Cosplay-adjacent question, my living arrangement isn't so great this year and my work-from-home setup has taken over my sewing desk. I need to still make costumes for 2025, what's the best way to get a setup going for sewing? I cannot move my work equipment since I'll need them on a daily basis.

>got the shirt, boots, sleeve garter taken care of
>using mummy bandages instead of gauze, the white sleeves and such should handle curved areas like the nose
>need a new vest because I bought a cheapo Amazon one with pockets over where SLCPD and SWAT need to be
Question now is whether it's better to paint the vest markings or use one of those fabric markers you see at hobby lobby. I also need a Bible and the .45.

>Second desk
I know that is the most logical and simplest answer, but it's also a space issue. My sewing desk-turned-workstation is already crammed into my bedroom and there is no space for a second desk. I've thought about using the dining table but it also seems like a huge hassle to have to reset it twice a day and ensure there's no stray thread or fabric lint in food, or the risk of getting oil stains on fabric.
>>
>>10944920
Do you sew every day or multiple times a week? Do you use your desk for work for home purposes every day or multiple times a week?
How big is your room? What items need to be in your room (bed, desk, etc) and how big are they?
There are space saving solutions but it helps to know what exactly the situation is before giving recommendations.

First cosplay ever! I sewed the top half myself with a pattern from indigo patterns on Etsy. It’s a sleeveless button up shirt, jacket, and bow brooch. This is made with bed sheet and it’s my first time sewing anything with sleeves. The cosplay judging booth at the con I went to really liked it :) Skirt isn’t screen accurate because usps got delayed

I’d use your work/personal desk as a sewing space. I’m guessing that you have a pc and that’s the issue, right? Is it possible for you to store your pc and use a laptop instead? That way, both machines are easily portable and you can alternate

Going as Crona for this year's con. Would appreciate any advice on how to cut and style this wig to look more like Crona's canon hair. I know I will need to trim and hairspray it... But I really like the way crimped wigs look and hold shape. Do I literally buy a crimper? Do I brush it out after crimping? Do I have to tease it? How do I make the sides flip out after trimming? Etc...

I think it's fine if you're actually invested in the character you're cosplaying. I think most people roll their eyes because a lot of bodybuilders/gym-bros will just use cosplaying as a lazy excuse to show off their gains

you'll have to check the rules for the con you're attending to see if you can be shirtless or not. they might limit shirtlessneess entirely or they may allow it for men in cosplay photo areas, it really depends. i did see a man get informed he had to put on a shirt at a con i was at recently and i got a lot of amusement out of it

I'm gonna be making a Katana Man cosplay. I've never made a helmet before, but I found a guide for making one out of foam. I'll also be making the blade from foam. What'd be the best way to securely attach the blade to the helmet? I don't want it to fall off or imbalance the rest of the helmet while I'm wearing it.

>do i buy a crimper
A good one isn't cheap. If you do this you'll need to carefully control the heat so as to not melt your wig and you're going to want to section it so the most visible parts of the wig don't look like a frizzy mess.
>do i brush it out after crimping
Yes.
>how to make the sides flip after trimming
Take a hair straighter, heat up the ends, then quickly wrap them around something cylindrical. You can also use hair curlers and dunk the ends in boiling, then cold water. The idea is the plastic will melt into the correct shape when it cools off.

Finishing up my cosplay of Severian from Book of the New Sun that I'm planning to wear to PAX. I'm pretty disappointed in this cloak, but I had a tight budget so this is the blackest one I can afford right now. In the future I'd like to custom make one and give it a lining of some ornate fabric. I just finished printing the sword, so I'm going to spray paint it silver and gold, and then hand paint some details on the hilt.
I'll have to post a full-body once the boots I bought come in.
>>
>>
Maybe a silly opinion question, but I'm looking into my first truly homemade cosplay. The thing is, it's a character that wears pretty normal clothing. Like the outfit is mostly stuff I could get as real clothing. However, it wouldn't be accurate to a few details/accents. I guess I'm wondering, do people tend to appreciate 1:1 accuracy or would they rather something be adapted/more realistic?

I'm a newbie to cosplay and the questions may have been asked before but I don't care, so here goes;
I want to cosplay 2B from NieR:Automata (yeah how original) and considering I suck at making shit myself, I'm planning to buy it. I'm the fucker with too much expendable income so I would spend up to 800-1k euro for a good quality one. Is there any sites I could buy the full set (with or without sword), preferably in the EU so I don't have to worry about any kind of customs fees.
I have long natural hair, how the fuck do I put on a wig??

>I have long natural hair, how the fuck do I put on a wig??

My last cosplay was really heavy and cumbersome to wear with a leather jacket, foam chest plate, large 3d printed prop gun and a 3d printed helmet that fogged up and limited vision.
So I want to do something simple I can wear more casually, and was thinking of pic rel. I can def make it, I just want to know if I'll look totally retarded if I got a beer gut as pt3 Joseph.

I want to start cosplaying, specifically making props and armor. I figured Darktide enemies would be good, since they have grungy armor where damage can hide the mistakes I'll probably make, and most wear masks and helmets to hide my nervousness.
I guess general newbie question, but where should I start? Practice with other foam armor tutorials, start with easy stuff like the pauldrons, get the actual clothes first, etc?

Its really simple
>Get shredded
>If allowed - go show off your chest

>>
>>
>>10953630
If it's your first go, there are a lot of parts to fabricate, you don't know what you don't know, etc, and you'll probably need to combine foam crafting, kitbashing things like hardware store respirators and scooter helmets with other crap, and a bit of sewing, maybe some 3d printing.
If you don't know shit about any of these, I think it will take you months of working at it bit by bit on the weekends. Which is fine, but don't expect it to get MVP before fall. Warhammer shit is fiddly with lots of details. Its not like just jazzing up an affordable FOTM gacha daddy Chinese premade cosplay with some foamcrafting, sewing a few details, replacing fabric details with more accurate 3d printed or scratch built bits.

Thinking of doing Sakamoto for a small con in my small city, seems simple enough to pull off. One hurdle is I actually want the glasses to be one-way visible. Your mother. A local sewing store. Search the web for "How to sew".
>I want to try making this outfit
That doesn't look simple... Have fun working with knits on the sleeves and vinyl on the gloves, ears, and vest on your first go at sewing anything
> I've got no real clue where to start.
Start by looking up how to make the costume you want and making enough time and buying enough material to make it three times. Any good tutorial will show you how to take measurements.

Working on a cosplay of the Faithkeepers from Frostpunk, the Frostpunk 2 design in particular.
Got most shit planned out, but anyone know of a good way to simulate soot?
Like, i could just scrub my hands on some charcoal and rub em at the cloth, call it a day, but i would like to avoid the homestuck troll makeup thing of accidentally staining shit like chairs with the soot.
An idea i had was watering down black watercolors and using that, but it feels like there has to be a better way. I'm using a thick, rough cotton cloth for the main body of the costume.

>>10953768
For a full beginner, i would recommend starting up with either something simple like a shirt or a jacket, where it doesn't matter that much that the measurements are exact, and then moving on to high-detail practice making something like a plushie. Making clothes for plushies and larger dolls is a great way to same on cloth money while practicing, it can build up quick even using the cheap stuff. Plus, less bulky to store.
Skintight stuff in general, like gloves and things that have to grip the skin like that bunnysuit, can be really annoying to make as a beginner since they require a lot of precision to look right, specially with less stretchy cloths like what that looks like it uses.

Never made cosplay or cosplayed before, but I figured this would be the place to ask. I was thinking about making a cultist robe, the idea is that it's an anonymous host body for a large group of cultists that could use magic to take turns being in control of the body. This would be shown by me making some sorta ritual or magic trick thing, and then changing my voice and mannerisms.
The thing I wanted to know here that my idea sort of relies on is... is there any decent ways to get a blacked out face effect for a cosplay so I could maintain the illusion of being a faceless entity? Like I think there's some black see through stuff people use for costumes where they want to hide the face right? Would that actually look good for this or is it way too obvious?
I looked at google for images of cultist or grim reaper cosplays but none of them seemed to be going for a blacked out face, either all having their face out normally or using some mask instead.

Taking suggestions on this too if anyone has any neat ideas, I'm going more for a comedic style than a spooky lovecraftian horror so it's fine if it's a bit silly or cartoony.
If anyone has any idea how to make some simple puff of smoke or anything that looks like a little goofy magical effect I would love some advice on that, like if I could maybe do something like this scene from kung pow.

So I want to get a gauge for how possible it is to use cameras on a helmet to see (as in actually be able to see in front of and around myself) with screens in the helmet in front of my eyes.
Is there a low latency kinda streaming setup I could do somehow? Would the screens be too close to the eyes to be used practically?
I ask this 'cause a common complaint about masked cosplay (and stuntmen) is that its hard to see out of the mask, if at all. This would make a cool project if its actually possible, like a temu bootleg Ironman lol.

I can't find anything premade that looks the same shape or color. Wigs are always shitty, you need to learn how to spice them up.
If your doing a custom hairline, use FossShape, otherwise get a decent quality wig, a faux head, and a fuckton of hair spray, mousse, hair iron, and a comb to shape it how you want.

Would like some honest opinions about this. Its a Mikuo cosplay. I havent done the detached sleeves yet.
Do you think the shirt looks ok?
For Mikuo I have seen it with and without sleeves. I went with no sleeves for better mobility and because fuck sewing sleeves. Still not sure if I like how it looks. Also, is the ruffle on the shoulders too much? Should I use bias tape instead? Or nothing?
Also, the ruffle at the bottom crumples the fabric (its stretchy) should I use interfacing before sewing the ruffles?
Finally, I have doubts about the shoulder darts. Should I make them vertical? They cause some crumpling over the chest, but I dont know if vertical darts would fix it.
Thanks.

wanna pull something like this off, for a con in november. I want more of a 1975 MSF look or some sort of combo with the soldiers from peace walker and the lost soldiers from MGS V. Any general tips someone might have that's pulled off something similar? This'd be my first cosplay, and I'm willing to do some DIY, not just buy the shit off of a surplus site or something

Ok everyone make fun of me for being a touristfag and laugh at me for making a whole thread because for whatever fucking reason you guys don't title your QTDDTOT threads as QTDDTOT threads. Migrating post question...
What do gulls use, generally, for overly-long bandanas/arm wraps/flowy-whatevers-you get the picture? Using Snake here as an example but that's kind of cheating since there's a million etsy shops making his bandana. Do you guys buy yards of cloth and cut them thin? Buy pre-made, thinner spools of cloth? I'm at a loss here. Jelly rolls of cloth are ok but they're generally capped at 45" unless you custom order.

thinking of cosplaying a simplified version of picrel before years end, can anyone more learned than I tell me what that white part hanging off the front of the kimono is? Like what's it called and how it fits in with the rest of the outfit?
Is it part of the obi? If so should I assume the obi has at least two completely separate trims, colors, and patterns? And isn't the big red bow usually part of the obi too? How can it be all three? I can't tell which part is a separate thing because it just doesn't make sense to have both a bow knot in the back, AND a front fold drape, all being different colors, patterns and in the case of the red bow, fabric

>do people tend to appreciate 1:1 accuracy or would they rather something be adapted/more realistic?
It depends. I don't think you need to be 1:1 accurate to be good (and in fact, just from the nature of anime, some 1:1 would look worse than changing details a bit). However, what people appreciate are the small details (even if not 1:1, small details unique to the character are often what makes a cosplay stand out to me).
That said, don't sweat it; first homemade cosplay, enjoy the process, people will still like your cosplay regardless.

Does anyone have any good tutorials on makeup, especially for cosplay? More specifically- for men?
I want to nail my next cosplay, and I can tell it would look a lot better if I could add more sharpness to my face/nose and flatten out the color to be more pale. Googling gave me some okay answers, but if anyone has any good resources (books I could buy, specific youtube videos), that would be great- even if its just beginner makeup, as I have 0 ability right now.

You need some indication on your head, or maybe arms....I can't help, but you are just missing a slight something to be instantly recognizable. Maybe the angle hides the tail too much.

I got so many compliments at a weeb con for my Attack on Titan outfit that I decided to start going to cons more and wearing cosplays more just to chase the dopamine high of validating compliments from strangers (and a few cute girls too). Best part is the cosplay doesn't even have to look good, people just compliment you for trying, which is sweet.

You can either do a pepakura with EVA foam or if you already have a printer, check cgtrader.
There's a full mask on there for 3$ currently but you'll have to separate the jaw yourself on your slicer it looks like.
Just use elastic to attach it, maybe get some furry eye mesh in black for the sockets.

Old post, but whatever. For larger masks I've hooked up my phone on the inside and positioned the peephole to where my phone camera looks out, and hooked up to a power bank to stay on constantly. It works pretty decently, but can be an issue being too large (get a secondhand smaller phone in this case) or too close to your eyes to be able to focus on. There are other methods you can use like Arduino/Raspberry Pi with smaller cameras but phones are much easier to work with, power, and set up if your mask has enough space for one.

Reposting from other Beginner thread since no one replied since Saturday.
Hello, gulls.
Complete neophyte to costume making and cosplay, but I wanted to get into it for some Halloween parties coming up.
I want to do the Flagellant from Darkest Dungeon, given that he seems relatively simple to assemble.
Questions for the experienced as I blindly throw myself headfirst into this:
- The leg and arm wraps are easy enough (gauze rolls dyed with black acrylic paint), but how do I make the stud looking things in his arms? I'm pretty sure in-game they're metal bars impaling him, but I like to un-impaled.
- What material do I use for the hood? It needs to cover the eyes but I'd like to be able to see. Is cotton muslin sheer enough to hide the eyes will still allowing vision, or do I use something else?
- I can't tell if his skirt would be made by a single piece of fabric wrapped around the waist, or if it should be cut from a larger piece. If it is cut, what shape do I make? I was thinking a diamond shape, with the top and bottom points longer than the sides (to cover in front and behind but leave room in the sides to move), and then cutting out a portion in the middle of the diamond to wear it. I'm very new to fabric work so please tell me if I'm being retarded and overthinking this.
- For the flail/collar/bracelet, do I stick to EVA foam, or is there a chance I can (on the cheap) make them out of actual metal? Granted, I have basically no tools or experience for metalworking, so I think this is kind of a long shot.
Additionally, I've never touched EVA foam in my life. Do I have someone make them for me (please give trusted vendors) or do you think I could do it with some good tutorials (please give me good tutorials). I've got about 2 1/2 weeks to make this work, and I think it can done in that time.
Thanks in advance, frens.

Something weird happened
I made this >>10957819 and at some point noticed some black stains that I dont know how I got
Anyway, I tried washing it but some much larger stains appeared on the armpits area.
I have no idea what these are. I didnt use any marker when cutting, the only source of black color I can think of is lycra fabric under the hologram coat, but why would it stain only onnsome areas? A reaction to sweat or to deodorant?

I can't speak to the rest, but I can tell you my experience with EVA foam.
It's actually pretty easy to work with. Despite this, I watched a terrible video about how to use it and my first attempt was... okay. I watched a bunch more and my second attempt turned out pretty well. I still need some practice with blending seams, but otherwise not bad. I wore it in public and wasn't ashamed of my work.
I think these videos from Kamui Cosplay were the most helpful:

Also, 2-1/2 weeks isn't a lot of time! I started my build two months before I needed to finish it...

Flagellant anon here, new question since most of the previous ones have been dealt with.
Does anyone have any advice/recommendations for fake blood capsules/bags? Everything on the clothing already will be dried in, watered-down acrylic paint, and the scars/wounds are going to be liquid latex/makeup, but I need something to both bleed from the mouth and have a (soft) explosion of blood from the hand. I could probably achieve the latter with stage blood in a small plastic bag that I hide in the hand then burst, but I don't really have any experience here.
Basically, recommend me blood capsule/stage blood brands. Needs to look fresh and flowy.

Not really sure where to ask otherwise but where do you guys get your fabric since JoAnn went under? No hope for anyone buying it to bring them back as Michaels already has and wants to basically take JoAnn and turn it into one or two aisles in only some of their stores; knowing the strange prices at Michaels I also doubt I'll ever want to buy anything in that aisle (their leather tools cost about 4-5x Harbor Freight for about the same quality). Walmart and other stores only stock pitifully small pieces of felt and maybe some very basic fabrics like fleece, not to mention a lot of places only offer fabrics in 1yd pieces. My only real hope to get to a physical store that stocks fabric is Hobby Lobby but it's quite a drive.

Contact cement. But really just sew by hand unless you have some condition that won't allow it. Avoid heat.

Window tint film? Might peel up and you have to very thoroughly clean your lenses to apply it (like applying a screen protector, you want all dirt gone) but it's only like $20 a roll or less. Used on house or car windows usually.

Polyurethane sticks to polyurethane so if you go with Smooth-On foam and pour a piece to make the mask from, then some long rectangular boxy pieces for the blade and the handle, you could theoretically just "glue" these three together when they're nearing completion of carving by mixing up more foam and slathering it on the "blade" end that goes against the forehead then pressing it to the helmet and holding. Never tried it but silicone works the same way. Freshly mixed silicone will stick to fully cured silicone if poured over it. Freshly mixed polyurethane foam/polyurethane resin will stick to fully cured polyurethane foam/polyurethane resin. I may recommend a slightly soft variation of the foam like FlexFoam-iT!, but not something too soft where it goes floppy. Hard foam can be very brittle and while your pieces shouldn't be too thin, breakages in foam suuuuuuuck. You might also want to put a wire in it but make sure the wire goes AROUND your head and not something that just ends at your forehead so you don't have a nice sharpened spike at your forehead at all times.

3 months late but the jacket is kinda close, hard to say; also look into the regular BDUs or shirts that are in OD green. Rothco probably has it and then if that's not cheap enough you can buy a real one on eBay if it might be cheaper that way. Can't find great pics of the flashlight through a lazy search but the one I did find, definitely an angled head surplus flashlight if you're talking the one clipped to his chest pocket. Something like a Fulton MX-991. Knockoffs available on Amazon and at surplus stores, no doubt. This is the kind of flashlight that takes 2 C or D batteries, so be sure to buy some AA to C or D adapters if just to prevent it pulling on your shirt or constantly falling off because of the weight.

>gee Bill, TWO pistol belts?
I also spy some M16 30rd mag pouches (canvas ~$40 instead of nylon ~$3-15) and an M-12 holster (~$35). Also the M12 is from the 1980s, used for the 1911 and Beretta 92FS (adopted by the US in 1985) so it may be a little anachronistic for ~1975. However that doesn't mean anything if that's what the game uses as MGS is known to do things like that, not to mention the 92 has been made since 1976. The 1911 has existed since, well...

Trying to locate a raglan like misaki's is absolute fucking cancer aids, makes me want blow my brains outside, I've been searching for 4 fucking hours. It doesn't fucking exist, everything is WRONG WRONG WRONG :(
>>
>>10966385
for big bows like that you can kinda just cheat it, make the two big triangular bits (you can technically make them together but idk hwow to explain) and use some interfacing for sturdiness, if u rlly want it to stay up right you can insert wires. Then sew those two bits at the point and wrap a strip of fabric around.
for the dangly bit just make them as two long pieces with each shaped and if u don't want it to look like shit you must use interfacing. (leave the center bits without interfacing or it might stick out sidewards instead of downwards) and just sew it on the back of the of the bow where the knot is.
not a pro but this is how i'd approach it hope this helps.

I dunno if you can sew but assuming it's the color combo that's the issue this would be very easy to diy by buying one with black sleeves/neckline and just replacing the torso part with yellow, using the pieces from the original shirt as your pattern.

Varies wildly, usually by venue and size. What you'll always get are people there to buy overpriced plastic they don't need and see guests who don't wanna be there. A far higher concentration of weird / interesting characters than you'll get on the street
>How often do you get approached by strangers?
Again, varies wildly. Of course the better your costume the more they'll want to no matter what

They take a picture, might say something they like about the costume you have and the series it's from, they ask to add on Instagram then move on
