Koudelka basically stands out for having great VA while it was still being figured out in the era and specifically on PS1. As a game I'd say it strangely combines elements from JRPGs and survival horror for better or worse. How does the writing in this series compare to the best written Japanese JRPG series* - the Trails in the Sky trilogy?

*Best written series that I played. The only other JRPGs I played are Final Fantasy VII (only the beginning part, I couldn't handle the disappointment), Chrono Trigger and uhhh... Anachronox is the actual best "JRPG" for me but it's not actually made in Japan so some people might get offended. I also like Septerra Core more than FF VII and Chrono Trigger, the two games it ripped off.

Koudelka and Esmeralda are unique in the regard that they are confirmed to be gypsies.
What also amuses me is that Koudelka was very in tune with spirituality/magic and apparently she was heavily discriminated against by her own because of that. In reality, gypsies are not only superstitious as fuck but they also respect and fear their hag-witches so Koudelka would be a gypsy queen in their caravan.
She also complained about being sexually abused but gypsies do that constantly. Child marriage is rampant among them. I even saw people arguing that Hungary's age of consent of 14 years was set precisely so they don't have to jail every gypsy.
All of it shows that the Japanese had no idea what they were talking about when writing the game but I don't fault them for it. You need to live close to the gypsies to understand them. A bunch of them live in my shitty European town, lots fucked off when my country joined the EU. One of the things we learned as children was to avoid them. I also remember one of them tried to scam my father a long time ago. And my distant aunt let a gypsy family flat, they intentionally clogged the pipes and turned the water on, barely a couple of years ago.

But it's worse in every way. SH2 judgement rings are not only customizeable, they're affected by status ailments and they determine how optimal an attack is kinda like a dice roll you have more control over, the QTEs in E33 are completely meaningless, they simply determine in a very binary way if a move works or doesn't and they can even be turned off with no cost to the player, unlike automatic judgement rings which make the ring realiable but always weaker than manual use.
E33 sucks dick, AND Shadow Hearts blows it out of the fucking water on a fundamental level.
