like damn, why the fuck not? we need to increase sea turtle population because they eat jellyfish. what's the harm in that?

I don't disagree with this unless your job is a nature documentary film maker as by the very definition of your work you are meant to observe nature as it unfolds
>>
>>5022879
Sea turtle populations can be recovered almost immediately. Literally within like a year to a decade because they produce so many offspring and you can actually choose which sex they mature into. They're very easy to care for too. And the claims of them not being able to find their spawning grounds is fucking bullshit that's totally fabricated. But government agencies will actively prevent anyone from doing so, because all so-called environmental or animal protection agencies under the jurisdiction of the United States government work for lobbying groups and fishing companies, specifically shrimp trawlers HATE sea turtles, because they significantly impacts their profits.
>>
>>5022881
That's also bullshit. Humans have so significantly impacted every single animal on this planet that there is no "just observing". If you're not helping, you're actively harming at this point. And you'll notice, all these faggots that always claim you should only observe, only believe this when an animal is being harmed or killed. Nobody ever says that anyone should interfere to help animals, if their actions are directly harming them or their ecosystems, in which case you're not a neutral party anyway - you're already causing damage. The net result of this, of course, is the total destruction of Nature and animals. Corporations actively want animal extinctions because endangered species severely hurt their profits.

they've been building luck for generations, this would allow a couple turtles with slightly lower luck than the average, which is still very high for them.
also being born into the group humans decide to help is a pretty lucky feat

They will have entire agencies funded with thousands of taxpayer dollars and dozens of staff when really all it takes is just one determined autist who doesn't give a shit about laws.
Here in Britain they found a few populations of our endangered sand lizards that were "unoficially introduced" to beaches and heathlands. At first they were freaking out until they conceded that it's good we have another population of them BUT DON'T HECKING DO IT AGAIN.

We have built gigantic cities over fields and valleys. We have made highways and factories and mines that have changed how the planet looks from space. We have domesticated cats dogs and made zoos where we keep animals captive their entire lives
But make sure no to touch a baby animal. That would be bad.
>>
>>
>>5022879
It's a general rule because the average schmuck isn't educated enough to determine what actions are ecologically good or bad (even scientists fuck this up) and will always default to "protecting" the "cuter" or "weaker" animal. But predators are often ecologically far more important than their prey, at least on an individual level.
I remember seeing a video of some weasel attacking a rabbit on social media and some retarded cunt started kicking the weasel to make it let go. The vast majority of people were congratulating that behavior and declaring they'd do the same.
>>
>>5022997
>Humans have destroyed huge amounts of the world's natural ecology so it's fine to be disruptive on a smaller scale because your fee fees are getting hurt that predators are predating / can't control your base impulses
Perfect example of shopping cart theory
>>
>>5023000
It is fine to be disruptive. Nature is not sacred. It was not created by yahweh. It is not home to ancient spirits. It's just carbon. We are not magical gardeners tasked with being a planetary groundskeeper.
We can shape the world however we want as long as the end result works out in our favor. Every single other animal in existence does the same. Even ants do. If raising the turtle survival rate improves the world, why not do it? The turtle death rate was maintained by evolution because turtles had less pressure on them and the current death rate was in line with their old survival rate. Therefore their death rate must be lowered.
>>
There are plenty of turtle sanctuaries where the babies are protected from predators while they make their way to sea, I've been to one myself. The no interference clause applies to retarded shit like >>5022999, where braindead assholes will see a deer or a penguin or a seal (any "cute" herbivore/prey animal really) be predated on and start crying and whining about how they would've stopped the mean ol'predator from eating it, or do shit like stomping out a snake eating a fucking squirrel.
I get the argument for helping sea turtles out, but you severely underestimate just how stupid the average person is when it comes to ANYTHING ecology related.

saving baby turtles from gulls indicates that you think that too many baby turtles are being eaten by gulls
can you specify the exact amount of baby turtles that should be eaten by gulls and how many we need to save to reach that goal?
the answer is that you have no fucking idea and if you say "all of them" then you're fucking retarded. let the gulls have their meal - seabirds have been eating turtle hatchlings for far longer than humans have been around and they haven't gone extinct. it's why they lay a bunch of eggs.
so funny to see humans anthropomorphize animal offspring and project their own misplaced care instincts onto them and then call it noble behavior

The interfering with nature thing seems dated to me, no matter what all species have been impacted by human settlement and its highly likely the conditions they evolved around will simply not exist in the next 100-200 years.

Why are you even on this board? Your view of nature is psychopathic.
Humans are different from other animals. We are high functioning beings with empathy, and with that comes a responsibility to preserve the space around us. We are the guardians of this earth and it's our duty to balance human technological growth while respecting nature.
>but ants don't do that!
Ants don't have sophisticated brains. Hurting something out of instinct is one thing, but it's entirely different if your able to process what hurt is.

Untamed nature worship is degenerate and deranged. Nature is not a being. It is not a mind. It is not a soul. We should change the world for the better.
Wolf eradication was a good thing and we should do grizzlies and pumas next.
Coyote eradication is possible and the ecosystem would be fine if we bolstered bobcat populations at the same time
We should exterminate disease transmitting mosquitoes.
We should prop up species we like when they aren’t doing well, which is usually mostly because of india and china’s unrestrained economy with only minor contributions from everyone else
We should replace fields and deserts with forests.
Absolutely. Nature isnt a temple. It’s a place. And man evolved to remodel.
Chances are you wouldnt give a fuck just like you dont care when you walk through the woods without getting chased by coyotes and wolves.
>>
>>
>>5023878
Species-wide narcissism is a prerequisite for continued existence.
People who worship an untouched natural world inevitably do poorly until getting conquered by people who do not. It's evolutionarily unfit ideology. If you took your views seriously with like minded people you would degenerate into a jeet-tier "society" and then get conquered or bought out.
It is actually perfectly ok to do things like kill off wolves and help desirable species maintain their levels despite anthropogenic disruption.

Self interested environmentalism is probably the only reason we haven't been conquered by mao 2.0 (emperor xi) lmao.
You can have the west doing some things for nature but ultimately the wests benefit, or china steamrolls the west due to its lack of economic output (which necessarily changes or destroys nature - pick one, not neither). Or, zero environmentalism, which changes the west into china - poor long term prospects and a real average IQ of 85 from toxic load.
Absolute environmentalism (ie: vegan bullshit) cripples economies, it even cripples human capability from not eating enough meat. Zero environmentalism achieves the same crippling, eventually. A fact of human existence is if you exist in the environment you will change it. Our duty isn't to preserve it exactly as it was found (it would change anyways)... our duty is to keep it in good shape for our own good, and sometimes even improve it. Because if we don't, we die anyways.

>sea turtles evolve necessary changes to not die too often, so a sustainable number of turtles survive to continue the next generation

>more sea turtles are now dying than ever before
>the surviving population is eventually going to reach a number too small to sustain further generations
>but wait, there's hope

>only real downside is some pest sea birds will die back a little. as if there aren't too many of the fuckers eating out of garbage bins already.

People are far more willing to conserve a natural world that isn't hostile towards their interests. At least shaping nature means preserving some. The other options are a: no civilization at all (start with yourself, petafag) or b: completely eradicating all of it indiscriminately instead of wasting any more time or lowering efficiency putting up with its inconveniences (aka what the chinese and international elite do). I'd take a modified ecosystem with an annoying/dangerous predator or pest-like prey animal gracefully cut out over a paved over globohomo wasteland any day.

Listen retard. Extirpating wolves did, in fact, cause herbivores to overpopulate. And they did, in fact, cause forests to partially collapse. The scale of human activity was never great enough compared to what deer can do to millions of acres of forest. All of the predators in an ecosystem are NATURAL, AND NECESSARY to maintain the current state of the ecosystem.
And in those last 5 words are why it didn't matter. Removing wolves objectively changed the state of the ecosystem. But it did not cause it to collapse. It replaced it with another type of ecosystem and animal populations left, arrived, grew, and shrank to fit the new state caused by overpopulated deer and elk. It was totally fine for us, and it was totally fine for life in general. I suppose that in the end, the same amount of animals lived and died over the same after the ecosystem adjusted to wolf removal. Adding wolves back was in fact restoring the ecosystem to its original state, but the human modification didn't turn the ecosystem into a wasteland. It turned a few woods into something closer to grassland.
It is totally fine to shape an ecosystem as we see fit. Do you want to live around wolves? No. Not even the wolves (dogs) want to live around wolves. And then there's you, making it all about some weird fucking conspiracy theory because you don't eat enough meat for your brain to function for something. Fuck off, vegan schizo/cat schizo/whatever the fuck you are, "the retard that always posts this drivel".
>>
>>5033424
Wolf eradication factually changed the ecosystemWolves were 100% necessary to maintaining its original state. And that original state did look very cool, and have nicer weather.
But it didn't matter. Fuck living around wolves. They are to dogs what abbos are to us.

Don't feel like replying to anybody in particular, but in my opinion turtles are more valuable than some shit gull. Turtles take years to reach sexual maturity and reproduce. Schizophrenic people do tend to spout immaterial threats. I know. A hobo once started screaming about how "they" were going to gut me alive when I told him to get a job. Humans and their greed ARE the harm, dont lie to yourself saying its only some human behaviors or its due to ignorance. Human greed and their self-importance are the cause, and those traits aren't going away any time soon. More often than not when someone says 'save the planet' they really mean save humans and their ability to live comfortably on the planet. Objectively speaking, Humans are an oil fire, best way to deal with it is to let it burn itself out, sure itll take a whole lot of life out in the process, but its better than letting humans 'fix' some of their mistakes long enough for them to do even more damage, potentially even getting to the point where theyre capable of wiping out life on earth entirely. "Helping" is harming in the long run.

Wild animals are not your pets. They can not be owned without a risk to the real populace. They can not be cared for once confiscated. All that can be done is euthanasia. The suffering of the moron is just a bonus.
Leave wild animals in the wild.
>>5040839
Wild animals are not pets. The wild caught pet trade has caused extinctions before and continues to do so. Deer keeping caused CWD. ALL keeping of native wild animals must be banned and the perpetrators punished.
We have lots of domesticated animals that are happier being pets than anything else, like cats. Get one of those if you want a cute furry animal to live in your house.

This. One of the most devasting things to nature is the housecat. They kill small birds and mammals left right and center with no restraint, despite not needing to eat them to survive. Yet suggest that people keep their cat indoors in areas where endangered birds live, and people throw an absolute bitchfit, because they can't accept that their lickle furbaby is in fact a highly effective predator that does not belong in the local ecosystem. You saw it last year where a conservation agency *suggested* banning domestic cats from free roaming in areas where endangered Scottish wildcats are known to live to prevent competition, and the papers went absolutely insane, presenting it as an evil authoritarian government banning owning cats outright in all of Scotland. Also, people letting their dogs run around off leash because they don't accept the fact that their dog is a predator and could kill wildlife.

What is it with Americans and claiming they need to hunt to keep the population of deer in balance? How did the deer population stay in balance before humans arrived in the Americas then? We killed their main predators because they are even worse pests than the deer. If you want to disagree live around them and try and engage in any agriculture/outdoor recreation. Wolves are horrid. The only people who want them back live in the middle of the city.
>but they're dogs!
Their behavior is closer to a pitbull on cocaine. Dogs don’t even descend from this wolf species. They are different animals, like norwegians and sudanese.
>>

We do. That's it. Unfortunately, midwestern/southern retards farm deer to stock their lands to make hunting more fun.

Millions of wolves.
>I get this in the UK where there are no longer any predators to keep deer in check
You mean the ones they killed?
>doesn't the US have wolves and bears? and if not in the area, why can't they reintroduce them?
We have a few to control elk.
The minimum number of wolves to control mid tier cervids like whitetail is also the minimum number of wolves needed to make them an active threat to human life. Wolves and humans are in the same niche and directly compete with each other. Cooperation and eradication are the only options, and dogs (paleolithic northeast asian wolves) are already our friends so

It's worth mentioning that horseshoe crabs evolved a very male-biased sex ratio, and it's not uncommon to see up to a dozen males scrambling over each others to mate with a single female.
So saving male crabs is essentially worthless, there's a huge oversurplus of them and any available female will get fertilized either way.

>Amazing how it's only "interfering with Nature" when you're helping
No, it's interference when you think you're helping but you're actually hurting, by doing dumb shit like feeding wild animals and making them into pets. If the sea turtle population needs supported leave it to the wildlife biologists to decide that it does and how to support it. Some of those turtles are actually meant to die because they're genetically unfit from birth and picking ones to save requires careful observation.
>It's never "interference" when you're hurting
It is interference when you're hurting. That's why we have restrictions on hunting so people don't manage populations into oblivion and stay around the kill rate the ecosystem was meant to support, and if you fuck with the non-game birds you go to jail. That's also why you're not allowed to feed wild animals or make them your pets. Because it hurts nature.

That isn't luck, it's natural selection. Humans don't help out random animals. The turtle's traits are being selected: their cute appearance, behavior and their impressive size when matured give them an advantage over other animals in getting human's help. Repeat this process for millions of years and turtles will evolve traits that will be beneficial in attracting human's attention and care.
This will be the next step in evolution. Life will eventually learn to co-exist with humans in order to thrive, much like how plants evolve to live with insects, animals and plants will adapt to benefit from human activities

They do. Less than 1 in 1000 make it past their first year. Not sure what that has to do with what you're replying to. They don't die because they're bad at swimming, eating or shitting. They die because they're killed, which is easily prevented.

>Artificially inflate the sea turtle population to decrease the jellyfish population
>Sea turtles end up eating all the jellyfish
>Sea turtles have nothing to eat and starve
>Now no sea turtles or jellyfish
Way to go, fuck-o.

>Some of those turtles are actually meant to die because they're genetically unfit
If that's true then they will die just the same to oceanic predatory.
The beachrun newborn turtles need to engage in is not natural selection.
It is nature, but it is far too unforgiving and random to apply a coherent selection pressure.
Healthy turtles are just as likely to be eaten as maladaptive turtles, frontrunners are just as likely to be picked off as stragglers.
All this morbid spectacle serves to do is further bloat the population of obnoxious flying sea rats.

seagulls should be intentionally made extinct. alongside all other aves. I'm in favor of total dino death. we have no ancestral blood feud with chelonians but saurians oppressed our ancestors for millions of years. we were not shown mercy and should not show it in return.

I've learned to almost never interfere with nature, because I only make things worse. But I think I would make an exception by helping them, maybe not by throwing them directly into the water, but by watching over them and making sure no predators eat them.

Turtles don't need help to the ocean, they've been fine doing this for 200 million years. What you can do is stop throwing junk in the ocean and tell third worlders (especially chinks) to fuck off and stop eating everything that moves.

Why are Americans so insane?
“You touched the baby deer! Now I have to kill it!”
*BANG*
“This is a kindness!”
There was a story of a guy (a cop I think?) who drove like five hundred fucking miles just to shoot the pet goat of some girl because she refused to butcher it for some stupid contest.

idgaf. I'm an animal, I chose what I do. Bird tries to steal my food? swatted, broke your wing? should not have gone for my food. See a critter in distress? Help it if I can. Ornery Goose? punted, fox chasing a bunny? scared off. Only ones who will care are people I despise, it's a win win. Nature goes not give a shit.

You shouldn't move them or carry them to the water because the weird traumatic Normandy Beach sequence they experience at birth is apparently a big part of how their brains remember the location of their ancestral breeding grounds. I guess trauma is a good way of making sure it imprints on them. You can carve little sand paths for them and stand to the side to keep seagulls and crabs scared away but you cannot touch them or stand in their path or over them.

Just collect half the turtles, dice them up, make a good mince out of them. Feed the incoming birds and crabs the meat. While the predators are getting their fill, the rest of the turtles will make it to the water without fear.
This way you will be saving half of the turtles, sating the predators and making sure that the sacrificed turtles wouldn't suffer. Everybody wins.

Untamed science worship is even more degenerate and deranged.
This is the same problem that communism has. Nature, like an economy, is far too large, complex, and varied to be administrated by humans in any effective way.
You only have some idea of what some of the things your suggesting would do sometime in the future, maybe. You remind me of all the nutritionists over the last 40 years who absolutely insisted that eating dietary fat was bad for you and was the primary cause of the "Western Diseases"(Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer). Well several enormous, long-term, decade long studies were released in the last 5 years about that and guess what, ingestion of dietary fat in a person's meals has absolutely 0 correlation to an increase in any of the above diseases, and nutritionists have almost universally abandoned the hypothesis that eating fatty foods has negative impacts on your health.
Scientists do not know nearly enough about anything to attempt to artificially coerce nature into any direction, including one that is more beneficial to humans. It's been proven time and again that science is far more limited than people like you believe.

>scientists sometimes get things wrong therefore all science LE BAD!
tired of this rightoid talking point. the very fact that the narrative has changed is proof that the scientific method works. that's literally how it works: you come up with new hypotheses to test in light of new data.
if there was a still a cadre of nutritionists telling you not to eat fatty foods in current year despite all the new research, you'd still be crying just as much

Studies that deal with ecology and animals are infamous for being severely underfunded. It's an open secret that you only get funding if you say what whoever is funding you wants to hear.
Now you have studies saying that ackhually wolves are le bad and the yellowstone experiment is wrong. But it's just a coincidence that this study came out just as wolves are once again a big controversy and congress is about to remove all their legal protections.
Same thing with studies that claim invasive species are the absolute worst thing in the world. I wonder why organizations and people whos entire purpose is exterminating plants and animals in an perpetual war want you to support them and give them more money.

>>scientists sometimes get things wrong therefore all science LE BAD!
Is this what I said? No, I said, and I quote, "Untamed science worship is even more degenerate and deranged."
The nutritionist example was a reference to the fact that science encompasses a much, much, much smaller area of understanding than is usually admitted to.
You can be flippant and say that it's just the scientific method at work while ignoring the fact that most scientists greatly enjoy the universal acclaim of their discipline as generally infallible, but why don't we look at another example of nutritionist that might clarify why it's more than a semantic issue.
When margarine was invented it was meant to replace butter, partially because butter was so fatty and fat definitely caused heart disease. So the vast majority of nutritionists and food scientists in America tripped over themselves extolling the virtue of margarine over butter in every capacity. Fast forward to the 90s/early 00s and it turns out that the process of creating margarine, which required extensively treating it with hydrogen to allow it to remain solid at room temperature, made it an order of magnitude more carcinogenic than butter.
There is a severe overcompensation of cultural trust in science that is taken advantage of by essentially all scientific disciplines, with not nearly enough attention given to the disclaimers that what scientists do know and are able to affect is only a very small portion of an overwhelmingly large area, and they are often unwilling or simply unable to predict the ramifications of the changes and activities they pursue in their small area up the chain of causality. Though I suppose to you, all those people who wholeheartedly believed in the scientific health consensus of the 70s, 80s, and early 90s and who developed and died of cancer due to an intense and prolonged switch to daily consumption of artificial, solidified trans fat are simply a rightoid talking point.
