I have cosplayed as Loid Forger from Spy Senpai and Adachi from P4/Arena.
A lot of guys just aren't confident enough to do it or lack the body type to pull off a certain character. A lot of the guys at these conventions seem to be fat or twigs.

When I was younger I would go all out with makeup, wigs, hair removal, etc.
Nowadays I aim more for comfy, less intensive outfits. Or dumb, memey type shit. Like a generic wizard, but with an absurdly large hat.
When I was younger I did do a lot of cross crossdressing that required the work tho. I couldn't stand wearing a skirt and having hairy legs. Today I'd just find something with pants. Just tends to be a lot less intricate or noteworthy.

Attractive white guys were not undersocialized freaks in high school. They don't need validation from the medium. Also, anime/weebdom is a low status thing to be into.

1) Cosplay is seen as a mostly feminine hobby. Guys might cosplay for a convention or other specific event but most of those dudes aren't going to put together a cosplay to just wear at home and take a few pics.

2) Money. A large chunk of women and especially the more attractive ones can monetize their hobby in some way even its not enough to quit their job it can at least offset costs.

3) Attention. Women want it and there is a seemingly endless swarm of guys willing to give it. Men tend to be less motivated to be attention seekers and also there is simply not quite as much demand.

Back in the day you had Akatsuki members or Deadpools as the "generic" cosplays, but I guess the difference is that people didn't think it was awesome, and in the case of Deadpools people were actually very annoyed by them. Not really sure what the post-covid equivalent of those is. Astolfo joke cosplays were a thing for a while, but I haven't been seeing very many Astolfos at the cons I've been to recently.
