Snakes are a specific lineage of legless lizards. The other legless lizards are more closely related to Geckos or Skinks or Gallimorphs, or Alligator Lizards than they are to the legless lizards we call snakes, because they evolved leglessness separately. They also tend to have anatomical differences like fused jaws, and skulls, longer tail to body ratios, eyelids, ear openings, etc etc.
