Those are alchemical symbols.

gnostic themes are throughout the game. you meet agrippa who is kept alive by vitae, archon collecting loosh myth. agrippa being the archon, humorous and intelligent, knowledgeable and interested in loosh first out of curiosity then out of necessity, trapped in the same jail as us. alexander being the demiurge, trying to reenter his dimension, pleroma via vitae, loosh. Daniel is humanity, drinking from the waters of ignorance, amnesia potion, in order to eat from the tree of knowledge, but since his ancestor or initial iteration already did this, he is burdened with original sin, the orb, apple, brings shadows, sin, following him.
