pretty sure dogs cats and even rats have done this, just not in a controlled laboratory. both my dog and my cat could do this with treats (but only my big dogs could consistently prefer a larger treat to a smaller one and act peeved over a treat being broken in half)

your dog might be stupid. mine will tolerate it but act more stubborn if they only get a half treat and always picks bigger treats over smaller ones.
can your dog do the statistical reasoning test? use kibble and cheese.

What can a giraffe actually do though? If you hug its hind legs it can't reach you with its hooves, and its too sluggish to get away while you repeatedly bite it from behind. If you stand to the side of its hind legs then it won't even be able to hit you with a back kick. If it raises its leg to perform a stomp then all you have to do is back off until it finishes its slam, then move back in to continue chomping.

It's been settled. There are four species of Giraffe in this world.
Many others are subspecies, some coat patterns just mean another eco-species (like G. giraffa rothschildii) and then there's the Okapi.

You underestimate how big the world is. Even an hour walk from where I live at has enough greenery to feed a lot of herbivores. Granted, a savanna is way less dense but even in the background you can see a bunch of trees, more than enough for that herd to eat.

>A 2019 genome study (cladogram below) finds that Giraffidae are a sister taxon to Antilocapridae, with an estimated split of over 20 million years ago.
I'm losing my fucking mind.
I'm tempted to believe Africa and North America must have been connected (relatively) more recently, if only briefly, but then it wouldn't explain the seeming arbitrary nature of the roster of animals exchanged. Elephants, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, lions, all made the exchange, but then only one group of monkeys made it over and our porcupines are convergent and not even related to one another.

When I first saw an American porcupine, I was surprised it… didn't look like a porcupine. Like… at all. We have two types in Italy, porcospino (literally spiny pig because their snouts are pig-like but they have spines; cognate with porcupine) and istrice, the African one. Istrice look like very large guinea pigs with a mane of quills. I posted a video in a webm thread some time back of one wandering around a supermarket carpark.

Giraffes lick and suck on poles, bones, and other objects primarily to get essential minerals like salt and sodium, which they often lack in their leafy diet, and to help neutralize toxins in acacia leaves they eat. This behavior, called osteophagy (bone-eating) or simply mineral-seeking, stimulates saliva and digestion, helping them process food and maintain health, acting like a natural vitamin supplement or boredom relief in captivity.
