The ridiculous traps are the redeeming quality of the anime for me, they're so whimsical.

Anime director otherwise seemed to be preaching his ideals by playing up the horror and depression.

You're missing out if the anime dissuades you from reading the manga or LNs. Lots of creative death games and Yuki is way more fun.
