Narrow board and small hard wheels make for easier flip tricks and slides. Wide board and large soft wheels make general riding, balancing and controlling the board easier and more enjoyable. All three can make a big difference but it's always a tradeoff. Bearings don't really matter as a beginner unless you get generic brand shit ones that don't roll well or wear out quick.

I recently realised I've been wearing shoes that are 2 sizes too large for me while skating. I suspect this, combined with the fact I was wearing lifestyle Vans instead of Skating Vans might have been the source of some foot pain after a fairly short amount of skating

Vans in general have enormous heels. I bought a pair of sk8 his and the amount of slop in the heel even with the shoes laced ridiculously tight was too absurd to put up with, it felt like I was trying to skate in snow boots.
Give the Nike low/mid blazers a shot, the heels are fairly narrow but the forefoot has a good amount of room.

There's a million other things, but these were the things that changed the game for me. Especially jumping a tad bit forward and diagonally WHILE flicking up and out through the nose (not off to the side).

Ever since they redesigned their shoes and made a dedicated skate line, it's been downhill.
The non skate versions blow through in a matter of days at best, and the skate versions have thicker outsoles and a really thick insole, so there's way less room for your foot plus no board feel.
Vans were great when they were $30 in a market where everything else was $50+, but now they're charging you $70 for a shoe that's worse than it used to be while everything else in the market is much closer in price.

For me, I am sticking to the Kourt Graphics.
