For women its important to find something they actually enjoy doing. Very rarely will they find reward in the "grind". Most girls/women I've known that's been in shape has been so because of soccer / martial arts / swimming / skiing etc.

To lose weight, you have to change your diet to restrict insulin production and encourage glucagon. These are hormones that control weight gain and loss respectively.
It's as much about timing as it is about quantities.
