>>12606081 This overlooks the fact that the basic premise of the story determines the overall look, feel and atmosphere of a game. If Doom had been about sushi chefs hunting fish or kids having a water gun fight it would have been a whole other game. The text blurbs are just one small part of it.
>>12606120 The same could be said of porn if you think about it. If the story is about somebody dealing with intestinal distress, it's probably going to be scat porn. If it's about someone being cuckholded, then part of the porn will be someone masturbating on a couch. The story, while not very consequential in and of itself, can still shape the end product and your enjoyment of it.
>>12605759 some games are good because of the story, but not all games have to have a good story. best game of all time is quake 3 and it had no story whatsoever
>>12607498 some games are good because of single-player, but not all games have to have a single-player campaign. best game of all time is quake 3 and it had no single-player
>>12606081 I used to think he was being short-sighted but over time I just can't bring myself to care about the story in games anymore even when it's not that disruptive to the gameplay. >I just want a good story! Learn to read and then read books, nigger. There are much better stories and characters in literature than vidya will ever conceive of.
>>12605759 The only reason their was any text at all was to let you know the episode was over and just putting "please insert next disk" is gay as fuck so instead they put "you dicked down some demons and busted a dozen nuts please insert next disk"
>>12606081 he's right. lorefags btfo. go read books instead if you want story >>12607386 ofc he does, he even played consoles with his kids on the regular(dunno how old they are now)
>>12606081 >Plot is very important. You don't want to play level after level with no connection whatsoever, or without the strong story line surrounding the plot. - Roman Ribaric
>>12606081 Even though I like games that do good story and lore, I unironically still agree with him. Video games would be a lot better if they went back to this concept. Look at how some of the best games of all time were light on story or it was simple. Duke Nukem 3D, Doom of course, Pokemon, your standard beat 'em up, Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil, etc. Faggots wanting 2deep4u stories have ruined this medium.
>>12616641 Story doesn't have to be overwrought and cinematic. More games should invest into environmental storytelling and evocative level design. And just creating the world that you want to live in.
>>12606120 Yeah. That isn't to say that Doom needed an elaborate plot, but the idea that you're a space marine going solo against the forces of hell, descending from tech bases into hell itself, adds to the atmosphere of the game, as do the cheeky little end of episode story blurbs. Does every game need an elaborate story? No, and some games are more suited for it than others. Doom would be hindered if you were stopped every five minutes to listen to Doom guy bemoan his situation, talk about his dead space marine friend, or pontificate on the dangers of science run amok, and Silent Hill would be hindered if the entire game were just you blindly fighting monsters until you happened to rescue your daughter at the end after fighting a random big monster with zero context.
