Let's show some love to the majestic urban chicken. Or flying cats.

I enjoy observing and sometimes feeding these beautiful creatures. I enjoy listening to their cooing and all the kinds of birds sounds they make. I don't mind their poo, it's much better than all the human waste and trash on the streets. I just clean it off and that's it. It's us humans who took away their living space. No matter what you do, they' are always going to be part of cities.
Pigeons offer a rare interaction with nature in the grim lonely suffering of urban hellscape. Pigeons are naturally sociable, goofy and entertaining, but have an uncanny ability of navigating for example car traffic.

The health hazard pigeons pose is much overhyped, especially compared to pets, rodents and bugs. Yeah, dead birds are bad, but pigeons are not special in that regard. In fact, I've seen far more dead hedgehogs, moles and even sparrows than pigeons (they get picked up the same).
Some retards even go as far as being vehemently militant against any kind of bird feeding. I also hate the "protect the children" hysteria. Children and their immune system need exposure to the world and the chance of bird shit causing problems is infinitesimal, especially when compared to household dangers.

Recently a lot of places had introduced fines to discourage feeding birds, which sucks. Even if nobody enforces them, npcs love to get angry and judge people instead of leaving them be. COVID really showed how insufferable most humans are.

They've chosen the underside of one of our awnings as a roost/nesting spot so there's an almost literal mountain of shit up there I can't reach because my house has high ceilings so the awning is very high up.
I love pigeons but I'm not gonna pretend I don't also love the urban hawks that snatch them up from my property from time to time, even if I don't enjoy cleaning up pigeon carcasses.

It's all part of the circle of life. I might pity the gazelle, but I understand the lion has to eat too.

Humans though... I'm fine with the homeless catching and roasting pigeons, but I can't stand the inane hostility toward birds of all things.

>see mourning doves all my live around my house
>start working at a winery
>see what I think are mourning doves
>find out they're eastern doves, which like agricultural areas
Why do mourning doves like suburbs and eastern doves don't? I've never seen an eastern dove until now, and there's no mourning doves out here.

Might have something to do with their preferred habitat and social structure.
Some pigeons prefer rocky outcrops and by extension tall buildings, while others nest on trees and wooden structures.
Some form large flocks and require abundant food sources, while others are more solitary and can survive on more meagre rural areas.
Competition could also be a factor, but I haven't read much about it actually being.

PBS Nature recently had an insightful episode about city pigeons: https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/about-the-pigeon-hustle/33407/

The only good PBS is Space.
Defunding the monster was the right choice.

Some pigeons moved into my roof and my neighbors roof over the last year where before pigeons were never present in the greater area. They seem to cohabitate well with the mourning doves that have always been here. My town is near Boston which is where I assume the pigeons came from.

Ran over a pigeon the other day in a parking lot. It was pecking at a piece of bread. The grackles were smart enough to fly away but not the dumb fucking pigeon. God they're so fucking dumb.

I got to hold a mourning dove that got trapped in my chicken pen once.
So soft and cute, I love them so much.

Weird, because pigeons here are incredibly smart around cars. During red lights they descend upon the intersection, then fly away before the lights turn green. During low traffic scenarios they often just walk between lanes or sidestep out of the car's way.
In the latter case their insane confidence sometimes might turn out to be their doom when a car behaves unexpectedly, for example when evading a pothole or parking in an unusual way. I've never witnessed a roadkill personally, but I've seen a few dead pigeons that all seemed to be ran over in rarely used parts of the asphalt I wouldn't normally expect a tire to touch.

In my area it's a desert with farmland and cattle feedlots, so they basically have infinite food from the insects eating cow shit.

The birds are literally bored and fly in front of cars for fun, playing chicken. Once during a windy day with a tailwind, a bird was flying at least 50mph next to my truck in the same direction.

Every day when I drive to work a few will play chicken in front of my car going 55mph.

AFAIK pigeons are not big insect eaters and only resort to consuming proteins when struggling to find anything better. It's not sustainable for them, just like with eating bread.
Farmlands also mean large seasonal variation in food availability compared to cities. Combined with being a desert, I'm not sure their food is as abundant as you might think.

Ok, that sounds fun.

>Seeds and fruit form the major component of the diets of pigeons and doves, In addition to fruit and seeds, a number of other food items are taken by many species. Some, particularly the ground doves and quail-doves, eat a large number of prey items such as insects and worms. One species, the atoll fruit dove, is specialised in taking insect and reptile prey.
Your average pidgie is herbivorous.

I'll try to get video of them playing chicken or flying beside my car. Installed a new 2.5k dash cam.

I forgot to mention there are corn fields near the feed lots, so they probably eat both. Lots of pigeons swarming above feed lots, and sometimes 10+ hawks will form a cyclone above the feed lots (some lower some higher.) Almost took a feather I found but apparently it's super illegal.
