play the gba version of that game. I would even use the GCN attachment to play it on the TV and pretend I got the "cool" 3d version of the game instead of the 2d beat em up.
I was an adult before I realized that the gba version was actually the better game overall.

The Jedi Academy series, Tie-Fighter, Star Wars on the SNES, that racing game. There are so many great Star Wars games and Star Wars-inspired games. You could argue that every good game is Star Wars-like.

The KOTOR games and Rogue Squadron for me. I'm biased though since I really don't like Star Wars as an IP outside of a few various games so I don't really care that KOTOR 2 goes against the 'spirit' of the OG movies or whatever.

A biy unpolished but I spent more time on rebllion than any other star wars game. The fleet combat is rebel hit and run with fighters, while empire js about "more big ships win", but sending in hero units like Han or Vader to fuck up enemy shipyards and other facilities is great.
>>

Tbf almost none of the games listed so far are bad. SW pumped out consistently good games back in the day

You listed one of them. RotS console version is an excellent hack and slash style game. You have good taste, son. I'm proud of you. Another great one is Star Wars Episode II: The Clone Wars, also on the OG Xbox. Your Mother didn't see me for three days straight after a work buddy let me borrow that one. Those were the days.. the newer star wars games are kinda gay ass. Don't care for them

Juat a note on rebllion, it came with a 170 page manual and was non-inuitive, especially how shipyard and planetary development works.

It makes you really appreciate quality of life improvements over the last 2 decades for games like stellaris. You have to put on your 1997 googles to enjoy rebellion. People either love it or hate it.
>>
>>12598105
Pretty much anything with Kyle in it is top tier. I still think Dark Forces 1 feels the best to go back to, especially with TFE. SotE also doesn't get enough love because it filters zoomies with how it handles and its camera.
>>
>>12600021
I still remember that area early on in Super Empire Strikes Back where you could farm extra lives.
>>
>>12600019
RotS on console is crap because of the reason most SW games are crap: the lightsabers feel like wiffle bats. Yes, they leave slash marks and the droids eventually fall apart but many of the enemies just take too many hits to kill.
The force powers were cool, though, it had a great implementation of the grapple

White I don't agree with your assessment of the game (I liked i a lot) I do understand the criticism. I tried replaying Republic Commando not that long ago and it's just frustrating how weak your normal blaster rifle is against even the most basic of enemies.
However a 'realistic' lightsaber would be a one-hit-kill on nearly all human-sized enemies so it's understandable it's gonna get nerfed in games. Especially when it's your only weapon. RotJ strikes a good balance IMO. Curious to hear what SW game has a better swordplay than this one according to you.
>>
>>12600523
Well like I said, I felt like the droid bits were done well, it's really later on when you're fighting other humanoids that it starts to feel spongey. Among retro SW games, Jedi Academy and Jedi Knight II probably have the best implementation in that you constantly have to duel, so your hits being blocked feels better than your hits simply stinging.
Overall I think 7th gen Force Unleashed beats ROTS slightly. It's clearly based on the same mechanics, but because the consles could throw big waves of Stormies at you, they were able to make them weaker and so you beat them quicker. Plus the enemy AI is so much better there, it doesn't feel like you're just knocking dudes back until they die, enemies will run from you and work to avoid your hits, and there's a fair bit of hands flying off of killed enemies. The boss fights have the same issue as always though, there's really no way to make those compelling unless it came down to "get parried by your opponent until the QTE kill comes up".
Again I know it can't be perfect for gameplay reasons, but it would be nice if a Star Wars game implemented some kind of dismemberment system a la the modern Ninja Gaidens. The only way to really make SW weapons into their true selves would be to have a musou style game I feel.

This is the most underrated Star Wars game and got so much less attention than it deserved. Excellent game. Except for the awkward 3d ship combat (which you can skip over), it’s definitely a hidden gem imo. Tons of mods and an active community to this day as well.

>until you saw TPM for the first time

Honestly I don't remember anyone being outright disappointed by Phantom Menace, plenty of people thought it had stupid moments or hated Jarjar, but for Star Wars fans it gave a lot of things they wanted. Obi-wan and Qui-gon doing Jedi shit nonstop was great, Duel of the fates kicking while Darth Maul opened his double lightsaber made everyone salivate, and so did Natalie Portman (then again I'm a bit partial because I wanted to fuck her ever since I watched Leon as a 10 year old).

And in retrospect it aged like wine. I barely recall fuck all from episode 2 except the laser light jerkoff show in the arena, and ep 3 made Anakins fall look kind of lame. But even then the prequels were a masterpiece compared to the Disney sequel trilogy.
>>
>>12604448
Phantom looks great in parts (except for the dated CGI), but it's as annoying as every damn Star Wars episode. Lucas needs a script supervisor or someone better than him, like Spielberg and Kasdan, to rein in his dumb ideas.

I was like 8 when I saw it for the first time in theaters with my dad and I got cringe from jar jar and anakin. I was really underwhelmed, I thought Titan AE was way more my style. revenge of the sith in theaters was quite kino though, I was genuinely shocked at the killing of the younglings.

Pic related is literally my first memories of a videogame as a baby, my dad playing this shit on dos. It was fucking scary. I didnt even know what Star Wars was yet.
>>
>>12604092
Yes that took me a long time to figure out how to get maintenance points. An embarrassingly long time, however I was a dumb kid in like 7th grade and had never played something so complex before. C&C being my bread and butter on PC. It really sucks when you are on a tight rope of resources and then all of a sudden you didn’t have enough squads covering certain planets and the spies start nuking your facilities and it snowballs and you start losing ships ect because of it. The worst is when the game decides you’re doing to well and you get like three or four natural disasters in which succession on some of your major resource planets. Still one of my favorite games of all time not just Star Wars games.
>>
>>12605475
*quick not which
>>
>>12604448
Yea Disney working overtime to make the prequels look good. Personally I was bored out of my mind as an 8th grader watching TPM. I almost asked my dad if we could leave during the pod racing scene I was that checked out even as a kid. We did get some great games tho from the prequels. The same cannot be said of Disney Star Wars where if they do release a game it’s god awful trash. Outlaws? Broken and buggy and all retro SW put it to shame. Same can be said for the Battlefront games where I think even on steam charts the classics btfo of EAs pretty but ultimately shitty battlefront games. I think the only modern Star Wars game to even do well or be a decent experience at all was fallen order and even that is mainly just a straight rip off of the much superior but not retro Force Unleashed.
>>
>>12604448
I remember watching TPM and thinking it was fine, but finding Jar Jar incredibly annoying. One of my friends fell asleep though. The problem I think for a lot of people is that if you grew up on the OT, if you didn't make something that was at least that magical it was always going to be a disappointment. I think this may have been different for children where this was their first exposure to Star Wars.

That said - we did at least get Racer out of it, which is still one of the best Hover racers ever made IMO.

For me, trying to hit a range of genres, my fave Star Wars games are:
Jedi Knight
Jedi Academy
Shadows of the Empire
Rogue Squadron
Rebel Assault 2
Tie Fighter
Racer
KOTOR
Super Star Wars

It feels weird though given Lucasarts other big exports that there was never a P&C for Star Wars, but I guess combat was such a big thing it would have been clunky otherwise.

All I can say is I was thrilled when I saw it as a kid on the cusp of adolescence. I wasn’t bored at all. Then again, I had been totally marinated in Star Wars since the early 90s (vhs, toys, games, books, comics, everything), so I was very forgiving of any faults in the film. I will admit the middle part of the film has become less interesting as time has passed.
>>12605475
Yep, rebellion is a hard game but very fun once you understand the mechanics. Usually when I was mismatched on refineries and mines I’d conquer or sway a planet with a lot of what I needed.
>>12605669
>Did any you guys play Star Wars Galaxies when it was active?
Yes, before the CU, and it was not a very good game imo. Besides a lot of poor design decisions, it just couldn’t capture the scale of the Star Wars universe as described in the films and lore, so inevitably you feel constrained. Not saying it can’t be done, this simply wasn’t it. Everyone there was just grinding to be a Jedi anyway, kinda boring.

The alpha that leaked was more fun than EAs version. Also, if it had come out you would be able to seamlessly transition from ground combat to air combat to space combat yet somehow EA couldn’t even get air combat right in its games. Also Dark Obi Wan Kenobi would’ve been bad ass.

I was the same as you. Watched new Hope on repeat it’s some of my earliest memories. Played tie fighter to death and SotE blew my mind on release. Read Heir to the Empire and wanted that to be the trilogy of movies instead of the prequels so that may have had something to do w it but I distinctly being bored out of my mind except for the duel at the end when I was in 8th grade. My dad even took me to the new hope rerelease and I had a blast w that but for me I’ve always hated the prequels for being so bland and boring.
