OP, I share your passion so much. Also, it's in the con floor where it's at. You never know when someone is going to gush all over your costume, when someone with 2 milion followers will ask you a picture and you'll only find out, or when a TV news station will interview you, or you'll find someone from the same franchise you're cosplaying.

It's the best game of chance you can play, ever. Some people will never understand it. That's why I go to as much conventions as I can. It's a wonderful place to be.

Under any other circumstance, I'd agree. With ColossalCon, it's non-negotiable. Sleeping in the parking lot is better than booking off site, especially when (not exaggerating) Holiday Inn is going for $400 a night that weekend

I've had a very opposite reaction so it probably just depends on who. One sub-21 zoom was shocked when I told him I was 29 at the con, he was fine with it but I had to block him when he wouldn't stop asking me for nudes. Something that can really make or break a con for me is the balancing act between with tismos and "normal" interactions (quotation marks since they're weird for the standards of true normalfags). Too much tism, I'm annoyed and drained. Too much neurotypical behavior, I get bored. Get some of both, I'm hype from start to finish. The best experiences have some of each but rarely hit the sweet spot

I've been going to conventions, 4chan meetups, arcades, dances, and all that for over 15 years. I've never talked to a soul outside of a terse conversation or request for a photo. Someone in a chatroom told me that wasn't what all these were intended for a couple months ago. I was shocked, but I don't think I'm going to change anything since I'm still very awkward with initiating conversations, and I generally annoy people in my age group because my knowledge is so far removed from theirs

Most of them are cool, and I lurk the Anime North thread each year since they're always funny. Whatever the case, those posts are especially full of shit when it's about a con I know very well. one of my best con stories was pre jojo popularity explosion pre anime, I'm talking like SBR was on chapter 5. I was at magfest vibing talking shit at the fighting games and drinking playing mahjong some australian dude says hey come check out room blah blah blah. I get up there it's just one black dude says everyone's on a liqour run or something we play some shit fighter or something and get into a fucking hour long discussion about how duwang translation was peak and gold experience requiem may or may not have been great. I don't know who the fuck that was never saw the australian dude ate free pizza and drank liquor was turned away by arin hanson at another party I was invited to and karmas a bitch that was the year he scarred his face busting it on a toilet seat.

You'd think so, unfortunately the reality is much more grim, as tends to be the case with many things these days. I was big into going to "anime raves" two years ago, both ones at cons and ones played locally by a certain group that organizes them. Maybe 40% of the music played is anime or anime-adjacent, everything else is random EDM genres, a lot of it garbage. For example, last year at the most recent con rave I've been to only one of the three DJ's I saw played anisong remixes, the other one played some nondescript EDM slop you'd hear in the background of some Twitch stream, and the third one played dubstep and idk what they played after that because I left during their set.

It's one of the consequences of anime becoming mainstream. The road to making it as a DJ is paved with grinding out weddings and random gigs before your networking lands you at some club, so a lot of DJ's who don't give a shit about anime end up doing con raves anyway because a gig's a gig and anime is mainstream enough to where con raves end up on non-weebs' radars.

Okay, this is the last convention I'm going to with fucking zoomers. The entire weekend consisted of:
1. Feeling like I'm babysitting a group of grown ass men
2. Being called old in several different for liking things from five-plus years ago
3. Dealing with them getting bored of events after ten minutes and having to leave the area or look at stupid shit on their phones like kids grabbing for an iPad
4. Non-anime related bullshit
We all are aged 21 to 24, but the people I went with acted like emotionally (and normal) retarded iPad babies that think liking stuff that's both more than a few years old and ISN'T Five Nights at Freddies is lame. One of them hadn't figured out how to pace himself drinking nor did the others care to check up on him, so he wound up missing out on the entire weekend from light alcohol poisoning off booze that I bought. None of them knew how a grocery store worked so they often went out to expensive diners, dropped 25-35 dollars per meal (despite being "broke"), and then would BARELY TALK at the table, only muttering something about the phone game they were playing. But the worst thing was that they acted like complete normalfags at a /CONVENTION/. They barely spoke about anime and when they did they acted all uncomfortable and distant. Conventions are social events, not a "stand around other anime fans" event

I don't know if it's something about me running into people like this or if it's all of them, but I wish more young adults would fucking act like they're adults. Being emotionally and intellectually stunted isn't something to be proud of or cute. If you act like this, you aren't "cute" anymore; you're old and awkward. Have some confidence, read a fucking book once in a while, and if you don't understand something or if someone doesn't understand what you're saying, BE OKAY WITH ASKING FOR AN EXPLANATION AND/OR GIVING THEM.
