It is turn based war game autobattler with elements of 4x, but no city building at all
The big appeal of Dominions is the fucking stupid amount of units, spells, magic items, effects and all the permutations of those that means that you can play this game for 100s of hours and still learn new shit

Talk to me about your favorite under-appreciated nation.
I like LA Man because they flew too close to the sun in MA and were cursed because of it. All of their mages and priests are old men who shepparded the nation out from under the Curse and wreckless rule of the Mothers and Daughters of Avalon.
Mechanically, the nation screams "give us nature magic" but thematically the old men see nature magic as a return to the Old Ways and a loss of control.
The nation can be hard to play in MP because the bag of tricks that they have the easiest access to is kind of shallow. They got nerfed a fair bit from Dom 5 to Dom 6 by the theft of a lot of air magic into glamour with only a few minor concessions to show for it. Additionally, none of their unique events were improved or changed in Dominions 6 and a lot of MP games play with story events turned off because of their impact.
Nonetheless, I still love them.

I really like Sauromatia. I dont know appreciated they are in the mp scene, but fuck they are a cool nation.
In particular I like their tight reins tech which allows you to some real wacky shit with undisiplined troops that is just as likely get you and your enemies fucked over.

What are you even supposed to do with most level one mages? Cast itty bitty aoe1 buffs? And is W1 really the wettest noodle early and most useful later?

W1 is not the most useful later but it does move from "why are you recruiting this" tier to "Useful at filling a niche" tier with the right research.
D1s can do basic skelly spam and remote site search.
S1s need no explanation.
B1s are born kidnappers.
G1s summon warrior illusions and cast luck.
The others have generally useful point buffing for thugs and units.
A1 and N1 can also summon hawks and trees.

I SUCK at this game, but for the sake of thread engagement
F1: 1 gem(Fire in a Jar - F1 Const 3) to Phoenix Power into F2. Later on you can spam will 'o wisp for 1 gem (again Fire in a Jar) and they are kind of annoying
A1: Owl Quil sweatshop, otherwise kind of doodoo unless you have accessible Storm. Maybe Gust of Winds can help on your expansion by breaking up formations with stuns if you are lucky
W1: Quickness/Liquid Body/Breath of winter for thugging if you can put your hands on some AoE weapons I guess. Ring of water breathing to get down where is wetter.
E1: Same as F1, in pinch use 1 gem to power up, and now you can give your troops AoE Giant Strength and Armor Buffs plus reinvigoration. For thugs you have temper flesh and some stone/iron skin. Summon of ogres if you need to break dows walls before the enemy can react
S1: .....

D1: Remote Site search to get the BigNecro going. Plop some skellies before passing out, I guess they can bait enemy mage-priests into casting holy spells instead of blast your actual guys. If you have a high profile mage with D1, you can give him a skull stuff to twiceborn and give the staff to someone else after it. I think most people consider Reanimation a waste of gems, and it kind of is due to how easily priest can blast your skellies, but in a pinch or if used with purpose it can give you the mass and/or the undead to counter something nasty or get underwater
N1: Advance and cast to heal and keep point buffing your frontline
>implying the casting AI ever cast the shit you need
There is a tech i've seen where you use N1 mages to heal undermanned comunions slaves from fatigue damage. Cool stuff, but:
>implying the casting AI ever cast the shit you need
Also lastly, N1 lets you forge some boots with reinvigoration, so, sweatshop duty for them if you are planning on stacking reinvig on your mages.
G1: Spam illusions for that sweet sweet false damage, as well as silencing wall archers. Luck is fucking great, especially if fighting giants, absolutely worth the point buff. Twillight spell automatically power them up to G2 and now you can cast an AoE Luck and spam even more illusions before taking a nap. With 1 gem (Dream Spool gives you a temp but it is Const 5) you can cast Shroud of Bewilderment
I love Glamour
B1: I dont know what I'm doing with blood most of the time, so I dont have any takes. The have the blood version of communions and that is all I know. Make them build for themselves the item that boosts blood hunting and good hunting.

>a few imps out?
In my experience, a few imps will just fly all over the place and land in a tile surrounded by 6 enemies and die.
I feel like as it usually goes with flying units, you need to have mass before they become functional. So you might need a few B1 casting to make them not just become a waste of slaves, or maybe try to time the cast to when the lines clash so that the imps have chance to form a useful mass

Isn't that comparable to point buffs though? A single astral mage etherealing ~6 soldiers in an army of a hundred isn't doing much. But when you send ten of them, suddenly half the army is ethereal.
6/12 imps depending on the slave usage on a single mage. Or 60-120 imps by sending out all the unskilled mages is similar.
