Time to bet on your coins and making theories, boys.
No, I'm not gonna dump the chapter with this capcha, sorry
Yuiga will be the last man standing in this museum deathmatch, mark my words.

He's either going to be the first man down, on the A rank side anyway, or the last one standing for sure.

I was planning to make a thread but it took a while to figure out how to rip from Mangaplus. Guess I'll dump

Nice. In the time between last chapter and this one I reread the whole series (surprisingly quick read).

One thing I thought would be an issue before rereading was the transition from the first part of the story, which focused on A-ranks and Neighbors, to the B-rank wars and away test. But as it turns out, we skip past the low-tier shitters quickly and the top B-ranks are almost at the A-rank level or even used to be, like Kageura Squad. So it wasn't nearly as much of a downgrade as I remembered it being. With that in mind, I've been really looking forward to this fight.

...Having said that, this chapter already shows that my original thought wasn't that far off, I think. The average quality of the A-rank *squads* is much higher, especially with the unique Trigger loadouts. Even if individual fighters like Kage and Ninomiya and Hyuse can go toe to toe with any A-ranker, can the same be said for the squads as a whole? The A-rank strike team that just teleported in would easily solo any B-rank war. Same goes for Tamakoma-1, who are apparently being allowed to use their custom Triggers. There are some unknowns like Katagiri and Kusakabe squads that we haven't seen much from, and others like Arashiyama haven't seemed that impressive compared to top B-ranks, but it still seems a stark difference overall.

Point is, I'm expecting this to go to wide-range tactics and probably unorthodox sacrificial strategies, because in a straight up fight the B-ranks are way outclassed even with the likes of Ninomiya and Tamakoma-2. I guess it's the sort of environment Mikumo might excel in, so good on Kodera there.

It's also laid out in a way that makes for quick reading. Clear action (and a lot of it) with good but not overly detailed or messy art, plenty of talking but straightforward and easy to read. That, and it's good! Stayed up late several nights cuz I couldn't put it down without getting to the end of a fight.

Making the sheath disappear so that it won't get in the way during a fight. Much cheaper than dissipating and reforming Kogetsu itself each time.

I love the contrast between Tachikawa and company being all chuuni and tryharding meanwhile you've got Tamakoma-1 being flung around the map like a baseball, and Konami seemingly trying not to throw up.
The attitude of the A ranks really makes it hard to believe this ends anyway other than a blowout for them. Any victory the B ranks get is most likely going to be symbolic at best.

>>

I'm going to assume whatever she just did now with the portable warps must have occupied her Main Trigger, or she just wasn't using her Main until now (Idaten/Skanda is on Sub)

>>285784550
Full Arms, Geist and Connector guzzle Trion like crazy, so they're probably not gonna use them willy-nilly. Geist especially seems like it can't be deactivated prematurely and guarantees Torimaru will bail out in like 3 minutes.

>>285784626
Kodera's doing his best, but goddamn, getting read like a book like that has to sting a little.
>>
damn that felt too short. i liked kodera's play, it was a bit unrealistic to have that level of mindreading between him and whatshisface, but if we handwave that he made the right decision. adjustments and surprises later on will have greater impact if they seem predictable in the beginning.
>>
>>285784684
It feels a bit early for Osamu's time to shine, I expect some fuckups.
>>
>>285784711
Imagine if that one was Katori.
>>
>>285784771
To be fair, they are literally the same rank. It wouldnt be that hard to believe you could read kodera like a book since....you know, he is the most by the books guy ever.
>>
>>285784593
I'm banking on Megane keikaku earning a narrow comeback victory, but Ashihara might surprise me. It could be a lesson in dealing with overwhelmingly powerful foes, I don't think they said the provisional squads need to win per se.
>>
>>285784626
>>285784747
I do appreciate that Kodera knows that he's being read and factors it into his plans. Characters being believably smart and not keikaku wizards is one of WT's greatest strengths.
>>

>>
>>285784711
Thanks OP
>>
>>285784338
Splitting up... it still feels hardly balanced.
>>
>>285784771
To be fair, there's really only 2 choices in that situation: either reinforce so that the pincer doesn't work, or attack an undefended terminal. And there's only so many reasonable choices to be commander.
>>
>>285784921
I don't think it was ever supposed to be balanced, just like the odds when you're in some neighbor's home planet.
>>
>>285784747
We don't know one of her triggers, right? Skanda is the flash step and Idaten is another Kogetsu sub we haven't seen yet. I think Yoneya also has one?

>>285784796
Possibly not much room for fuckups at all. I think he'll clutch is in the home stretch, but now it'll be more general strats like his abandon-half idea.
>>
>>285784923
the unrealistic part is knowing it is precisely kodera. its one thing to understand him well, but there could have been others that made the same decision. the profiling of the player type made sense, but not narrowing it down to exact player.
>>
>>285784921
Yuba has been mentioned as training against the top ranks in solo, so with support it feels like it should be possible. "Should"
>>

Mako is the mystery trigger in BBF
>>
>>285784976
Yuba can't job twice in a row, the narrative won't allow it.
>>
>>285784970
Nah, it makes sense if you think about it. Remember the rules. If you use those and narrow it down to the captains, then theres only really 4 choices: Osamu, Kodera, Oji, Suwa. You can make arguments for others of course, but those would be the prime 4 suspects. And out of those 4 suspects, only one of them would pivot hard to defence, really. I could be wrong, but Osamu would panic and commit HARD, Oji would probably also Commit, and Suwa would most likely go with the flow and try and break out.
>>
>>285784684
Ahhh Mikumo, save me
>>

Mizukami can also be a commander, although I bet he would go on an all out counter offensive.
>>
>>285785119

>>
>they just went right into it
Damn, I love it!
It doesn't seem like the grouped fights are going to stay that way, since there were lots of snipers and shooters.
Also, Kodera asked Mikumo... I was expecting him to struggle on his own a bit more before that. Though, realizing he's most likely being completely read by the enemy commander must have pushed him to break his mold.
>>
>>285785172
Jackson is still doing his dissertation on how to be a strategist at Megane University, he hasn't graduated yet.

>>
>>285785165
This is true, i did consider him myself, but when you factor in that he's usually playing second fiddle to Ikoma, you could interpret that as a lack of interest in taking command if he doesnt need to.
>>
>>285785172
If you wanna throw the fight immediately, sure

>>285785066
>>285785257
You're right, I was thinking of Mako

>>285785354
I definitely thought he just couldn't be arsed. That, and he himself notes that a board or strategy game and battlefield command are two different things, being a genius at academics and shogi doesn't necessarily mean he'd be a great tactician.
>>
>>285785354
There's also how they practically spent all the part 1 test observing them. Mizukami himself was never that gung-ho about being a leader and only did so because he was forced into that position, and got more and more tired of it as the test went on. It's easy to predict that he probably wouldn't want to take the reins as overall commander.

A bit more reread-blogposting, if you'll bear with me.
>Pre- rank wars arcs
One thing that stood out to me is that some characters like Kitora, Jin and Miwa were practically part of the main cast and got borderline written off afterwards. The first invasion really is a before-and-after for the series. Not that it's a bad thing, I love the Rank Wars -- the shift to a pseudo-spokon format does wonders for WT.
>Osamu's keikakus
I remembered there being more of them and being more impactful, but Ashihara is a better writer than that. I'm continually impressed at how they manage to be usually pretty common sense stuff than 5D convoluted future sight (that role's taken), the sort of plan that you go "of course, why didn't I think of that" after. It makes sense that Osamu is simultaneously highly regarded by some and underestimated by others. Quick rundown of the Rank Wars and his ploys:
- R1 N/A
- R2 clever map pick and high-level strat tailored to the teams, shapes the entire battle from the start. Not much else other than making himself a nuisance
- R3 playing catch-up most of the fight and rolling with the punches. Manages to direct Yuma and Chika effevtively but it turns out to be another Yuma carry and narrow win since he can't pull through himself
- R4 total disaster and it's his fault
- R5 total turnaround, almost a power fantasy in how effective he and his tactics are. Even gets a solo kill on megane junior. Teruya manages to keep it honest
- R6 is like R3, playing catch up after being in the crosshairs following a big win. It's actually the Oji show, funnily enough, since he keeps up with and even surpasses Osamu's tactics while easily soloing him and scoring more points. Ojicoin underrated, but Yuma does a particularly clutch carry.
- R7 best fight for my money, total dense bedlam and very entertaining. Hyuse show this time around, Osamu is just backup and doesn't do all that much tactically.
- R8 WE WIN. Would've lost if Chika didn't clutch

>The first invasion really is a before-and-after for the series. Not that it's a bad thing, I love the Rank Wars -- the shift to a pseudo-spokon format does wonders for WT.
Agreed, and I feel this is also something Ashihara and his editor at the time talked about. I think WT always did well in the ToC back then but maybe they felt like the old format wasn't really good. Showing the agents at school and in their ordinary lives would take too much time and divert attention from what really matters.
>Osamu
Even at the beginning it is funny how in a world full of trion and weird sci-fi constructs, he literally took some pliers and found his way into Border. I love how he doesn't reinvent the wheel, just uses simple tactics and whatever is at hand. Ashihara is writing Taichi in a similar vein, shame they parted ways.

>>285784603
First big goof. This is totally misusing these squads' strengths.
>>
>>285786777
i was gonna say kodera did nothing wrong, but now i'm not so sure. kodera's decision makes sense in the scope of the entire strategy which is the commander's job, but he is paying a cost for it.
>>
>>285786777
>>285786825
To be fair, didn't Oji pick his team specifically to perform well in the battle phase? Ordering them to get stuck in is playing to their strengths.
>>
>>285786777
They are to distract the advancing enemy force, there are plenty of harassing options. And Kodera's going full survival mode, and for a good reason. Hopefully Osamu will tip the scales
>>
>>285786890
Oji and Utagawa squads are both stupid mobile and Utagawa's is even stealthy. It's like they were made for infiltrating behind enemy lines. And the A ranks' commander (and his operator) are even isolated relatively close by. Pulling them back to get caught up in a straightforward brawl is a waste.
>>
>>285787032
>the A ranks' commander (and his operator) are even isolated relatively close by
Kodera doesn't know that.
>>
>>285783203
Oh shit, I thought it came out tomorrow.
>>
I'm more concerned about where Kako and Mai are hiding
>>
>>285787056
The options for the A rank commander are even more limited than the B rank side. And, based on terminal numbers, both of the viable candidates are over there. If Kodera hasn't realized that and incorporated it into his plans, then that just adds to the mistake.
>>
I've been wanting to see the A-ranks and B-ranks compared for a while. Supposedly there's not that big a gap between the top B-ranks and the As (seeing as how Ninomiya and Kageura squads are the gatekeepers and both got demoted for non-performance-related reasons), but there are several unknowns at play. Futaba and Fuyushima are already showing the tactical advantage of experimental and custom triggers, and we already know what Tamakoma-1 are capable of. Plus, all top 3 attackers just joined the fray and while the provisionals have 3.5 (Kageura), 4 (Murakami) and Hyuse and Yuma, I'm not convinced they can make up the difference in pure battle power.

Mostly though I wanna see how the likes of Miwa and Kusakabe and Katagiri squads measure up to the B-ranks we now know so well.

>I don't think they said the provisional squads need to win per se.
They established conditions for victory and defeat in the second phase, but never actually said the provisional squads needed to win to pass the away mission test. Which it probably isn't. Ultimately this is all an evaluation exercise for Border to try and check its processes and try and see if it could be better utilizing any of its resources. They should be making their decisions based on how individuals performed, not whether or not their side overall won.
>>
>>285787210
Don't forget the significant gap between Tachikawa/Konami and Kage/Murakami/Yuma/Hyuse. Kazama is probably up there too. The only guy of that caliber the B-rank side has is Ninomiya

Lol, lmao. Yuba's fate will be decided here and now, the "attacker killer" is seconds away from becoming a jobber fraud forever.
>Katori, Kikuchi, Kashio & Teruya vs the engineer duo
Considering the situation this counts as good luck of the draw for Katori, ultimately it will depend on how bullshit Cronin & Raizo are but unless they are top 3~ tier this shouldn't be a favorable position for them. Two strong melee fighters and two good ranged supports. Kashio/Kai fighting for the first blood privilege, whoever went in was the one who got killed.
Futaba is missing so she is sneaking around, Izumi in range. Regardless this fight is done, shits fucked, call Chika-strike on their positions.

If A-ranks "win" they are demoted to toilet cleaners for the next month to fix their motivation. They shouldn't "win" they should hard stomp, erase b-ranks on contact and any outcome other than this counts as loss, in fact Yuiga is the only one in a-rank who is allowed to go down without dinging points from A-ranks for poor performance.

Holy shit man. I know we've seen Kazama blocking Despinis with Scorpion, but I don't think we've seen someone block straight-up bullets with a blade just yet.

Chika + Azuma actually. Fighting Konami in melee is waste of resources.
>>

I'd say that's a pretty solid advantage. Or at least has the potential to be one. And they have 3 of the 4 trion monsters.
They're still totally going to lose, though.

Good thing Suwa sent Katori. The only good Osamu would do there is that he might learn a neat raygust trick in the 8 seconds before he died.

>>
>>285788752
he unironically might, he has an insane whirlwind angle through the building, it is risky but the payoff is more than worth it. Ikoma double killing rank 1 & 2 was not on my bingo list but if he does it, instead of paying his dinner debts people will straight up shower him in food.
>>
>>285784626
>>285788146
Arashiyama is pretty scary. He was one of the first to join "current" border and every time his squad fights up they consistently demonstrate the PR squad isn't just for show. And they're A-5 just as a "regular" balanced squad, compared to Tachikawa, Fuyushima, and Kazama teams all having a hard strength they can lean on. Maybe Kusakabe does as well, but we've got no reason to suspect that just yet.

Konami almost never visits HQ to spar. She is obviously above Kazama but we don't know the Jin, Kei, Konami status.

no, that would be Shinoda & Rindo with Shinoda being the official strongest normal trigger user in border and Rindo is his shady rival.
>>
>>285788893
No, that is not the risk, the range & angle he has allows him to strike just Tachikawa & Kazama. The risk comes from him destroying the roof Yuba, Arafune & Kai are on and dropping it on Katori, Kikuchi, Teruya & Kashio. This also removes cover and creates open season for Izumi to turn them all into bullet holes. All in all he should do it, he has like 2 seconds left before they stop striking chuuni poses.
>>
>>285784684
It's impressive how much of a reputation Mikumo has built up despite not being very sociable. Suwa, Ouji, Kodera, and untold others all recognize his scheming abilities despite none of them really knowing him. That people see him around VIPs and in the important board rooms also definitely helps.
>>
>>285788850
Arashiyama squad are 3 all rounder and one sniper.
They should be the dream squad that Border wants, everyone who is not a sniper are capable to do everything.
>>
>>285787354
Kazama is rank 2 to Konami's 3, but she doesn't do Rank Wars and is pretty much sitting on a stockpile from when she grinded them like crazy. So it's impressive that the active attackers haven't overtaken her yet, and also means that it's hard to really gauge her ceiling.
>>

I would say Katori is too important to lose right away (she sure stole Kitora's screentime/role huh) but a) she's worth peanuts and doesn't have too high a Trion stat for her to take that long tk respawn and b) is a smart and agile fighter and would know to run away if the worst comes to pass.
>>
>>285788578
I don't think the difference is as big as you're implying. Several B-rank squads and many more of their aces are A-level.
>>
>>285788850
Now that I think about it It was stated many times that Arashiyama squad got a massive performance boost when Arashiyama stopped being an ace and became a full time captain. On one hand this can be taken as a glaze for Kitora but considering the scary monsters she, and that entire squad are small fish. Now it is obvious that the actual take here was that Arashiyama's power level as a captain > Arashiyama's as an ace and we are about to witness what he can do when left unchecked.
>>
>>285789328
it's been so long, was Osamu privy to that explanation? if so he might devise a counter strategy specifically for Arashiyama
>>
>>285789163
Yup, that is the angle. Roof falls on the team below but if he scores a double kill or even clips their ankles it is omega worth, two attackers without legs against mass ranged are as good as dead.
>>
>>285789053

That probably depends on who you ask. Someone like Shinoda would probably see that kind of balance as ideal. But I bet Rindo prefers overwhelming hax like Fuyushima squad.

Worth noting that Jin invented Scorpion because he was a bit below Tachi with Kogetsu, but it's anyone's guess where he ranks without Fujin compared to Konami and Tachi nowadays. Very likely third at worst though, sorry Kazama.
>>

A-ranks have massive advantage in the information game. People are missing out that A-ranks have just supervised this whole test. They know how the personalities play out and what they are likely to do. Colossal tactical advantage aside they have a massive edge in information and the first strike privilege. It is incredibly rigged.
>>

>One thing that stood out to me is that some characters like Kitora, Jin and Miwa were practically part of the main cast and got borderline written off afterwards
Did you notice how Kitora was watching practically every one of T-2's rank wars? Even in their very first one, which Mikumo didn't participate in, Ashihara had Miwa and Yoneya watching from the stands and Kitora watching on the squadroom computer with Arashiyama also watching from her side. I'm convinced that Miwa will be one of the big movers and shakers on Meeden when the away ship goes on their mission, and Kitora (at least) will be a PR squad rep for Border's "first" away mjssion.

Failed the border application just break & entry into the military base, sticking his neck out and getting beaten up, the whole Yuma thing which is several counts of high treason, Chika swap with his life being used just as a distraction, "surely I can make Nasu run out of trion" big shot act, getting instantly erased into "Jin babydarling come to papa, pwettty pweeese", "Oji will come for my ass for sure", "I will tell you when to shoot" doesn't.

He might do some trick, but I also think he will just put an emphasis on faster decisions.

The biggest difference between A-ranks and B-ranks are just that the A-ranks are fast. We see this in how they take the initiative, get the better position and how the B-rankers are plain lagging behind in their decision. The A-rankers plan is pretty simple honestly. Just blitz the B-rankers position, put them on the back foot and make their cohesion break down (Kodera is honestly playing into it).

Osamu just need to push the tempo on the B-rankers and take back initiative.

It's Tachikawa and Kazama. TACHIKAWA the damn genius who can cut two super big trion soldiers in an instant and Kazama who is the smallest powerful motherfucker. Tachikawa, Kazama and Konami together managed to defeat a very powerful duo, one of them being at least as strong as Border's strongest.
Yuba winning would be weird here, but I hope he does something cool that can cripple this assault.

Bit more blogposting (truly sorry, but binging all of WT made me really want to talk about it).
>New faves
On a reread I really appreciate the subtle and not so subtle focus on characters' strengths outside of combat, and the away test is mainly an excuse for Cat to indulge in it. The star of the show, of course, is Suwa, who's a so-so combatant (if cool) but a social butterfly and an actually incredible leader. Him featuring relatively prominently in the invasion seemed a bit odd for a mid-B jobber, but the test cemented him as goated. Speaking of Ashihara indulging, three straight chapters about Rokuro are a bit eyebrow raising, but the thorough yet constructive dressing-down was quite interesting writing, especially the contrast with Osamu. And it's even more obvious on a reread what a GOAT Azuma is, he's not as flashy as the attacker or shooter aces but every damn fight he's in (or conflict of any kind) shows that he's smurfing like a motherfucker. Being the mentor to half of A-rank doesn't hurt.
>Meta
A lot has been said about Scorpion OP but I like how it's consistently shown to be weaker in head-on clashes than Kogetsu. Also more characters need to use Raygust, Murakami shows how useful it can really be. I think it might be a fave of Ashihara's, because while I would say the actual close combat choreography is competent but not spectacular, every fight Murakami is in shows off the best of it, with his sword and board style lending itself to excellent exchanges. I know the black haired Katagiri squad attacker uses double Raygust like Reiji, hope he gets to show off. And I wonder why Kageura doesn't use Grasshopper? His Mantis grapple was cool but seeing as he's a 99ATK 2DEF blender, it seems he could use the mobility.

Somebody has to die first on each side. And I don't think any of these four >>285784232 are the one that just went down at the museum. But I do agree it feels too obvious for it to be Kai or Koala, like they're there specifically to make us think it's one of them.
Maybe one of the ranged B ranks got ninja'd while trying to retreat? Or an operator? Would Hana receiving the dubious honor of dying first make Katori fly into a rage? Would that be helpful?

>>285797267
Raygust is the thinking mans scorpion, if you think about it. On paper, its straight worse than both Kogetsu and Scorpion, as a weird hybrid between the two. You dont have the durability of Kogetsu or the free molding of scorpion. However, this is a logical fallacy. Sure, you cant be as free with it as scorpion, but you CAN mold it to your own style as a pure swordsman instead of a hybrid martial artist most scorpion users tend to be. Theres a lot of theoterical novel uses for it but most people who can think of them pick scorpion, like Kuga did.

Scorpion and kogetsu are like the shooter vs gunner problem
If you're exceptionally creative and quick witted, such as Yuma, then it looks incredibly OP. But kogetsu is also longer, more durable, probably easier to train for. I doubt a scorpion could've blocked that sniper shot from this chapter. If you're not a feral monkey, a future reader, or a stealth unit, then you'd probably have to consider whether it's worth using. He's done a good job of making them both seem like legitimate choices
But fuck them both bro double raygust chads are finally coming into play

Losing to Nino gave Yuba a permanent mark in these threads, at this point he has to make Tachikawa bail out to clear his name
>>
>>285798980
I think it is all about the circumstances. Nobody shat on Kazama for losing vs. Jin or vs. Enedora because of their level and presence. Yuba losing 1v3 against Nino and his teammates while maiming them or causing other major damage to them would have been better for his image but unfortunately T-2 had to win.

This time around though he can shine. I think a good victory for him would be either against any relevant attacker or vs. Satomi in a shoot-off.
>>
>>285799077
I don't think that Yuba jobbed for losing against Ninomiya. Ninomiya had the range advantage.
>>
>>285799127
I don't think so either, but some anons see it that way. Ashihara was circling back on what Satomi said, emphasizing the differences between a long-ranged shooter and a short-ranged gunner. Btw he's someone to watch out for in this fight, he's basically a gunner version of Nino with Yuba's characteristics, and he has good mobility on top of that.
>>
>>285798765
>He's done a good job of making them both seem like legitimate choices
He's also done a good job of having them work in a way that reflects the sort of people that use them.
Scorpion was designed by a troll and one of the best attackers in border for the express purpose of one upping his rival. And so, appropriately, its fragility and malleability give it a high skill floor for basic competence and a skill ceiling limited mostly by the user's creativity.
Kogetsu was the first and standard attacker trigger that's supposed to be simultaneously easy to use for scrubs and worth using by masters. This is mostly accomplished through senku. It's offensive power and good range for a melee attack allow even noobs to present a threat. And the ability to enhance its power through both accuracy and draw time creates a steady ramp from beginner to fight autist that can be climbed by anyone through diligent training.
Mechanically, Raygust seems like it has a lot of potential. But so far all we've seen is a bit of what it can do with thruster. The most we've seen of its blade transforming abilities was by Yuma in its very first appearance. Hopefully seeing more people use it as a weapon will change that.
>>
>>285798600
Yeah. His soldiers will prove instrumental.
>>
>>285797665
>Interesting. I like how escudo was 'out of meta' for a while but has been coming back in since hyuse's first fight.
Being able to fuck with the map is always a very powerful ability, especially when constructs are strong enough to tank Ibis shots like Taichi showed in that same fight by defending agaisnt Ema. I like the implication that everyone was using it for defense but the static barrier and high trion cost meant it dropped off, but Jin mindbreaking Hyuse by using it as a tactical option really activated everyone's almonds on how to be creative with it.

It's funny how well it suits Yuiga given that he had two open option triggers. It's another layer of defense to protect him as a gunner, 5 trion allows him a decent number of uses, and it'll stick around even after he dies. Mikumo's rival has his own spider utility tool that few in A-rank are likely to copy since most of them have pretty full trigger loadouts.

>>
>>285798765
A scorpion user benefits from some other mean of defending: being fast like Yuma, using chameleon, having a defensive side effect like Jin and Kage, using teleporter.
If you aren't using any of those methods, kogetsu or raygust are better choices.
>>
>>285800416
It could also be used to mess with the timing of your swings. And raygust already theoretically comes with built in genyo. It should have the potential to be super tricky.
>>

>>
Isn't Kuga's blade throw useless against opponent who doesn't know that scorpion disappears when out of hand?
>>
>>285800955
Scorpion + Raygust would be cool and I'm sad we'll never see it.
>>285801709
What do you mean? Scorpion doesn't disappear when out of hand, it just can't be manipulated anymore. And Yuma isn't the only one who throws them.
If you mean the mole claw/mantis variant, it is strengthened by subverting assumptions about how scorpion is supposed to work. So an opponent that is unfamiliar with scorpion and is sufficiently cautious about its capabilities might have a better chance of seeing through it than a confidently ignorant border agent. But I think most people would correctly conclude how scorpion is likely to work while fighting against it and then be vulnerable to the trick.
>>
>>285801709
Kuga doesn't need every one of his tricks to be useful all of the time, he's incredibly proficient at switching up tactics as needed. Shurikens give him a ranged option without adding another trigger, letting him keep the pressure on his opponent while closing in or backing off. Sure, it's no Senkuu or Asteroid, but Shuriken and Mantis give him range unmatched by any known Scorpion use besides maybe Kage.

Actually, all high tier attackers are really good at keeping the fight in their range. Shinoda and Tachikawa are mobile enough to stay in at least Senkuu range, Kazama is a master of stealth, Kageura is nearly untouchable from a distance, Ko's Raygust lets him Thruster charge or toss, and Konami bombs the opponent with Meteor to leave them open for a large Sogetsu strike. I wonder if Kuga's winrate against Ko and Kage will improve a bit after incorporating Shurikens.
>>
>>285800976
The way Mikumo used the shield to trap Kazama was a great idea for raygust trickery. I'm pretty sure I remember someone using it to hook an opponent's weapon or leg, too. Mastering the shield shaping is really the key to mastering raygust, I think.
>>
>>285802788
Dueling shields, while impractical in real life, could be used more often. The shield is transparent too so your vision is obstructed as well. Your main form of attack are shield bashes and you could off hand a gun for a quick finisher or to harass from long distance.
Though I feel like its too optimized for 1 v 1 humanoid dueling and not for fighting trions soldiers.

I imagine it's because
>the manga is very popular and sells well, so they want to do something with it
>they don't have enough new material to adapt for a new season (phase 1 of the test probably isn't engaging enough to fill a whole season)
They could do an anime original movie or something, but that would need a lot of input from the mangaka and effort to create a new story. Instead, they decided to keep the inertia of the television series going by remaking the older, lower budget first season, which is really needed to establish characters and story beats but is harder to watch nowadays and less engaging.

The rabbit thing was clever. But this moment was an even clearer demonstration of just how out of their depth the B ranks are.
>I'm surprised Osamu is being put up to task this fast
I think Kodera pulling in Osamu this early is one of his only solid moves so far, and I have a lower than average tolerance for Osamuwank. If you know you're being read like a book and you know that that book says "he takes no risks" then the best way to deal with that is to start delegating things to a crazy person.
>>
>>285817748
I like how everyone here, regardless of their opinoin of Osamu we all agree that he is insane.

Did anything happen in the closed test to make Kodera think of asking Mikumo? I mean, sure, it makes sense, but if Arashiyama could read Kodera until now, he could also be able to read Kodera asking Mikumo's opinion, unless he thinks thats out of character and didn't think of that. So either Arashiyama fucked up by not thinking of the obvious play, or something made Kodera consider Mikumo

Probably this exchange.
>>
>>285819665
Arashiyama's assumptions about Kodera are based on what his comfort zone is and his unwillingness to leave it. Turning to Osamu could be seen as a way for Kodera to cheat himself out of that mental box. He's reluctant to take big risks himself. But Osamu gets results, so it would be easy for Kodera to tell himself that deferring to his judgement isn't that risky. Even if the actual plan is insane.
It remains to be seen if Arashiyama has predicted this possibility. Arashiyama himself has a high opinion of Osamu, so I doubt he has completely neglected to factor him into his plans.
>>
>>285819665
bruh it is on the page, Kodera learned from Kitora's comments on his wimpy nature if he can't do it himself he could and should just ask someone with a pair to do it for him, he learned. Arashiyama is for sure pondering the possibility of Mikumo being the one in charge
>defense
>attack
>or maybe...
the "maybe" is whatever Mikumo would be cooking because odds of Mikumo being the one in charge were reasonably high. More so Arashiyama is Jin's BFF so of all people he is the one who fully understands the implications of nigh unlimited Jin support and the competences that come with it. As for why Kodera decided to pick Mikumo, that one bit during the test with him explaining profound tactical axiom of MORE SHIT > LESS SHIT, overall performance of Suwa's 7 in the tactical simulations and the fact that Mikumo immediately spoke out and proposed them all to gather up first and abandon terminals while providing a fast explanation on how and why. Kodera would naturally gather up units without his input, but the "fuck terminals" part would most likely escape him. Kodera is pretty smart so this would be more than enough to pick Mikumo as his adviser.
>>
>>285788850
>>285789328
>>285819665
>>285819973
Another important advantage for Arashiyama here, is that his weakness lies in his love for his family and for Mikado citizens, which in a real setting can throw him off, as he'd get too emotional trying to save them. However, here he knows everything is a simulation, and he does not need to be concerned about his teammates. Idk what Mikumo could come up with to break his strategies.
>>
>>285820661
The most slapdash solution would probably be sending Kitora after him. Even if he knows its a sim, there is a chance of a slip second of hesitation being the difference between "life" and "death" in this scenario. The only other thing i can think of right now is just.....acting like Kodera until its too late for him to realise he's walked his forces into a trap.
>>

In addition to everyone else's points, keep in mind that Kodera was in the stands during WE WIN. Remember how it was built up that the standard approach to Ninomiya was to avoid him, trying to take him on was seen as reckless and foolhardy. Trying to have Kuga take out Nino was viewed as desperate, and Hyuse's hidden viper was considered Tamakoma's ace in the hole. Literally NO ONE was expecting T-2's plan to be confronting Nino head on, let alone A TRIONLET ENGAGING THE TRION MONSTER HEAD-ON being (one of many) plans in play to earn that victory.

WE WIN truly was Border at large's first glimpse into Mikumo's unhinged madness.

I don't think there is a way to hard counter someone like Arashiyama. He's got just the right mix of being too by the books to catch him on a huge gamble/blunder while being too devious to ever trust that you aren't being tricked or that he won't see through your tricks. The best bet would be to make the most of any knowledge gaps to set up traps without ever betting the farm on any one of them in case he sniffs them out. The fact that Arashiyama has no way of knowing what the custom trion soldiers are capable of is the biggest advantage in this.

Honestly, this tactic is pure cancer.
>>
>>285822237
Don't forget Toma lurking nearby. Honestly this fight is so fucking stacked it's insane.
>>
>>285822474
I was about to say that Toma is not in this battle, but then I remembered he is the best at hiding while having insane range so it's actually possible for Toma to be hiding nearby.
On the other hand, sending Toma here too is a bit overkill. A-ranks just teleported Tachikawa, Kazama, Canadian Prime and Raizo while having Izumi nearby to add midrange support, sending Toma too seems too wasteful.
>>
>>285822649
Toma has two ways if he deems this fight unworthy of his time: Support the pincer a little to the north, or go help Arashiyama which is also a really good choice. Between him, Momozono and Uno there are three highly skilled snipers freely floating around. I don't count Narasaka because he's with Miwa I guess so he's supporting T-1 too.
>>
>>285822474
Thats why I think Osamu play will be about making a big sacrifice to get something out of it. Any standard play could easily turn into a 0 kill loss, so might as well get something out of it. Like, gang EVERYONE on tachikawa and literally totally ignore everyone else or something

We need a proper sniper duel and now is the time. There's so many good candidates for it too.
>>285823180
>gang EVERYONE on tachikawa
The value of sniper focus fire is tilted way in B side's favor. Exposing Ema, Tonooka, and Hokari's positions to take out a Kazama or a Kako is way better value than exposing Toma and Narasaka to take out an Ikoma or Yuba. And that's without even considering the help from the artillery.

>Something about Kodera really pisses me off for some reason
He's Osamu without the qualities that make him endearing. Kodera is more akin to our (Western) concept of a shy nerd, he doesn't have a higher motive as of now other than becoming a captain and forming his own squad, so we as the audience don't really root for him, and his role is just taking the second shot after Narasaka in case he fails, probably covering Yoneya if Miwa's being covered by his fellow sniper.

I don't hate him per se, but he hasn't going much for him other than being disciplined and studying a lot. He has decent Trion and reached A-rank so no weak underdog backstory, but seems like Narasaka is proud of his taking the initiative.
>>
>>285784260

>What's the significance here?
Futaba does use an as of yet unexplained trigger called mako. So maybe that's what the emphasis on her kogetsu is about?
>>
>>285784603
What would (You) have done here?

For me, I would've assemble a small strike team with bagworm to infiltrate enemy territory to search for and ambush the enemy's commander. He should be somewhere in the back and if you just ignore the terminal, the A-rank wouldn't be able to tell right away. Meanwhile, the rest of B-rank needs to prioritize grouping up and moving away from the pincer, terminal be damned. If the A rank insist on pushing, you lure them in and surround them. The goal here is to wait until your strike team engage the enemy's commander and immediately counter attack with the b ranks once central command is too busy to relay orders.
>But how do you find Arashiyama
A mobile commander isn't a thing (unless you're a foresight wizard) so it'll be the dots that are standing still, which would be him, his operator and maybe 1-2 guards. In the worst case that he's in a big group you can still keep command busy with Chika bombardment, giving b ranks a huge advantage in their battle on the otherside.
>What about the terminal
They're just attention bait. What really matter is to thin out the agents first.
>>
>>285827704
Good points, but Arashiyama's insurance are Katagiri and maybe Kusakabe squads, so you got three full squads around the head honcho. I would do some cheese fuckery using decoys because Urushima and Azuma have it so maybe like overwhelm their radars. That way Bagworm is no longer limited because everyone knows they can only move across the bridges which hinders its usefulness, and they've got a Spotter whose abilities we don't know yet but it seems the role was devised to counter bagworm and maybe chameleon fuckery.
>>
>>285827704
Send Utagawa and Oji squads over the river to the the clump of enemies in the north that you can reasonably deduce are Arashiyama and Kusakabe squads who are the prime candidates for commander. Their mission is to at least kill the operators. If they can pull that off and still have some strength, then have them move southwest attacking terminals along the way to force the A ranks to send someone to try and catch them.
Retreat the main force near the museum towards the southern bridge. The aim is to drag the pursuing A ranks behind them to the east so that the reinforcing Murakami, Wakamura, and Kodera squads can attack them from behind. And also cross the bridge if possible. This is to force the A ranks to either slog through the B ranks' ranged superiority at a chokepoint to get back to their side and defend their terminals or turn their backs on said ranged superiority and push through the three pursuing squads to start a terminal race.
>>
>>285799077
He DID at least maim Inukai
>>
Alright anons, who is Osamu/Kodera going to use Urushima to assassinate? Sending him to kill the A-Rank president Arashiyama seems a bit too obvious, I figure he'll be the surprise card that lets them eliminate an A-Rank VIP either in the middle or the end of the battle phase.
>>
>>285827704
I wouldn't be in this position in the first place. The only team that matters is Nino's team, as long as they have the position and defenses necessary to unload their trion without reservations I have a chance to win. Hence the strategy is to form defensive fodder belt around them and then strike at a-ranks, eliminating team after team or in this case just annihilating their assault group wholesale. Everyone has a plan until they get evaporated by 38 trion ibis.
>>
>>285828344
>use Urushima to assassinate
not quite.
Utagawa, Urushima & Kuga are the sabotage and assassination group. Wouldn't be surprised if Kuga has equipped chameleon in his last slot just to be on the same wave as his allies. As for who to kill the answer is actually obvious - every single laptop dies, ignore all other targets.

>>
>>285813710

>>
People seem to be thinking of pure PVP forgetting that the Provisional side has their custom trion soldiers while A side has known trion soldiers and they know now that some rabits(half an A squad's allotment each) are deployed but not in the combat zone(since they were used as launchpads).
>>
>>285821448
Chika has the weirdest position in that her best use would be to go all out now, bail out, then somehow make it to the respawn at home stretch and go for a 2nd doom wave.
Worst position is being reserved, killed before unloading then not making it to respawn.
>>
>>285828135
>>285828737
You two are right, it may seem like Tachikawa, Jin, etc. are the most valuable kills, but it's actually all about the operators.
B-rank squads with communication actually have an advantage over A-rank with no communication.

I would not have given up tempo for starters. Send in a counterattack so the A-rankers can't comfortably amass their forces (a counterattack of unknown strenght forces them to hold a disproportionate reserve) and to gum up their decision chain. As for the breaches in the defensive lines, send in enough guys to just slow down the offense and then use Chika to artillery barrage their shit down. The B-rankers main advantage is that they got three "artillery" type agents. It doesn't matter how good the A-rankers are at melee if I just saturate the entire area.
>>

>>
>>285830915
Pretty much. The usual order of sniper targets starts with the radio guy followed by officers, then anyone who seems to be in charge. Take out their ability to coordinate or call for help, then take out anyone organizing them. Disorganized individuals are a lot easier to pick off or route around than organized squads coordinating with each other. So operators and Arashiyama would be the priorities.
>>
>>285830915
Yup, you are right.
Not even Tachikawa can survive a full onslaught of surprise coordinated attacks so taking care of the operators is the right move.

it is not "crazy battle IQ" Mikumo isn't an amazing tactical genius, quite a few people even in b-rank have him beat, the thing that clearly differs him from Kodera and anyone else really is the fact that Mikumo is batshit insane gambling addict. Mikumo's safest turtle strat will have more edge to it than Kodera's all in with his life on the line. Which is why picking him to counteract Kodera's way of thinking is a great move.
>>
>>285838224
Most of them can't kill a rabbit 1v1. And everything the B ranks are using has the potential to catch the A ranks by surprise. The trion soldiers are definitely going to play a major role.

wrong, this is like saying a spear fisher can hunt grouper just as well as he hunts parrotfish. This is exactly their field of expertise. Rabbits where slaughtered wholesale by a-ranks on their first deployment.

>batshit insane gambling addict.
Well, it's crazy battle IQ, a very crazy battle IQ.
I still laugh whenever I remember his final tactic to save Chika. Shooting a few Asteroids to make face cubes (betting that he doesn't get counterattacked), replace Chika with that cube (betting that the switcheroo is not figured out), using himself as bait and TRIGGER OFF just to make the bait more believable.
This crazy fucker risked his life to make his bait more believable.
