There is a giant stupid bunch of nonsense that happened after S1 that involved firing everyone who actually made the anime good and S2 feels like the people who made it actively hated S1, its director and everything it stood for. So yes tl;dr it's bad but the longer story is much more painful. Basically if you end up liking Kemono Friends just never fucking touch S2 and watch Kemurikusa which was made by S1's director instead, it's also very good.

Dude, if you like Sakura, go for Kobato, it is by CLAMP and it is the most heartwarming anime I've ever watched.
There is some bullshit subplot but it is completely irrelevant, enjoy the slice of life, the children, the protagonist, the warm feelings.
I might watch it again with my wife once she becomes my wife, such a beautiful little show.
Also seconding Puipui Molcar.
And Natsume Yuujinchou is very comfy, there is always a bit of drama but it is episodic and idyllic.

Mitsuboshi Colors is about some kids going on urban hijinks.
I recall ranking of kings having that mix of drama and that invincible lustrous moral righteousness
dr. stone is pretty optimistic and humanist but it's not dazzlingly bright which I think is what you are looking for. characters are only alright.
I hesitantly suggest Saiki K, but maybe the MC is too cold.
I remember one specific season of precure getting acclaimed a few years back

Tsukikage ran. Episodic SoL, old school anime feel + homage to old samurai cinema so it feels extra classic, cucumber cool mc works great with the fun energetic supporting character. The stories themselves aren't that amazing and the stakes are kept local but are engaging enough with satisfying payoffs. Romance is as good as nonexistent. Very good animu.

>Takarajima
Retelling of the story of Treasure Island, literally as one might expect, pirates hunt for treasure, but the story is so much more than that. It is a coming of age story for the protag Jim. The adaptation is pretty close to the novel and is considered one of the best btw.
>Heidi
The full titles is Alps no Shoujo Heidi. Again a novel adaptation, it is about a girl who was orphaned and the bitter man (the grandfather) who takes her in. There is also a kind shepherd and an invalid who is unable to walk (I will not spoil any more than this, but the best things that happened did by the end).
>Tamura Shigeru
Most of these are short films. The guy writes children's storybooks, but he is very art oriented. These short films reflect that.
>Pui Pui Molcar
Adventures of car-guinea pig hybrid creatures. It is stop motion and episodes are about 3 minutes long each for two seasons.
>Doraemon
Adventures of a boy and his blue robot cat from the future. I would encourage watching the Stand by Me films if you do not want 2500+ episodes of anime. They are standalone. Tfe boy (Nobita) discovers happiness in the first and in the second meets the one he misses most in the past and then helps himself get married in the future. These are retellings of earlier episodes that aired 1979-1984-ish by the way.
>Ie Naki Ko
A boy learns that he is really adopted and goes on a quest to find his true parents, he makes new friends, goes through loss, but in the end learns what is happiness.
>The Little Prince
Full title is Hoshi no Oujisama Petit Prince. It is about a boy who lives on an asteroid, he cares for a rose girl. One day he catches a comet and goes to Earth for adventures, but in the end he finds a true sense of belonging and responsibility.

Does this even have subtitles? I have only ever seen the dub, since it has a cult following in the US.

It does, it released a while ago on DVD.
There's also a very recent BD remaster that looks much better, but it's JP only. I'm rewatching it right now as i'm learning Japanese.
