vats can be wok shaped. in fact its one of the most commonly ocurring shapes for a vat and they are still used in industry to this day.
I can understand thinking of vats as having straight walls and being barrel shaped but there is no set shape for a vat, their shape varies depending on what they are for and many of the historical images I can find of people being boiled involve a wok shaped vat so presumably that's the best kind for the ancient art of tranny boiling.
