Tomato on white has no business being as delicious as it is for how dead simple it is.

If I need a sandwich it's cheddar and Branston Pickle.
If I need a different sandwich its fancy baguette with fancy ham with lots of fancy butter.

It's all about the bread. And butter. Everything else is optional. If you don't believe me, try one of the attached, fresh, when in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. It's just bread, butter, salt. You wouldn't call it a 'sandwich' but my point is still made.

a ham and cheese on white bread but the bread is so smushed it's almost translucent and some mayo is almost seeping through and the cheese is cut too thick for the sandwich.

BLT + mayo on lightly toasted sourdough is pretty close to the platonic ideal desu. I like to add pickled veggies of some sort like pepper relish.

I think the platonic ideal sandwich would be more like a club than a BLT. Or something like that grinder pic that's always reposted.

Tomatoes seasoned with salt and black pepper, mayo, and a but of mustard on lightly toasted bread. Best taste/effort/nutrition ratio you can get for a sandwich

This, good bread, good egg, good butter, add mustard and cheese, maybe meat, always is good.
Breakfast sandwiches win.

The ham and cheese my mom used to pack me for lunch, with the crunch of lays chips inside.
But honestly these days, a super crunchy BLT with mayo, with fresh LT and crunchy B on toasted white bread.

For me it's bread, extra heavy mayonnaise, and almost anything else. I would only use butter if I'm not adding anything else.

Filet americain is basically steak tartare with some spices, then minced to orange sludge. Great spread for sandwiches.

Recently tried something I thought sounded stupid, it was shaved ribeye, smoked provolone, which is normal, but apparently they chopped up pepperoni really finely and mixed it in with the main meat. i've got to try it again
