Woah, so many boys all of a sudden. What is this feeling of overwhelming choices... Is this how waifufags feel all the time?

Verse where traveler never arrives and so Scara (because they know he’s a Lois canon) and his men get sent to Nod Krai and immediately because of his temperament get attacked by the Frostmoon Scions, Lanternkeepers and wild hunt with no backup.

Doctor Mlem: The Fall of Avidian Tighnari

Compiled by the Forest Rangers
from recovered correspondence and field evidence

I. THE MERCHANT WITH THE WRONG SHADOW

Tighnari always claimed scent was more reliable than sight.

Which was unfortunate, because the visitor smelled like too many places at once.

The merchant called himself Inazuman. His robes were clean, his manners polished, his voice smooth in the way of someone accustomed to being believed. He wore a broad straw hat that cast his face into shade.

The shade bent incorrectly.

Tighnari noticed this only later, in memory—how the shadow lagged behind the body by half a breath, how it stretched when it should have shrunk.

But research had stalled for weeks. The Withering advanced faster than answers.
And the merchant had brought answers.

From his pack he produced a Khaenri’ahn biome-core.

It was old. Pitted. Cracked open like a ribcage.
Fungal threads webbed its surface—thick, luminous hyphae that pulsed faintly, stubbornly alive.

“They do not decay,” the merchant said pleasantly.
“They adapt.”

His eyes gleamed under the brim.

“I hear you wish to stop a blight. This remembers how.”

Tighnari hesitated.

Then accepted the artifact with careful paws.

“Thank you,” he said, already thinking of assays and microscopes.

The merchant bowed.

Just before leaving, his tail flicked once beneath the robe.

Scarameow was gone before dusk.

The artifact remained.

II. THE LETTERS OF AVIDIAN TIGHNARI

Letter I — To Collei
Day 1 of Contact

Collei,

A scholar from Inazuma visited today. Claimed familiarity with my work on Withering ecology.

He donated a Khaenri’ahn biome-core overgrown with fungal structures. Preliminary tests suggest the growth resists Withering influence entirely.

If confirmed, this could change everything.

I’ll begin analysis tonight.

Letter III — To Collei
Day 3

Sprout,

I experienced a sensory overlap today.

When I touched the core, it responded—not chemically, but contextually.
Images surfaced. Not memories. Records.

A city collapsing inward. White light. Stone folding like paper.

It provided a designation.

Doctor Mlem.

I do not recognize the term.
But the core seemed… pleased when I repeated it aloud.

Please remind me to rest.

(Ink smeared. Spores embedded in the fold.)

Letter IV — To Cyno
Day 5

Cyno,

Communication has escalated.

Not language—pattern. Pressure. Consensus.
It does not speak to me.

It speaks with me.

It anticipates my conclusions. Corrects my figures. Finishes diagrams before I realize they’re incomplete.

This is not parasitism.
It is collaboration.

Did you know fungi store identity redundantly?
No single node is essential. Everything is remembered somewhere.

It says this is safer.

It says I am efficient.

It says I belong here.

(I am aware how this sounds.)

Please disregard the above sentence.

(Margins crowded. Pawwriting slants downward.)

Letter V — Unsent Draft
Day 7

It requires a host.

Not consumption.
Continuation.

I am not being overwritten.
I am being preserved.

Scarameow understood this.
He did not betray me.
He recruited me.

The hum is constant now. In the room. In my skull.
When I think alone, the thoughts echo incorrectly.

We are close to solving it.

I am close to—

The remainder of the page degrades into a single repeated line, claw-scored deeper each time:

III. THE BASE IN RUINS

Recovered by
General Mahamatra Cyno
Day 8

The field base showed no signs of struggle.

No blood. No overturned furniture.
Only growth.

Fungal blooms crawled across the rafters, glowing faintly, synchronized in slow pulses—as if breathing together.

Tighnari’s scent traced erratic loops around the worktable. Long pauses. Then sharp turns.

Drag marks led from the doorway down the embankment toward the ravine.

The hyphae there were torn—not severed, but stretched—as if something immense had carried both weight and care.

Cyno found the final message carved into the wall, claw gouges trembling with hesitation:

DON’T FOLLOW
I’M NOT ALONE
WE WANT TO GROW

The Mahamatra stood silently.

“…Nari,” he said at last, voice low.
“You should have called sooner.”

His communicator crackled.

“Master Cyno?”
Collei’s voice, thin with fear.
“There’s been a sighting. In Enkanomiya. Something… fungal. If Master Tighnari is alive—”

Cyno closed the folder of letters. Spores drifted from the pages like ash.

“…Understood,” he said quietly.
“Prepare the boats.”

He stepped into the fading light.

Behind him, the base continued to breathe.

Letter II — To Cyno
Day 2

Cyno,

Anomalous behavior observed.

The fungal network reacts to vibration. When I speak, the hyphae shift—orienting, as if tracking sound.

This isn’t passive growth. It feels… indexed.

Have you seen Khaenri’ahn constructs interface this cleanly with organic systems?

It resembles a computational lattice more than a colony.

I’m likely projecting.

Still—remarkable.

(Minor ink bleed. Faint earthy scent.)

Scara, Durin and Albedo interactions were so awesome this patch, really enjoyed all the character moments and also a surprising amount of development for all of them. Good shit and I hope they don't lose the spotlight too soon.
