Conformation is not usually chosen just for looks it is chosen because that body shape or whatever is best for the breed's intended job. NOT ALL, but most conformation/breed standards are for this reason.

Demand for pets justifies them, people want specific breeds as companions and that is obviously enough. Working lines are usually excessive for the average owner. Too much energy and drive to be good family pets, they become liabilities.
