Thing is, he really did have a few things in common with those people - depression, self destructive tendencies and a longing for purpose.

He's a talented, funny, artistic and smart guy who touched upon some deep, existential themes in his otherwise insane and disgusting videos. So he sees things differently than most of the clout chasing materialistic content creators and musicians. I think this is what makes him depressed and insecure.

Also, consider who he is as a human being. He's a happa who bounced between Australia, Japan and the US for most of his life. His sense of identity and even nationality is probably very weak. So his videos and music are what gives him deeper meaning. When he finds himself unfufilled with his work (see TVFilthyFrank), he loses what makes him whole and he slumps into an existential depression until he can come up with something new and worthwhile (Joji).

Of course he probably has problems with addiction and romance. Not the first entertainer/artist with those problems and certainly not the last. I'd say he's a great success given who he is. Much better than any of the sad angry fucks discussing him on the internet. And comparing him to Ian? George won the lotterty if you compare him to Ian.
