AMOLED displays turn off black pixels that display total black (#000000), whereas normal displayys still back-light the unused pixels, making the screen brighter even with a dark wallpaper and giving it an unpleasant sheen in the dark.
AMOLED wallpapers would be any wallpaper where the "black" part of the wallpaper is truly #000000 Black, so the AMOLED screen will actually turn off the pixels.
The enclosed picture gives a good example; the phone on the left (if you can see it) is using a true #000000 wallpaper and has an AMOLED screen, so even turned up to full brightness, since the pixels aren't displaying a color, the acreen doesn't turn them on.
The phone on the right isn't AMOLED, so the "black" wallpaper is extremely backlit.
