You know I've been doing some thinking as to why yuri appeals to me, and after a lot of deliberating I think I've boiled it down to three key points.
a) I am attracted to women and I think they're cute. Watching them do cute things with one another makes me smile, and seeing them make out is hot, but that's a given.
b) Yuri relationships are interesting because they usually start off as friendships with either one or both parties innocent/oblivious. Girls can get close to one another under the guise of just being "friends" whereas a man and woman will always interpret any advance as an obvious sign of attraction. I like this "friends-to-lovers" scenario and the ambiguity around it because it means you can get away with more intimate scenarios without permanently crossing the line into definite romance territory. I'm sure the exact same thing applies to yaoi but I have no interest in that.
c) Maybe the most important thing of all is that I can't actually self-insert as the protagonist, but this is good because it makes any potential drama less painful or cringe-inducing. Any situation where a male protagonist gets cucked or fumbles an opportunity, it always leaves me feeling pissed off, whereas if it's drama between two girls then I still care about them as characters but I don't get angry as much. It's less personal I guess - I'm still emotionally invested but it's purely as a spectator.

Secondly, a default BL romance is still pretty different from a default yuri romance.
