>the year is 2017
>everyone at the con is checking their streetpasses every 30 minutes
we'll never get this back, and it hurts so much

went to a con this year, i got quite a bit desu. not as much as the glory days of years back, but you can still get them. the biggest tip here is to use the dlc with the 100 person line so you can shove everyone there and get room for new people

I'm going to a con in a couple weeks, and honestly considering bringing my 3DS and just leaving it on but closed inside my bag to see if I get any hits. I think I got a couple the last time I did it.
But yeah. Nintendo should bring back Streetpass with the Switch 2, just fucking do something fun for the players.

it actually was crazy how much fun everybody had with pokemon go. i get it was a mega fad and the game got progressivly worse apparently, but i feel like everybody was just so happy and i think since pandemic theres just no joy like that

>Go to one of the bigger cons near me last year
>Got 3
The good Leon Kenedy cosplayer had his specialized but the rest was randos.
Mine was just the mii and message of the japanese 3DS owner I bought it off of because I got it for 40$ to jailbreak lmao.

attendance at magfest is at or more than it was in 2015 - 19k last year
the difference is that the nostalgia bait panels that used to appeal to you now appeal to zoomers

It felt like there was more variety. People actually cosplayed from a ton of different things. I feel like every con is the same shit these days. Maybe it’s because I was a teenager attending cons from 2011-2016 but I used to get genuinely excited to meet people, make cosplays, and learn new things. People in general felt friendlier, too.
Maybe I’m just getting old

I'm in the same general age range and I definitely do feel like it's a mixture of both cons being objectively different and me just getting older. 2008-2016~ cons felt like they were genuinely people who were there for passion out of the things they liked, modern cons feel like a lot of people aren't actually attracted to specific anime or media they love but feel like they like just this general semi-ironic "idea" of anime that gets taken in a more ironic tone. FotM anime feel samey-r and shit feels way more stupidly sexualized.
I'm not really that big on panels either but they feel like they've also switched from people going in-depth on interesting niche hobbies to just people wanting an excuse to talk about themselves.

Best to get them streetpasses at retro video gaming cons now! I point to Classic Game Fest in Austin, Texas as a great example where you can still receive dozens of streetpasses a day! For those on the coasts, maybe try PAX again?

I went to a con for a day back in January and I managed to get around 25+ people! Very humbling to see folks still using their 3DSes. ( Reminds me to put some new batteries into my Pokéwalker... hope that shit hasn't corroded yet)
Definitely going to bring my 3DS again to the big con in a few weeks. Hoping to get more travelers in Tomodachi Life!

>Jailbroke a japanese 3DS last year
>Took it to a medium con
>Biggest in the area at the time
>3 street passes
>Only one of note was a Leon cosplayer
Should've taken one to AnimeNYC or NYCC to see, but there's no good video game cons outside of PAX on the east coast.

Yeah, there's multiple youtube videos about it. It's all very retarded though. He dated a 15 y/o when he was 19 back in 2010, and has apparently been a sexpest about his foot fetish kink to a couple of people (including a troon lol).
A different youtuber from the same Let's Play guild Chugga was in dated me when I was 14 back in 2008 even though he was 23 at the time. It was just a different era back then, where fucked up shit like that slipped through the cracks and nothing was done about it aside from my parents screaming at me and breaking us up. Nothing was ever publicized about it and everything was through Skype.

Yeah I read up about it. Honestly, just seems like he was being a typical weird guy you'd ignore IRL, even moreso online. All that shit about being traumatized and how brave the girls are is retarded lmao.

Mid-late 2010's was one of the worst times to go to cons in history. Streetpasses were fun (I didn't have a 3DS but my frens did so I go to see secondhand how fun they were), but everything else was either worse than it is now or laid the groundwork for the bad things going on at cons today.
>the fucking Deadpools everywhere
>every con had a major presence from one of the two major streaming services of the time, a lot of the prime time panels were those studios shilling their shit, general cluelessness of or uninformed hostility towards torrenting started here because they were pushing their shit so hard
>costhots being advertised as main events (they still get advertised in modern cons but in their own containment sections), which ruined casual cosplaying and turned it into a tryhard thing
>cosplays you'd see is 50% the current or last season's FOTM thing, 25% Deadpools, 25% everything else
>general pre-MeToo "don't look at me, rapist!" hostility in the community (people want to memoryhole this, but dating for the bottom 80% was actually worse back then because there was a legal risk to being rejected)
>if your con was during pride month people would show up with their pronouns flags and sometimes cons would seem like pride parades because of all the flags (didn't really bother me but I remember anons here being upset about it at the time)
I'd even go as far as to say that cons are better now in the post-covid era than they were back then. They're different and some of the good stuff from back in the mid 2010's is gone, but corporate not being at most cons will be a huge plus in the coming years, plus people are less hostile to being approached now.

I wasn't being cynical when it comes to cons in the current decade. Cons now are still not as good as 00's cons, but they're way better than 2010's cons. The only big thing I miss from the 2010's that's gone now is viewing rooms since they were somewhere to go when you ran out of things to do and didn't feel like going through the dealer hall for the fifth time.

Pre-2009 was peak conventions.
Basically just people interested in anime, games and Jrock.
That was before they started milking Marvel/DC movies, so you didn't have to deal with people cosplaying cringe Super Heroes™ at cons.
No cancel culture around that time either (People didn't see "Boothbabes" as a problem that can LITERALLY DESTROY THE SOCIETY), we didn't have organizers dedicating panels to discuss "diversity" or "how we must do X in order to fight against Y in the gaming industry".

I went to a small local con this December and I only met 4 people with my 3DS, it was so sad. I plan on going to Japan in June and will go to some big event, I'll bring my 3DS with me and see how it goes but I have low expectation and will mostly take my 3DS to play in the plane anyway.

Anyone get to finish Puzzle Swap yet (at least for their region)? I was able to get across the finish line on that (North American region) last month thanks to a couple of reliable friends with 3DS'. I will admit that cons did help immensely tho these past 12 or so years. Now onto the StreetPass games I will never complete/finish...

Saving this thread for the third (and probably last) time, but I think this video is especially relevant, and shows that you can still get a decent amount of StreetPasses as long as you attend the right events(mainly gaming cons) with your 3DS:

Pre-2010s was the golden age. Cons grew pretty large but still had a community feel before most large cons turned into commercial theme parks and before you had random normie perverts trolling for nerd pussy. Lots of variety in cosplay and most being homemade for the love of it. Goofy and sometimes cringe panels but fun to participate.Multiple cons actually allowed people to conduct specific 4chan panels.
Early to mid 2010s was still a good time but gradually changing. /cgl/ meetups could happen without the board being filled with seetheposting. AX became the notorious megalinecon it is today. Other megacons like PAX and MagFest matured in this time.
Late 2010s was transition to full commercial industry and simultaneous infiltration by both holier-than-thou SJW types because of college indoctrinations and normie assholes thanks to Marvel movies. By this point 4chan was persona non grata at most con administrations.
Today the community feeling is gone and most large cons are basically people attending to consume instead of participate. Most cosplays are the flavor of the month Gacha game, not even the FOTM anime any more. However there are upsides like better relations with japanese companies making more high profile JP guest appearances at smaller cons and not only at the biggest cons.

I've been getting a lot of street passes at big or medium-sized anime conventions here in California. I almost always get ten per day at those cons, I'm so used to not getting any on normal days that I forget to check throughout the day though, so I wouldn't be surprised if I was actually able to get more than ten per con day.
Just encourage people to bring their 3DS. I've been convincing people to start bringing them to small local events too. Just whip it out and people instantly start saying, "Oh, I should have brought my 3DS". I cosplay from Pokemon sometimes, so I've even had a battle or two.
I do miss pictochat though. Waiting in line for panels at AX while on pictochat was always some chaotic fun. I don't think THAT will come back any time soon.

Other than the usual StreetPass Mii Plaza stuff, what games would you like to see played at these meetups? I hear Mario Kart is a popular option, but what else? Happy 20 years to the DS btw!

Easiest method to finish Puzzle Swap, sadly, is gaining enough Play Coins and gambling on each panel until completion.
Prepare to see the SAME COMPLETED PANEL get chosen and filled at 5 random times.
Recommended strat is simply...
- homebrew your 3ds first
- find the "300 play coins" homebrew app online
- press everytime your coins are low
- gamble away at Streetpass Puzzle Swap
Lame methods, but that's the reason I completed it.

I went to a Japan convention last week and took my 3ds with me. I met like 6 people with streetpass which is low but better than nothing. I also met a few people in Japan in general when going to Pokemon Centers and Nintendo Stores. I'll try going to local cons with my 3ds for the first time in forever in a few months and see what I get, I don't have high hopes but yesterday on my way to work I saw some young woman carrying her 3ds in the subway station so who knows.
>>
At a con in Canada this weekend someone brought their 3DS, I asked them if they were getting random street passes and he said "Im trying but its rough out here" we bonded on how it should be a thing on the steam deck or an app now.

This is gonna sound insane, but I feel like Nintendo should make a smaller handheld console for on the go gaming and stuff like street pass.
The Switch/Switch 2 are "portable", but too pricey. large, and delicate to want to keep in your pocket.
>>
>>10901577
actually it was the rise of the smartphone and tiktok promoting chasing viral trends. People cosplayed for the love of the game but now they cosplay popular characters even when they haven't watched their shows
>>
the last time I went to a con, I barely managed to pack what I needed, because my costume took up half my briefcase, and my purse was extremely heavy as is with the basic necessities to attend the con, trying to bring a 3ds and carry it around on top of everything sounds insane with my situation, even if I saw some people discussing it there
it was already tough, things are heavy, my costume is also high effort to simply wear, and bringing extra device abroad that's surprisingly hefty and requires a charge cable (and has awful standby time) is just a big ask

I went to a con last month, Fan Expo Toronto, that specifically had a little event for people with 3DS' to meet up. I couldn't attend it sadly so I don't know how many people were there, but I did get like 15 streetpasses from walking around there.

Yeah, you'd think someone would've tried turning it into an app years ago.

>how we must do X in order to fight against Y in the gaming industry
I wouldn't mind a panel on "how we must do LAN parties in order to fight faggotry in the gaming industry". It'd be like a more entertaining J18 panel

I got the dsi in 2010 I think when I was 8 but never really caught on to the 3ds. The dsi has been through somw hwll not as bad as others but it still works and rhe screen isn't all that scratched but it does have issues turning off if you bend it some. I still have a psp that also went through some but the screen is still good. I also never caught on to the wifi u and then the switch took over everything Nintendo. I'm not sure its cause I dont game as much now or the switch seems a bit hard to use and too much stuff on it but I'll get one someday
