I loved sora no woto but there's an entire episode of a character needing to piss where nothing else happens. The pacing is godawful and they shoved in an entire second season's worth of plot beats into an episode and a half right at the end.

I've just finished Haibane for the first time recently and I know that it's probably extremely cliche to say this but I saw a lot of myself in Reki(I've rewatched the last episode like 5 times). Huge thanks for the anon that convince me to watch it! I've also checked one of the doujinshi and this page here says there was supposed to be a dog in the anime. Did I miss it or has ABe decided to not include it in the show?

Regardless on how you feel regarding either of them both are worth seeking out and watching. Haibene has this art style and atmosphere you don't see very often. Such a good looking show. Sora no Woto does have a more complete story sure but the art style does not hold up compared to something like Haibane Renmei.

My understanding is that it's deliberately very metaphorical/ambiguous, to the point that when the director was asked pointed questions about it in interviews he essentially said that it was unclear on purpose, annoyed that western audiences kept wanting hard answers rather than being able to go off of tone and emotion.

One of the best shows ever made and I've been into the hobby for 30 years.
