Tiny visitor
>>
Hell yeah. They started the nest in February last year iirc?
>>
Bumb.
It is likely that last year's chicks are alive and travel together, as two young eagles were previously seen circling near the nest a couple of times and the pair were not usually angry towards the visitors.
>>
>>5092476
Neat, thanks for the reminder!
>>
>>5092482
the nest has been there for several years but i read something after i made the thread that said shadow and jackie started nest rebuilding late in the season last year due to unseasonably warm weather (thanks climate change!) which is why there's no eggs yet. it seems we may have to wait a little longer.

Ripperino pepperino both eggs gone. So what happen? At the moment the eggs have been left alone for almost 4 hours. One of the eggs collapse on its own. It was fine after parent left.

What happened to it? I saw the raven crack the other egg, but that one looked cracked first. I couldn't find the timestamp where it happened though.
>>
Fug, what a shitty season. I remember something about eagles starting a new clutch if they lose it too early but I don't know if that's possible now.
>>
lmao have these birds ever been successful? every year these webcams are posted here and they fail

2 healthy female chicks raised last season and based on sightings it's likely they survived their first year
>>

>>
>>5097528
The statistical odds of it go like this:
https://www.elfruler.com/?page_id=3218
>Of the 44 failed clutches, the adults at 12 laid second clutches, which is 27.3% of the failed first clutches, or only 3.1% of total clutches.
The page says the timing is important. If it's too late, they're not gonna try again.
These eggs were lost only a couple of days after they were laid. It looks like there should be time to retry. I guess we'll see.

Its just a matter of survival like how some bird mothers get rid of a chick. It's to maximize survival of the one that has the best chance instead of dividing the food and inadequately raising two chicks who may both die rather than one strong chick surviving.
>>
>>5114331
no but nasty behavior and always brooding about bad stuff is only done by ugly people. ugly thoughts manifest outward and create ugly people.
>>
>>5114341
Yeah but in bald eagles it's not obligatory. Last year the 2 chicks only had mild bonkings and both of them fledged.

Oh, nice! I was worried about the earlier screenshots that made it look like one of the eggs may have been cracked. Good to see the egg must've just had some dirt on it. Hope these guys will both make it.

>>5114409
They originally had three chicks last year. The biggest chick was very dominant and wouldn't stop beating up the other two. It looked like that chick was gonna take all the food and bully at least one of its siblings to death.
However, the biggest chick ended up dying during a snowstorm while the smaller two survived. The surviving chicks had a much more comfortable sibling dynamic together.

This has fascinated me. Eagles usually have no problem eating the carcasses of their offsprings. Was there something wrong with the chick that the parent didn't take the risk of eating it?

Zero-sum + potentially limited resources available to the parents. It's better to raise one strong child with a higher chance of survival, than dividing in case you can't get enough food for both, so both die.

What we see of any animal's life it is a still frame of an ever changing creature. Some bald eagle chicks kill their sibling. Sunny from last year basically avoided all fight and just wanted to chill. What ultimately benefits the species is what will become common behavior, and even that will change as lufe on earth moves on.
