Marin (and variations) and Yor were the obvious FOTM cosplays for last con season. What are your predictions for this year?
My predictions:
>Yor spillover from last year
>a fuckton of Kobeni and Makima
>Mitsuri from Demon Slayer (her arc comes out in spring)
>Vash Stampede for guys

I saw maybe a single Marin where I live. Genshin and Demon Slayer both blew up way harder.

The Love Live people tend to be pretty dedicated to it, at least here, but they're a small group. I foresee more Genshin for years to come, some low-effort Chainsaw Man maybe, maybe some Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

I get why it's there, I just miss the variety of media that merch is based on. It takes up soooo much of every artist's catalog because there's so many characters. If I were an artist, I'd do the same but it sucks as a consumer who doesn't give a shit about Genshin.
>>

Along with what's previously mentioned, my big guess will be a lot of Bocchi the Rock! and half of them will carry inflatable guitars, AoT will still be around thanks to the two part final season, Konosuba will make a comeback due to the announcement of Season 3, and possibly some Gundam: The Witch From Mercury (or G-Witch as some people call it) since that garnered an entirely new fanbase of Gundam watchers.

It may be because I'm a Texasfag and we are fucking drowning in wannabe idols but I see so much Love Live at every con I go to. It's not nearly as bad as Genshin but it's up there. Not so much SIP anymore but lots of Aqours and Nijigasaki.
In that same vein I'm seeing an uptick in Vocaloid/Project Sekai but everyone is like twelve years old. What is happening?

Vtubers will probably keep growing in popularity as a cosplay topic, especially if stuff like what happened at ANYC happens at more cons. Bocchi is definitely gonna get a lot of cosplayers, but probably more fat meme crossplayers than anything.
Stuff from this season probably won't get much attention, except for maybe a few trannies cosplaying Onimai and a few gym girls cosplaying Tomo-chan. Next season, however, might have a big impact on cosplay considering a lot of series with anticipated anime are getting adaptations. Jigokuraku, Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu, and Oshi no Ko may have an impact, but how the otaku community at large will be impacted by those anime adaptations is uncertain.
Long distance forecast: With Bleach getting more attention given the anime finishing its final arcs, there will probably be an uptick in cosplayers for that series. Whenever Dungeon Meshi airs, I think you'll see a lot of people cosplaying the main gang from that, especially since they cover a wide range of body types. Genshin's anime probably won't have a visible effect on cosplay numbers considering how huge it is already.
>>
I also notice with a lot of Genshin cosplayers is that they love to cosplay as characters from the most recent released region. Cons finally started opening up in 2021 and there were so many Mondstadt and Liyue characters. In 2022 I saw a lot of Inazuma characters and I'm going to guess 2023 will be nothing but Sumeru characters, every girl who were Yae Miko or Raiden will now be Nilou and Dehya and every guy who were Zhongli and Itto are now going to be Alhaitham. So imagine a flavor of the month within a series.

Some commentary as someone who's watched the cosplay scene for 16 years, with a lot of naive hopes and dreams dashed upon realizing that the average congoer is basic as fuck:
>Vtubers
Yes, upward trend in general as the new Vocaloids of this decade for people to decade.
>Bocchi
Sorry, this won't be that popular with cosplayers. Outfits are plain and boring and honestly has a niche (but devoted) audience in the west. You might find a couple of Bocchis but less of everyone else combined.
>stuff from this season
Generally most cosplayers don't keep up this quickly. You'll have that tiny percentage of people who do speed cosplays for clout or fun but they're not the majority you'll find at cons.
>Onimai, Tomo-chan
Never will be popular
>future anime
Very very unlikely. Oshi no Ko has the biggest chance out of what you've listed.
>Dungeon Meshi
It's not going to be popular cosplay, that's for sure. A wide range of body types does not make it more popular for cosplayers.
>genshin anime
At this point it's speculated to be anything from just UFOtable making future animated PVs to OVA to shorts. Core fans will always be the established game fans.
>>
>>10830427
>Vash Stampede
Been rewatching/reading Trigun, and I do want to do some old school Vash cosplay. Thinking about putting on PPE under his coat and having people shoot at my legs while I try and dodge the bullets to make the bullet holes.
>>
>>10831353
really? I feel like the people who go too FOTM get less attention and note because there are just so many Raidens, Hu Taos, etc. Doing a less popular character like Lisa is guaranteed to generate more interest esp at a con.
>>10831145
The only Bocchi cosplayers I've seen at cons have been low effort men who do it for the meme

Dungeon Meshi might surge in popularity due to TRIGGER doing the anime
But really, we won't know what the next FOTM will be since it'll come completely left field, unless it's a new season of an existing show/adaptation of a super-popular manga
Not like anyone could've predicted Lycoris Recoil being a smash hit

>AoT
Never really went away desu. I’m guessing we’re probably gonna have one last burst of cosplays in 2023-24 before the fandom starts to die down after the final season is completed.
>Konosuba will make a comeback due to the announcement of Season 3
Konosuba’s getting both the Megumin spinoff AND S3 in the span of a single year, so I think you’re right.

That's gonna be the whole Spring/Summer of cons.
I've been out of the loop of anime/manga due to life kicking my ass but from what I see other weebs posting my guess are
>Spy x Family
>Jujutsu Kaisen
>AOT
>One Piece
>Chainsaw Man
>More Genshin Impact somehow
>Super Mario bc the movie
>Latest JoJo
>Trigun (a few cons have the staff and VAs as guests)
I might be missing stuff but that's just off the top of my head and
>>

here are my dark horse picks for fotm this year
>Splatoon Idols, possibly
>Needy Streamer Overload, feels like it blew up massively even though its like a year or two old
>Zelda ToTK, imagine ganon being a lock for big guys
>love live liella/nijigasaki
and for the shitpost pick it’s probably gonna be black guys dressing as the Animan Studios meme
>>
>>
Went to a con last month, my thoughts:
>Trigun
A bit skewed because the con had the director and producers as a guest, but there were TONS of Vashes and Wolfwoods to be seen. The series still seems to be gaining momentum.
>Spy x Family
This one's not going anywhere. It's easy to be a "cute couple", even able to coordinate your kid's cosplay, and they wear mostly "real" clothes that are comfortable and don't require a ton of makeup or accessories (I see Yors wearing her red sweater dress WAY more than the assassin gear).
>Chainsaw Man
The anime is very popular and the "black tie" costumes for the main cast make it dead simple to pull off. It's also been long enough that the community has really figured out how to make a helmet for CSM - seeing a cosplay with the head and arm saws used to be rare and attention-getting but now it's pretty commonplace.
>Resident Evil
You'd always see a couple Leons (RE2 or 4) at cons, seeing a bit of a resurgence with RE2 Remake and DBD, but with 4 coming out to really positive reviews I predict there are gonna be bunch of those guys.
>Cyberpunk
The anime was pretty popular, and I've seen cosplays of game-exclusive characters (V, Johnny) start to pop up again.
>>

No idea how popular the anime currently is, but Misaki from Dead Mount Death Play could be one
And maybe Clarrisa and her two girls for onlyfans thots
>>
>>10852648
How was Oshi no Ko at your con? Too soon for any presence?
>Trigun
This kind of weird given how the hype for the retelling anime died when people found out it'd be 3DCG, but then the anime picked up steam and word-of-mouth among mainly female fans by the end of the season. I don't know if it got really good (probably not) or if somehow the right fans got interested and spread the popularity. As far as I can remember, Trigun Stampede only started gaining momentum in March 2023.

Honestly I've always felt FRANXX was overhated, and it shows both series were a cut above the rest if they still have staying power 5-10 years later. Look on the flipside here...while not totally dead, Spy x Family is phasing out FAST and CSM is also slowing down.
>>
>>10867319
Who gives a shit it’s overrated? All anime is now. Zero Two is hot and gets bitches to cosplay half nude. Which is good because the less clothes involved the more you can gauge if the girl is actually attractive or not

One necessitates the other. If the show has no substance, they're not gonna dress like that character for long. Just look at the OP image: while not skimpy, Marin is prime bait for Gigastacies and (not surprisingly) it went from everywhere to almost gone. It only aired a year and a half ago.

>>
>>10865836
I feel like it's already peaked. The season is over, and season 2 being teased usually means a small resurgence when it airs but not much else. A cosplay gathering of ~20-30 Oshi no Ko cosplayers is probably about as big as it'll get at a con.

I think it's because most of the Vtubers popular in the western world are not popular in China, or outright banned/not operating in China. As a result, there is very little reason for Chinese factories to crank out cheap and fast costumes so the people who end up cosplaying it are the more devoted ones. Also Vtubers are still very much a niche genre/interest compared to regular anime/games despite how they appear to be everywhere on friends' feeds.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>10870364
Who cares if it doesn't? Those people likely wouldn't cosplay anything you actually do want to see, right? If it wasn't Genshin, it would be a different FOTM. Cosplay who you like and ignore shit you don't.

I don't think the latest FF will be as trendy or a FOTM. Most people who dive into FOTM opt for Aliexpress and usually aren't crafters. Plus theres a more medieval aesthetic and elaborate outfits in the new FF, no visual Kei elements or 'quirky' enough for the FOTM cosplayers or 'recognizable' enough for them to get compliments at con or online. I see diehard fans cosplaying from it though.
>>

>>10830427
At Galaxycon literally right now.
I see, in roughly order of saturation
>chainsaw man
>spy x family
>genshin
>demon slayer
>love live
The rest are kinda background level. A surprising lack of trigun, I don' think I've seen a single vash/wolfwood.
>>
>>10871329
I don't know love live enough to recognize them but all those others have peaked with nothing obvious to take their place. The drop off for spy x family is especially noticeable. Though every con I've been to as of late does have a presence of Trigun

I feel like Genshin is a bit of its own category where it's got a wide range of pretty outfits and faces that people can pick and choose from and it's all widely available from China with a few mouse clicks.
The number of people who made their own Genshin cosplay is like in the teens. I can only think of a single instance per character where the person made their own cosplay, and even then half of them were awful rushed "FIRST!" jobs.
>>

Can confirm this. My wife got into cosplaying and she will be going to cons as Mitsuri, Makima, and Yor. She's got a thin waist and huge assets so I'm assuming she'll do great. we just got back from Ulta and Sephora and I spent like 1.3k on her lmaooooo

Remains to be seen - although I've seen a TON of people dressing up at the movie theater, on social media I tend to see more "barbie-inspired" outfits or recreating movie outfits just for fancy dress rather than explicit "I'm cosplaying movie Barbie".
Several of the movie outfits have definitely been gaining traction (vintage swimsuit, gingham dress, roller skating, cowboy/girl, headband & fur coat Ken) so I'm expecting to see SOME cosplay in the coming months (and it'll be huge at Halloween) but maybe not a huge presence at cons. In general movies that aren't superhero/fantasy/sci-fi don't get tons of traction in the cosplay scene.
>>
>>10873777
I've already seen multiple barbie cosplays at just one con, the pink gingham dress being the most popular.
Maybe we will also see some planet of the bass cosplays now that that song is going viral and the official music video is out.
As for any upcoming anime, maybe apothecary diaries will be the next big thing once the anime comes out? The manga seems to be gaining quite some traction.

I have a weird pet theory that the resemblance to Power from CSM had a hand in her resurgence a bit
Along those lines I want someone to somehow make a creative cosplay where it's unclear which character it' supposed to be (like Zero Two's horns/headband but Power's eyes or something) for shits and giggles, just get upset whenever someone guesses who you are supposed to be

When you're at a con with, quite literally, 100+ Makima's, you can be sure you're witnessing the peak. There are still quite a few CSM's out there as opposed to say, Demon Slayer. At my last con, there was almost zero (thank God). You can couple that with the nosedive in quality too. While Part 2 was already showing cracks by this time last year, it wasn't the absolute disorganized mess it is now. There's no one to latch onto except Asa
>>
>>
>>10907225

>>
>>10909396
If I had to guess, Asa is the most cosplayed manga-only character at any convention, and has been since she debuted. Problem is, she's the only one. The enthusiasm I saw for CSM was through the roof well before any anime was even announced and it's just not there for Part 2 (nor would I expect it to be)

Not a massive trend, but I've consistently seen several Harry Du Bois cosplayers at every con I've gone to for the last couple years. Suppose it makes sense, it's really suiting for a certain type of overweight long-haired disheveled guy (like Fat Thor or The Dude in the past).
>>10876828
There's some of it, but I think it's a little to complex to really become a huge FOTM. A lot of people just aren't going to want to do the bodypaint and beyond for Karlach and Lae'zel, and the armor adds more cost and complexity (compare how body-painted homestuckers just wear t-shirts). Astarion is far and away the most-cosplayed BG3 character I've seen, and I'm pretty sure that's more reflective of how easy it is to cosplay "white blouse and leather pants" than his popularity.

>>
There will probably be some Dungeon Meshi cosplay this year, especially Marcille.
But this summer we will also see an anime adaptation of Plus-Sized Elf / Elf-san wa Yaserarenai. I expect this to become a very popular cosplay for those on the chubby side. It's a very easy cosplay since it's just gym clothes. The only somewhat difficult part will be the ears and wig.

For summer I'm predicting a LOT of the deer anime. Have already seen some cos online since the op became a meme and the girls look pretty simple to do (seifuku + wig + ears/horns for some).
Dungeon Meshi will probaly stay strong all summer. I just want the "gourmet" animes to end, they are becoming the new isekai.
I really thought there would be more Bocchi this past year, judging off of how "just like me fr" Bocchi is supposed to be. Perhaps the hype is dead at this point.

Saw one Hitori Goto (Boochi) last convention
It was a small one too
But since 2.5D Seduction started, behold
The next Marin (well, she can sew, unlike Marin)

Hazbin was without question the most popular series at both Katsucon and Sakuracon. Genshin may be fading away but it's far from gone (unlike that other series for low-effort kiddies that cropped up at the same time, Demon Slayer, rest in piss)

Demon Slayer had nowhere near the grabbing/staying power that I expected it to. Everyone went nuts for the first season yeah, particularly that one episode, but after that it just kind of fell off. No one actually talks about it/hypes over it and all of the "popularity" feels very artificial and more like marketing.

I always see some Arknights cosplay, but never a huge amount. FGO was the big gacha game insofar as # of cosplayers through 2019. Arknights released in January 2020 so any sort of hype it would have had the year of release was taken up by Covid, then Genshin came out in Fall 2020 which eclipsed basically every other gacha game

My condolences. Somebody here posted a Romanian con not long ago, and it was also swarming with them

So style lost to substance again? There's still hope yet then

I saw a Galleon and a Grimnir, both pretty well done but yeah as a fan of the series kind of a shame it's not more popular, considering it has a ton of characters.
>>10927882
I saw at least a Texas but otherwise also very limited.
Wish I could at least give them props on their choice but generally we'll both be just walking towards another place with no good chance to at least get a picture.

Was at my country's biggest con last weekend (yes I'm a europoor) and the amount of Hazbin was just fucking ridiculous. That show is ass, and it got FOUR fucking meetups over effectively three days. To top it all off there's another season on the way FUCK

I think it proves just how out of touch I actually am with the modern anime fandom and pop culture in general when I can't legitimately predict anything. I know we're definitely going to see (yet another) Deadpool boom along with some Wolverines, but that's really all I can say with confidence.

I find it funny how Squid Game wasnt that big in the cosplay scene, especially when cons were coming back during its heyday

>Bonus points if the cosplayer ropes her boyfriend into doing an Okarun cosplay at the con.
That's easy
Funnier would be, if they rope their grandma into doing the grandma

I'm almost tempted since it looks easy except for the staff. Yeah I can sew but a failure at props. What's the cheapest or most beginner-friendly way to make the staff and not have it look like a poop stick?

Some handful of Dandadan straggling from last year.
I haven't seen any extremely popular anime in the last year. Perhaps people will stick to their go-tos.
More Vtubers.
More Miku.
More not-anime cosplays from cartoons produced in the west.
I hope the Love Live! and Genshin stuff are mostly over.

Lots of genshin still

I really hope so. There was one Symboli Rudolf at my con who participated in the cosplay contest, she was incredible. Expert wig, expert outfit. She was handing out little carrot pins to anyone who came up to her.
