The first thing I made was a generic Harry Potter scarf and cloak, but that wasn't any specific character.
I'm actually not sure what my first proper character was, but I think it may have been Ryoga from Ranma and Derpy from MLP, both at the same con. Ryoga was the more proper cosplay of the two.

Had me some OD pants and a old police surplus leather jacket.

First cosplay was Mariko from Elfen Lied. Bought a skirt, shirt, and cardigan from Goodwill, and had my mom hem up the skirt and add lace and a bow to the cardigan. The wig was a shiny hideous monstrosity, my makeup was a mess, and the horns were some ugly flat foam creations sloppily bobby-pinned to the base of the wig. Absolutely awful. I'm not showing any pictures here.
I really like the character, so I want to revisit cosplaying her again someday. I'm sure my friends will be happy to hear about that after having to wheel me around in a wheelchair the first time.

My first cosplay was Deidara, I think this was in 2007. My mom made the cloak, my grandpa made the headband and I made everything else to the best of my abilities. I didn't use a wig or makeup, and I had the time of my life.

My grandma bought me a pale green striped shirt a few months before. I didn’t really like it. But it was nice.
Fast forward, I was going on a date to a local con. I needed something decent and clean. I found the pale green striped shirt. It passed the sniff test. I threw it on with some light brown khakis pants.
I walked up to the front desk, the desk jockey was excited to see me, never met him before. He told me funny cosplay.
I had accidentally dressed as Steve from blues clues in a 1:1 outfit.

My first and only cosplay was Alexander Anderson from Hellsing one year for Halloween when I was like 16. Mom bleached my hair, I drew his signature scar on my face with a marker, cobbled together his outfit (based off his appearance in the Hellsing TV series) with clothes from my closet (I actually had a grey trenchcoat that was perfect), and made a pair of his knives out of cardboard. Pretty much did as well as I possibly could with what I had at the time. It was fun, I should cosplay again some day.

Actually planning out my first ever cosplay right now with my best friend, it won't be good but hopefully we'll finish Thiollier and sir Ansbach by spring/summer.
We've done quite a bit of larp-related crafting ( sewing costumes, making foam armor and weapons, leather stuff, latex works etc ) and he also has some basic cosplay experience and decent 3d-printing skills.
Still, I don't have any hopes for an actually good first cosplay for many reasons, Thiollier's fucking hair cape and just-fuck-me-up detailing included.
Regardless, this should be an educational crafting experience and we'll have fun along the way.

When I was 19 I did Sakuya from touhou crossplay with a really shitty maid outfit I found on amazon a week before the con. At the photoshoot I felt super awkward next to the other sakuyas who had sewn their dresses from scratch. Also I had never shaved my legs before so I ended up with irritation so bad it took several months to go away. It was fun though and a few people asked for photos
